  • Robert Goulet.

  • bur who is the guy on the cycle?

  • @markonstark He is Robert Goulet. He was a very popular singer, sort of pre-rock, and a regular on I've Got A Secret.

  • I wonder how they would react if they saw a girl riding a current Motorcycle.

  • The big "hairbun" is a little over the top.

  • Does anybody know if the guy in this video is on a Yamaha YG1?

  • All these years I thought it was black girls singing this.

  • i saw this episode last week it was cool i like when they did the skit to it

  • Liked the song when I was young, however I always wondered, why she would meet the leader of the pack at the CANDY STORE!!!???

  • My dad sings this all the time. Facepalm.

  • great voices and so sexy legs!

  • i have got a first copy of this record came out in 1963 still plays after all this time as any one out their still got one let us know on this page my name is joe

  • I actually like this song...

    (I'm only 18....)

  • Imagine being a two years old child ,and this song being a hit in the same month your b

  • @John1948ElevenB it's common knowledge john.. the other reason may have been that Betty had a baby daughter at home

  • The guy on the bike looks like Jay Leno.

  • @wackydac It is, in fact, Robert Goulet.

  • @Alikah1 Hey thanks for that bit I wondered for a long time.

  • Oi! Leader of the Laundromat!

  • Wow.... That would suck..

  • god damn mary weiss' voice is beautiful

  • genial

  • Yes we see.

    Always makes me giggle.

  • I like the amused/bemused look on Mary's face when Goulet pulls up in front of her.

  • great song!! :)........snooki would be jealous

  • hot stuff here...

  • @YungTigerWu My mom is from that generation. I look at her highschool year book from 1963 and every guy and girl have the same hair. Buzz cut for the guys, beehive for the girls. They almost all lool alike! LOL!

  • Always loved this song since I was a kid. Now I know this is one of the bands that inspired Amy Winehouse.

  • one of my fave songs :D

  • In my opinion, The Shangri-Las were THE girl group of the 1960's and man, that little Mary Weiss was a doll !

  • That looks like the principle of the school on that bike, she should go find someone new; he's too old for her !

    Go !

  • 1:34 :D

  • 1:04 :D

  • For years I thought this was an original Twisted Sister song

  • I'm 14, and I love this song[: i grew up with stuff like this, and I dislike how music formed into songs with no meaning. ._.

  • WAREING...? That is NY Speak for... Wearing...!

  • Damn Mary Weiss is such a beaut!

  • Elizabeth "Betty" Weiss was born in 1946. Mary Weiss was born in 1948. The identical twins were Marguerite "Marge" Ganser (1948-1996) and Mary Ann Ganser (1948-1970). Mary Weiss was the main lead singer; Betty, however, took lead on "Maybe" and "Shout". In 1964, they had their first success with the summer hit, "Remember (Walking in the Sand)". Billy Joel, a then-unknown working as a session musician, played on the demo of "Remember (Walkin' In The Sand)". (Information from Wikipedia)

  • Great song! Great vocals! These girls were only 18 when "Leader Of The

Pack" was a huge hit in 1964.Great name for the group. They were from

    New York City.

  • this song came on the radio on my way back from vegas..... so i thought i would check it out it's been a long while

  • Could Leader of the pack be thought of as a early metal song? the motorcycle engine revving

  • hey ! try being two years old when this song went to #1

  • This video rocked cuz im gonna play in my scool play i

  • This video rocked!!!! And especially, CUZ, Im o

  • Have you ever heard someone on the phone and get a "mental picture" of what they look like and then when you meet them they are....COMPLETELY DIFFERENT? Well, this video blew me away because I thought they would look so much different. Thanks for sharing

  • Heh heh, the last song one would want to tack a comedy skit in.

The original bad girls. One couldn't think of a better group to sing such a haunting and memorable tune. Even in their conservative wear the girl's demeanor's showed they were trouble. They had attitude long before women were allowed to have it.

  • Excellent piece of work! Thank you very much for Sharing!

What a way of meeting people and get to see their talent. At first was reluctant being on youtube, but getting to do this has brought me into the houses of some very special people. You are one of them. Life; isn't it wonderful!

