Hey Stephen if you see this, my name is Anthony Hughes, my Grandparents are Phil and Wanda Hughes. They try to make every festival near Indiana as possible. I just wanted to say that i love your playing, and even though i have the same dulcimer, it just doesn't sing like that! haha. But! I love your playing!
Incredible!! I wonder if you could help me. I want to buy a mountain dulcimer, but I really have no clue what kind I should get. I really like the sound of your dulcimer though. Does the pattern of the holes matter to the sound? Some have hearts and others have more traditional patterns. Or is it the way you tune it that makes the difference? I really am clueless :p I've been looking for one on ebay, but they all have different name. Appalachian, jumbo cherry, applecreek acd 200k?? Help!! :))
@mariannethor Stephen is playing a McSpadden Schnaufer model. Expensive, but MCSpad makes standard models that are very ncie too. Virtually any AMERICAN builder will provide you decent instrument. AVOID factory-made imports (like the Applecreek), which have little authenticity and which will not hold their value. Also check out the discussion forum at everythingdulcimer(dot)com.
hi i love your playing! fantastic! i'm in Australia.. i'm teaching myself to play dulcimer. mine sounds loud like yours. even better when i sit it on a wooden table to play, it resonates with the wood. what Tuning do you have on yr dulcimer? that's the hard part for me.. i just can't quite work out my tunings... i had it, then one day someone changed it now i can't figure out what tuning will give me the most 'options' for playing songs... seems like there's notes missing at the moment! cheers
@miniraptorX It's probably the easiest string instrument to learn. People in their 70s with no musical experience can be playing pleasant tunes within a few days. Playing as well as Stephen does, however, requires both talent and a lifetime of dedication.
Man, I love the sound of that thing! I hope mine sounds at least half as good when I get it back together. I play mandolin also and I notice you use a lot of mando techniques in your playing. Nice job on Wildwood Flower. ;))
Love your playing, Stephen! I'm from Mtn View, have a 3-string I built from a McSpadden kit in 1967. Only hangs on the wall these days, but you've made me want to get it down and give it another go. Thanks!
Beautiful. I'm thinking about starting to play. One of my grandmother's friends made one and I want to play it more often. Stephen, are they a lot of fun to play on?
I have played acoustinc and electric guitar for 17 years, and after seeing Cindy Lauper play it, and now you. I am whipping out my credit card to buy one as we speak.
Yeah, what a shame those old fashioned country folk never do nothing but sit on the porch, make moonshine and inbreed. LOL. What great talent, loved every minute. This is my Ozark heritage and I am very proud.
That was defiantly worth listening to a few more times. I really like that song, and never heard it played that way before. Its great! BTW your myspace won't open for me. Gloria
McSpadden does'nt give you their instruments? I would. "Hello Mr.Seifert, today we have a fine selection from custom koa to our six string baritone." HAHAHAH!
Thanks, I look forward to meeting you in Townsend in Nov.. I would also like to take your class.
An aged, often played McSpadden has a rich, balanced tone with lots of sustain. The flatheads are easy to tune, the fretting is accurate, they're easy to repair and modify, and they're guaranteed for life to the original owner. There's also the many important , subtle things that are part of the design due to the constant back-and-forth between great players and the builders. Which dulcimers have you found to be better and why? By the way, there's a number of builders I'm crazy about.
I like the mcspaddens, but for a player of your stature, I think that mcspaddens are not suitable. The bass response is weak on most, maybe because of the gauge of string. I use a 14-16-30 set for my strings.
McSpaddens are very nice for their beauty, the fullness, and price. I prefer Clemmer, Bonnie Carols,Rockwells. And who does'nt love a Gallier?
I respectfully disagree. I think McSpaddens are very suitable to a player with my needs. They don't give them to me either. I have to save up and make the purchase. When I'm in the Studio, fronting an orchestra, or playing solo in concert, I'm always glad I've got one in my lap. The bass response on mine can easily overwhelm the microphone.
I love my Clemmer Ban-Jammer. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my Rockwell instruments. Have never owned a Bonnie Carol. Gallier makes awesome instruments!
It's not that I so not like McSpaddens, I have played some that are STELLAR. I guess I have'nt got a hold of the right ones. I have played all walnut ones that just sang into your ear. Does'nt it void the warranty to go past a 10-12-22 or something like that for string gauges. I find that the strings are 'floppy'. I very highly respect your opinion. I also do not doubt that you are telling the truth. I know I just need to find the right one.
Have you ever played a Mcspadden? There's something crisp, clean, and easy about them. Something proffesional. Mcspadden's is a wonderful brand, and if you want a well rounded instrument, Mcspadden or Blue Lion is where I turn.
OMG that was great I pick it out on just the melody strings. You are my hero now you didn't even leave the 1st 3 frets till the break. Do you take students?
Hey Steve, glad to see another video up from you. I am getting a chromatic from Gary and he said he should have it done by June so hopefully I'll have it for the week. Great as always, and I'll catch up with you later.
Hey Stephen! I saw you preform with the Brevard Symphony. And you have inspired me to learn how to play the Mountain Dulcimer! Thank you :)
