  • What the difference between the xl 1s and the 7D?

  • @dklustick The difference is you should get the 7D. XL1s is so old now it's not even worth comparing :)

  • i shoot with the same camera .. only problem is you put the wrong export with 240

export the film to 640 by 480 as an mp4 itr will be much cleaner for youtube

  • what settings should you have the canon xl1s set to get the best looking cinema footage? got any tips?

  • @studio9011 Sorry I got rid of this camera about 4 years ago...can't remember a thing about it now.

  • fantastic stuff mate

  • Whats better this or the GL2?

  • @gatler05 This has better lenses and they're interchangeable.

  • @bitnaut I wonder still why I asked such a stupid question before haha. Great camera man, I got my hangs on a XLH1 it was fun to work with.

  • what's the song? lol

  • Wonderful footage. I'm convinced I should buy this now.

  • Very nice

  • It's amazing how good of quality you can still get out of a camcorder made in 2001!

  • How exactly were you able to achieve such vivid images with your canon? What kind of lens did you use, lighting, etc.?

  • can anybody help me??? I have canon xl1 but i dont know how to make movies like that video..... please can someone tell me... thank you!

  • i have just bought a canon xl1 and am learning everything about it, could you please tell me, how do you do all this 24 fp etc stuff, is this post production? or is actually on the camera?? puzzled and confused jason uk

  • i love and i hate camera test videos

  • So did you run the footage through a filter or did you just have great light to get that look?

  • I record this music with a Midomi. (this is a music finder)

    The music name is:

    Three Flights Up (instrumental)

  • Thanks!

  • what was the music you used?

  • What is this song?

  • to me this video looks very grainy...i would have expected better from a $3,000 camera.

  • I bet the footage is much better on his PC. Dont forget the quality-loss after uploading it to YouTube or in general the Internet ;-). The stupid Compressions on the internet are very, very bad for video. Even HD quality will look grainy after uploading it.

  • I'm gonna deliver back my panasonic sd 9 and get a canon xl1s instead !!

  • wow xl1 films beter on this video...

  • Where can i order these corders from? im from The UK (Aberdeen, Scotland).

  • eBay!

  • it's film likely at the picture !

  • I think this camera is the most likely picture as a f. ex. super 16. The closest picture to super 16

  • Did you use any filters or add any in post production? it has a film look to it, its not just the standard cine mode is it?

  • The main thing he did that gives it a non-video look was manipulate the speed of the shots. You can't really do that if you want to use sound though.

  • yes u can... u just dont speed up the audio track...

  • Do you have any concept of sound sync? Mouths will not move at the same speed as your soundtrack if you do this you imbecile. The bottom line is film is 24 frames a second and video is 30. If you want your video to look like film... go shoot film. End of story.

  • ahh sorry i mis-spoke... i meant if he was using an audio track, like music. it would work... but yeah if u tried to get actor dialogue it would sound like fuckin chipmonkville!

    lol

  • Yeah, because like, everyone can afford to shoot on film.

  • May i correct you, just so there wont be any missunderstandings... Film is, as you say 24 fps, but regular interlaced pal video is 25 fps, but every frame is built up by two "half frames", which actually means that it would be 50fps. Usually called 50i. This is what gives video the "video" look. The Xl-1s however, has the ability to record in "frame" mode, wich is 25 full frames per second. This is usualy called "25p". This strongly gives a "film" effect.

  • OK. Go shoot some footage in frame mode on the XL1-S in broad daylight (without manipulating the speed) and post it. Would love to compare it with film.

  • you lose quality, film in normal mode and then make your changes during editing get maximum quality first then make your changes

  • ROFL - u mean that u can't slow down (or speed up) sounds ???

  • Yeah that was reaaly nice.

I would love to see a YT HD version of that.

    Great choice of music.

  • the xl 1 delivers some pretty damn nice quality, even to this day. ppl who say the quality is bad are unable to shoot :P

  • i agree check out my videos and high quality, 1 of them was shot with xl1 and the others with the xl1s, watch them in high quality for a better result,

how many times have people seen those overbudgeted movies that just suck<

  • just got the xl1s. I love it. probely the best choice with my money

  • hey whats up, just got my xl1s yesterday and I am way too stoked.

What type of editing program did you use?

what is the best quality program for capturing from camera to computer?

Do you use the editing software to produce the slow motion and fast motion?

I could ask a million questions, sorry, I am pretty stoked right now.

  • some people say the canon XL1s doesnt deliver good quality images! ok they arent HD but a good art director can gain fantastic images, and you have done this!!!

  • great vid. good job....thx for posting..

  • hello whats the song called, it fits perfect

  • i was connecting my xl1s to my computer using the dv terminal...my new computer dosent have the same kind of connection...it has ieee/firewire port...what cable do i get,im stupid and confused...please help

  • how did you get the widescreen effect on the camera it self on did you add a black matte in post to make it letterbox, did you use a special lense? what kind of editing software did you use?