Keep up the good work. Hope You Are Having A Splendid Day!

    A New Friend

    Erick

  • Heeeey that's not Betty! It's the other Weiss, Mary!

  • They just don't make music like this anymore.

  • Shows you that lip syncing is nothing new.

  • ok....if they new about Jimmy...why didn't they know he was dead......"is he picking you up after school"

  • @backdoorsuccess It's just a song. LOL

  • @backdoorsuccess They didn't know about Jimmy's motorcycle accident. The lead singer is telling them about it for the first time.

  • @backdoorsuccess Dear backyardsuccess, It is long ago, there is not Facebook or Internet. . There isn't even any text-messaging. . The only way to find out anything is by word of mouth litterally. . There were only 180 telephones per hundred-thousand population in that state in those days. . Some farmers were even still using pidgeons for messages. . When the news was finally out about the death, there was a big funeral and Wake party in the School Gym. . Cheers. from, del-boy.
  • Went to #1…! NOT FAIR I HAVE TO BE BORN IN 1997!!!! NOT FAIR!!!!

  • This is another shangi las song im singing at my camps rock n roll recital

  • lol @ 0:37 - lol did u hear the girls in the audience shrieking when the dude with the motorbike came onstage lol?! most teens were so timid back then...

  • GREAT video, first time i've seen it.

  • Billboard's 160th #1 hit of the rock era. God bless!

  • One thing that's always confused me is that Mary does lead, yet in this particular song, she's referred to as "Betty." Now, that might have been how the song was written, but considering there was a Betty in the group, perhaps they should have changed the lyrics to "Mary" instead of "Betty."

  • Always loved this song.

  • OK Am i the only person in the world that realises that Green Day American Idiot ripped off Leader of the pack by the ShangriLa's, go check out chorus to Green day American Idiot on youtube, you can almost hear the motorbike engine rev at the break after the chorus lol, green day i do love them but they rip everyone off lol

  • Good to see ,outlaw mc members dont hang around candy stores any more.

  • Snookie

  • This Girl is the cutiest...What a sweetie..xxx

  • i love this song it's so great!!!! <3

  • How can we all forget the leader of the pack!! oooowww yeeeaaa

  • @heavy21metal

  • WAS A GREAT SONG, STILL IS.

  • @LOTSAAS Have you checked out Shout by the Shangri-las? They can really rock!

  • Didn't Twisted Sister cover this song?

  • @terriblita308 yeah they did!

  • Apparently this is October 1964 the show I've Got a Secret. Robert Goulet, Bess Meyerson and Betsy Palmer recited the words to the song dramatically and the panel of guests had to guess what they were doing. Then the Shangri-las came out to sing.

  • @mocrg Thanks! I was able to find confirmation and have corrected the title. I really appreciate the help.

  • @John1948ElevenB If you google Redbird records there's actually a write up on this appearance. I was reading and thinking...hey! I've seen this on the intertubes. Thanks for posting it.

  • Shame Betty is not on this performance, it spoils it when a girl is missing! xxx

  • LOL! the leader of the scooter pack! *oooh! they are scary!*

  • Omg, I was trying to figure out the opening of HYper Crush's "Candy Store", and now I found it! :D

  • Mary is wearing the Bumpit!

  • Regarding whether Mary has a wig/hairpiece on, they were fashionable in those days, however I think this is her own hair. Its a bit over the top (pun intended) but basically its a 'beehive' where the hair was teased and sprayed and given 'height'. Interesting how hairstyles change over the years. More importantly, what a classic song.

  • wow.. wayback when ya got in trouble at school if your knees showed ... look out look out look out !!! loveit, it makes me smile, even though it is so sad

  • @Izzielotzafunnies In our school they could be just above the kneecap but few girls wore them that short.

  • @John1948ElevenB lol!!! ..boy things changed quickly after that.. at my junior high school the break bouncer~teacher would spend the break looking at the girls' skirts and send them to the office if they were too short. Well, some of the girls... By that time, rule was one inch above the kneecap. . He let me get away with it. I was so glad, because It would have looked too funny, really. My legs were too long, if that makes sense. Wow the sixties.. i was over 50 years old, maybe that's why !!!

