i have just bought a canon xl1 and am learning everything about it, could you please tell me, how do you do all this 24 fp etc stuff, is this post production? or is actually on the camera?? puzzled and confused jason uk
I bet the footage is much better on his PC. Dont forget the quality-loss after uploading it to YouTube or in general the Internet ;-). The stupid Compressions on the internet are very, very bad for video. Even HD quality will look grainy after uploading it.
Do you have any concept of sound sync? Mouths will not move at the same speed as your soundtrack if you do this you imbecile. The bottom line is film is 24 frames a second and video is 30. If you want your video to look like film... go shoot film. End of story.
ahh sorry i mis-spoke... i meant if he was using an audio track, like music. it would work... but yeah if u tried to get actor dialogue it would sound like fuckin chipmonkville!
May i correct you, just so there wont be any missunderstandings... Film is, as you say 24 fps, but regular interlaced pal video is 25 fps, but every frame is built up by two "half frames", which actually means that it would be 50fps. Usually called 50i. This is what gives video the "video" look. The Xl-1s however, has the ability to record in "frame" mode, wich is 25 full frames per second. This is usualy called "25p". This strongly gives a "film" effect.
OK. Go shoot some footage in frame mode on the XL1-S in broad daylight (without manipulating the speed) and post it. Would love to compare it with film.
i agree check out my videos and high quality, 1 of them was shot with xl1 and the others with the xl1s, watch them in high quality for a better result,
how many times have people seen those overbudgeted movies that just suck<
some people say the canon XL1s doesnt deliver good quality images! ok they arent HD but a good art director can gain fantastic images, and you have done this!!!
i was connecting my xl1s to my computer using the dv terminal...my new computer dosent have the same kind of connection...it has ieee/firewire port...what cable do i get,im stupid and confused...please help
how did you get the widescreen effect on the camera it self on did you add a black matte in post to make it letterbox, did you use a special lense? what kind of editing software did you use?
Hey I really like what you were able to do with the XL1. I have the same one and still learning how to use it. I also have final cut pro now that is taking me sometime to understand.
May I please ask what color correction you gave it in the beginning with the car as well as the other effects you put in? I really admire it and would appreciate a response. Thanks
this short film inspired me in to getting the camera i have now, the XL1s is a fantastic camera, it may not be in HD but i have managed to achieve in capturing images more clear and much more cinema like than some HD handi cams, it handles light pretty much like the human eye, thanks for posting
holy shite, what lense are you using? ive never seen widescreen on the xl1 look so cinematic, and not having those stupid vertical black lines on each side.
Hi. I have seen a xl1s But I have been told by mac retailers that as it is not Fully digital in final cut pro the results are very limited. have you found this to be true. many Thanks
Wow, really, really beautiful footage. You are a good person to ask...you don't have any blur for the stuff that's in slow motion. I'm having trouble getting that. What was your fps for those shots?...and, other question, with the lens flare, was that done in post?
I've never heard of a preferred stock. I usually used Sony Premium tapes. It's important that once you do pick a stock, that you stick with it because tapes tend to have different types of lubrication and it's not good to mix them on a camera.
looks really good... i liked that blooper. but anyway does the canon xl1 have the 24p mode... in other words is it like the xl2? cuz I;m about to buy one and I found a really good deal on a xl1. But I love your film. Have you finished the whole movie?
Amazing footage, i am buying the XL1s(pal) prob tomorrow and i am glad i saw this right before purchasing! u must tell me what lens u used and ur camera settings.
What the difference between the xl 1s and the 7D?
dklustick 7 months ago
@dklustick The difference is you should get the 7D. XL1s is so old now it's not even worth comparing :)
bitnaut 7 months ago
i shoot with the same camera .. only problem is you put the wrong export with 240
export the film to 640 by 480 as an mp4 itr will be much cleaner for youtube

Did you use any filters or add any in post production? it has a film look to it, its not just the standard cine mode is it?
tellul8r 3 years ago
The main thing he did that gives it a non-video look was manipulate the speed of the shots. You can't really do that if you want to use sound though.
bjnignog 2 years ago
yes u can... u just dont speed up the audio track...