  • hi like the video

im a owner of a canan xl1s also and i cant seem to get the uaility picture into the computer

did u uses anolog or dv to usb

  • Hey I really like what you were able to do with the XL1. I have the same one and still learning how to use it. I also have final cut pro now that is taking me sometime to understand.

  • great vid and music :)

  • May I please ask what color correction you gave it in the beginning with the car as well as the other effects you put in? I really admire it and would appreciate a response. Thanks

  • the footage through the skyscrapers is fantastic for an amatuer film maker. what did you edit your film with?

  • Final Cut Pro

  • this short film inspired me in to getting the camera i have now, the XL1s is a fantastic camera, it may not be in HD but i have managed to achieve in capturing images more clear and much more cinema like than some HD handi cams, it handles light pretty much like the human eye, thanks for posting

  • thanks for your post, thinking to get one too. peace.

  • it is no 16:9 ...it's 2,35:1 letterbox.

  • hi, how did you film in 16:9 ? The XL1 hasn´t a real 16:9 ... did you edit it with a programm or did you film in the "16:9 mode" Thanks

  • I just cropped in Final Cut Pro.

  • @crassescheckerbunny rubish. the xl1S does have real 16:9. i own one myself and use it all the time. (and no, its not just cropping)

  • how much is this cam?

  • They don't make it anymore so I don't know what the used price is for it.

  • about 7 to 8.000 us dollars from new i guess

  • hey when you shot this did you use a widscreen lens?

  • I used a wideangle lens for some of it.

  • nice movie ^^

can anyone tell me anything about the titel of these song?

  • The song is by Yellowcard and it's called Three Flights Up

  • nice video , final cut pro is amazing have u got version 2 too?

  • Final Cut Studio 2...yes

  • amazing dude whats the music called

  • The song is by Yellowcard and it's called Three Flights Up

  • hiya...just wanna say...its really great loking footage.:) Great job. And who says DV can't look good.

  • people with trust funds.

  • viva la camcorder

  • you mentioned that you used nikon still lenses with a mini35 adapter. what exact lense are u using, if you don't mind me asking?

i've yet to see any footage from a XL1s that's as great as yours!

  • I think for alot of these shots I was using the 17-35mm/2.8 Nikon lens. I like wideangles.

  • good shooting, kuk music !

  • how do you do that? I'm thinking of getting an xl1, but i don't know anything about lens adapters or what lenses this guy uses or anything.

  • this looks like 24p. how'd you do that with an xl1?

  • I like this. Good job

  • I use no lens its only colour correction.

  • holy shite, what lense are you using? ive never seen widescreen on the xl1 look so cinematic, and not having those stupid vertical black lines on each side.

  • I used a P+S Technik Mini35 lens adapter with my Nikon lenses.

  • did u crop this?

  • Yes, in Final Cut Pro...

  • Hi. I have seen a xl1s But I have been told by mac retailers that as it is not Fully digital in final cut pro the results are very limited. have you found this to be true. many Thanks

  • awesome video!

i love the quality of the video. Im studying film in my high school and Im thinking of buying the XL1. I actually wanted the XL2 but low budget =[

I see by the quality of this video that the camera is amazing...

  • Wow, really, really beautiful footage. You are a good person to ask...you don't have any blur for the stuff that's in slow motion. I'm having trouble getting that. What was your fps for those shots?...and, other question, with the lens flare, was that done in post?

  • is that guy in the beggining drunk?

  • Yes! Even though the XL2's better, my doubts of the XL1s having bad quality are now gone!

  • did you aply any filters or effects in post?

  • Yes, I used Twixtor for the slow motion and speed up effects.

  • does anyone know the preffered stock of the XL1?

  • I've never heard of a preferred stock. I usually used Sony Premium tapes. It's important that once you do pick a stock, that you stick with it because tapes tend to have different types of lubrication and it's not good to mix them on a camera.

  • geez dude, the XL1 looks so damn cool. I love widescreen! haha I recgnized downtown minneapolis.

  • That is amazing, I love the angle at the beginning, music ties in with it perfect. 5 Stars, great quality video.

  • Um...they don't sell the xl1 anymore and it was nowhere near $9000 when they did...you're confusing it with the newer cameras from Canon.

  • No kidding, brand new HD Canons are not even that much. The XL2 is only 4K brand new.

  • Wow I'm shocked - a $9,000 prosumer camera without 24p?

  • sorry dude, xl1 does not have 24p

  • looks really good... i liked that blooper. but anyway does the canon xl1 have the 24p mode... in other words is it like the xl2? cuz I;m about to buy one and I found a really good deal on a xl1. But I love your film. Have you finished the whole movie?

  • Wonderful balance of light and color within the compositions. Smooth transitions from each mood. Great montage.

  • Hi, amazing job pal, hey how did you obtained such handsome pictures, lens, color correction pls tell me.

  • Some of the footage was done with the standard lens but some of it was also done with the Mini35 adapter and using my Nikon still camera lenses.

  • Amazing footage, i am buying the XL1s(pal) prob tomorrow and i am glad i saw this right before purchasing! u must tell me what lens u used and ur camera settings.

  • I used firewire to transfer the DV footage to my computer.