  • Cute song but I prefer "Remember(Walking In The Sand)

  • What a cutie

  • its a recording, if you listen to the real song it is exactly the same. plus its easy to tell. but who cares, THIS SONG ROCKS

  • kind of obvious they were playing the track. but its a kick ass song. TOTALLY LOVE IT!! yall.

  • shame this no LOVE IT button :o)

i guess you know that billy joel played the piano on this track...?

  • Check out these hotties! lol

  • That looked like Robert Goulet ?

  • Is that supposed to be Steve Allen on the bike?

  • The blonde's hair thing is amazing. What is it?

  • it looked like she was mouthing it over a recording to me what do you think?

  • @jaychristy01 I don't think about such things. It gets a big "who cares" from me.

  • @jaychristy01 Yes, they were lipsynching. This isn't a new thing. that's what groups regularly do on shows - then and now

  • @jaychristy01 No wig! Those girls Mary and Betty had a lot of hair. She just gathered up the outer layer and rolled it up into a bun. One of the colored album labels entitled, The Shangri Las, the complete collection, shows both Mary and Betty with heads loaded with hair!

  • they had thicker hair back then... there was less poison in the air and food...

  • ha! now i know how mary could do THAT with her hair - it's a hair piece :D

  • OMG I want the bike!

  • Mary Wiess was very lovely over there on The Steve Allen Show and I noticing that she ( Mary ) has a wig on top of her head.

  • @1961FloridaBoy Are you sure it's a wig? Some of the girls could come up with some pretty strange hairdos. This one qualifies.

  • @John1948ElevenB I don`t know but you might be right when you said that Mary Weiss might have some pretty strange hairdos on top of her head that is qualifies and not a wig.

    She was pretty over there.

  • Except for the high heels that's just how a lot of the girls dressed for school back in the day. I miss ladies.

  • This has to be on Steve Allen Show.

  • @1961FloridaBoy Yes, it is. I should add that to the title. Thanks for reminding me FB.

  • the singer is soo gorgeous.

  • It was really Robert Goulet who was riding the motorcycle while he was making his faces and goofing to her. Great Video Clip and I love it. Great song and it is one of my favorite too. The Shangri - Las were the best and one of the great girls group. Thank you for putting this up.

  • how come they call her "betty" instead of mary?

  • @okgo43 Because it's Betty, not Mary

  • @lourdesgirl101 no, it's mary.

  • @okgo43 they didn't write it so I'm not sure why it's that way. Betty didn't really perform with them much at this point so they probably figured they could get away with it but you would think Mary would have asked to change the lyrics to avoid confusion with her sister.

  • i sang this for my talnet show

  • this is one of favorite songs ever

  • so glad you have posted a video my last favourite video of this is not available thankyou my mother used to play this every saturday night full blast

  • I dont whose missing but one is

  • If you read the bio you will see that she often missed concerts and recording sessions. I think they just carried her as she was Mary's sister, sort of a groupie thing.

  • Where's the 4th Girl Mary's Sis

  • Pure schlock, but I love it! Such innocent times those were.

  • "Pure schlock, but I love it! Such innocent times those were. "

Innocent times? it was the 60's there was a little thing called the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights Movement going on...

  • LOL awesome vid!

  • guy sure looks like robert goulet.

  • @ kroyka:

There's a really good reason for that.

  • @kroyka it is.

  • i lvoe the shangri-las im there biggest fan!!!!!!!!!

  • how did the girls keep a straight face.hillarious!

  • i always thought the shirelles ang this song!!!

  • @erm0319 yup they were, others have done it, they were the first.

  • Maby best song ever!!!

  • @mixa1977 I think so.

  • I don't know how she kept from cracking up when that guy was making his faces and goofing. LOL

  • @John1948ElevenB I alway's wondered that to, notice right when he came on, she did smile, wow, don't know how she did it, but she did. that show's something.

  • lovely and divine....me and my sister we both loved this tune..thank you my friend...5*****
