@thecorpse70 Absolutey spot on....just been listening to his appearance on Desert Island Discs with Sue Lawley in 1988. She asks him if he's a real Cockney and he says "Nah! I was born in silly suffolk!". He sometimes lets the overstrong "Cockney" accent drop from time to time and sounds quite normal.... great bloke though....maybe just a bit "Involved" with the type of characters he portrays......after all he's an Actor not a real gangster.
@TheMrgaztop Sorry to disappoint you but Bob Hoskins was born in Bury St Edmunds Suffolk! Saw a clip of him at drama school years ago when he had quite a posh accent....not quite sure when he started to imitate cockneys like me but it seems to have made him a lot of money!
yeah agree..onom....and could i say ,,the irish fucked your head up ?...and they made the movie-believible,,,open your mouth 1 centimetre ..your fucked
You can not lose with Helen Mirren; and Bob Hoskins! I love British films...even as a girl reading the movie in Cantonese. These movies inspired me to learn English.
Superb film - born and bred in Stepney/Bethnal Green myself - Bob Hoskins is brilliant in the role - one of the greatest gangster films of all time. Those who comment to the negative do not know the area.........if you do, you'll know you can stand outside a pub even now and watch someone turn up to collect..................
If you guys are interested what happened after the events in this movie, it's this, Harold's driver Razors, became known as Hatchet Harry, he became London's biggest gangster and a card player, the driver with the gun in the end left IRA and started working for the British secret service.
poor direction, pisspoor script, and Bob Hoskins has always been shite... at best a comic foil but completely unconvincing as a hard man... only the Yanks find this fare palatable... to Hendrikdevuile ('A Cockney myself ') neither Michael Caine nor Bob Hoskins are, were, or ever will be 'East End lads who made good'. Micklewhite is South London born and bred, Hoskins is Suffolk... Bury St. Edmunds if you please..!
@caballistical you are entitled to your views, but what have your comments got to do with peoples idea of entertainment? You sound like an entertainment FASCIST,intent on putting your taste on others GROW UP.
I've been wanting to see this again for many years and now I have. . Bob Hoskins' performance is so good, so believable, that I all but forgot he was just acting, he inhabits the role so totally. The best British crime movie ever made, and well up the all-time list world-wide, in my opinion.
A Cockney myself, I feel a great empathy with Michael Caine and Bob Hoskins, the East End lads who made good, and this is probably the latter's greatest performance. Pierce Brosnan, a genuine Irishman, made a very strong and sinister impression without saying a word. Later In The 4th Protocol he was even nastier. Didn't know stock car racing was allowed in Britain, and couldn't tell if the crash involving two burning cars was a deliberate distraction or just an unlikely coincidence.Ta mate!
amazing film oh and by the way bob hoskins was indeed bore in bury st edmonds suffolk

fantastic film, and very brave of the film-makers to include this subject.
I watched the entire movie on youtube here fullscreen, and the results were like watching a videotape back in the 80s.
One of the greatest-ever British films, great upload!
