NARRATOR's VOICE: And so began a love affair with Mary and her life to Americans, Canadians and around the world to propel the actors into iconic status and make them rich off the residuals of reruns. Even Oprah herself admired a television character. Who will be next to be the next television icon of this century. DON'T SAY SNOOKI (horror music) lol
i just loved the mary tyler mmore show! when iwas a little girl in the 70's and i love it so much now and i love bob newhart which used to come on right after it i think! mary;s clothes were so stylish and he r apartment would be so sought after now! i bet a lot of girls move d out of the house after seeing her show! think about it it was better than That Girl! and marlo thomas was still as interesting.
Wow, watching this first season episode really shows you how much the show has changed over time...
Season 1 was just awful and mostly forgettable and Mary was trying WAY TOO HARD to look young! She seemed fake with that wig and fake eyelashes and drag queen makeup...
I was wondering why Rhoda was spun off so soon to her own show. I understand that her character was such a standout and portrayed so brilliantly by Valerie Harper (with mutliple Emmys) that she was getting offers from other networks to star in her own series once her MTM contract was up (in the fifth season). The producers wanted to keep her in the "MTM family" so they devised the spinoff "Rhoda". Her own show, but still as her MTM character.
We never see Bill (Angus Duncan) again...but we'll see a lot more of Mr. Grant's hard-drinking exterior...and the start of a warm relationship between him and Mary [yes, he does find more for her to do, as she'll eventually become the producer of WJM's evening news]- and a strong friendship with Rhoda {originally, Jim Brooks and Allan Burns wanted Mary and Rhoda to have a somewhat "friendly rivalry" before they became "good friends", but the way things turned out in this episode...CLOSE FRIENDS!

I think Betty White saved this show after Rhoda was gone but the last year nobody was saving. It was on a thread. They had run out of steam.
