Im an engineer in the Royal Navy. A List is created by vessel disposition i.e Balast, overloading,, a roll is a position effected by the environment you are in, ie sea swell ,turning in big seas. Look it up.

I had a question regarding this...I installed the radar on an old great lakes boat 76' twin diesel here in Marina Del Rey. The hull had been ferro-cemented over the old wood - this created a small "twist" in the hull that manifested itself by the boat always listing to the starboard side - so this was a permanent list?Does "Listing" mean "leaning" or "favoring" , like "starboard" means "right"?

P.S. it was an awful boat and I am not sure the cement was the problem.

Yes, list to one side = leaning, there are gobs of reasons, weight distribution, even prop rotation.

Starboard and Port are old English terms for the sides of the Boat, Right/Starboard and Left/Port as you face the Bow respectively. Reason Being Port on the Left following the rules of the road on channels and it being the side tied up to the bank at night.
