  • I like the style of music with ethnic!!

  • He's just as fun/intense in master classes and yes he is quite tall, incredible player!

  • Boring!

  • WOW! chelist is absolutely great! very smart person. he took really right tempo! he can read Shostakovich s literature. love it )))))))

  • I played with Peter at the International cello festival 2011 adelaide,,,he is so goood

  • 那個法國號應該已經被fire了吧?

  • his cello seems kinda small. is it the 4/4 size? or is he really tall?

  • @Derrymaine148 I don´t know, but the Dutch are very tall on average, so it´s probably that.

  • his cello seems kinda small. is ti the 4/4 size? or is he really tall?

  • Oh, and also. Listen to other things this orchestra has on Youtube before you pass judgement.

  • Brass instruments, especially french horns, have partials. Sometimes the best players in the world make mistakes. Shut the hell up and enjoy the music. This orchestra is great.

  • I personally really like wispelwey's interpretation. I would love to hear it with a better accompaniment though because this orchestra is not helping him at all. I would probably rather just listen to wispelwey play this piece solo.

  • Tremendous with a capital 'T' Awesome focus and skill love it Thankyou Al

  • The approach of the cellist is better perhaps than Rortropovich's: he lets the music breathe. He is also very charming qith his anxiety. But the orchestra is disorganised.

  • It was a french horn from ebay HK maybe.. ahah

  • Look for Ricardo Acosta's sonata for piano and violin. He is deeply influenced by Shostakovich.

  • El solista es genial, y creo que por eso ya merece la pena el vídeo.

  • El violoncellista es genial, y sólo por ello ya merece la pena el vídeo.

  • i don't see how the orchestra is a fail.. the song gets tedious and boring after a while... dynamics could be better, and the soloist is a beast... but the french horn, how do you guys know he's failing so much?

  • @pyreshadow

Well listen to other versions and you'll notice how the french horn is making a lot of mistakes. Anyways you dont need to know the piece to notice the error at 2:45.

  • Please, kill the conductor, the orchestra, the french horn,..............Oh, my god......poor peter.....He really is great!!

  • This is a mess. The orchestra is half-dead. The french horn is making mistake after mistake. The cellist is strange but he is rocking that cello in spite of the total lack of ensemble playing in the orchestra to his playing.

  • please kill the big trumpet!!! ^^

  • He's completely into this, it's remarkable to see the emotion from him. Love it!

  • that french horn is a total fail

  • Phenominal accomplished artist of the 'Top floor.

Dont understand where people are coming from regarding him being a 'wierdo'?The guy's a dedicated master and ,if people are referring to his excentricity, then he has succeeded in his performance,as Shoshtokovich's cello concerto is exactly just that Genius loved it Alainx

  • I feel like his interpretation could have been stronger on this. Shosty is supposed to be super hardcore, at least that's the way i think it should be. This was the time of super russian power, of the soviet union, communist nation feared throughout the world. There are no softies in Russia, so why would the music coming from there be any different? :p That's just how I feel about this. But not too bad overall.

  • I think he is ---> 0

  • Guys a weirdo but he plays a mean cello :D

    Interesting song... I love it.

  • ALUCINANTE

  • so nao e muito legal quando o trompista escroca...rsrsr

  • um dos grandes cellista da atualidade...

  • Excellente interprétation!! Je l'ai aimé beaucoup!!

  • Interesting cellist,he's quite original

  • i agree, he starts off the concerto a little bit calmer than most people start off; instead of hammering away he builds it up

  • @quinto34 Indeed...And i love it that way

  • Seriously, i think one needs to be possessed to play this piece. I watched Hanna Chang play the same piece and she seemed possessed as this guys is.

  • Love the performance, love the enthusiasm. Can someone tell me what the green pads are that appear to be placed on the timpani heads? Are those mufflers?

  • its nice to see such a versatile cellist,

but i agree that the tempo is quite odd

  • my bad... oops... but I actually think it's a little slow, and in spots, for as expressive and flexible it seems to be....

  • I played this at our concert, it's not that easy to play. I've been playing for 10+ years.

  • just great!

  • He plays this really badly

  • seriously, he needs to stop acting and worry more about what comes out of his instrument. plus its way too choppy

  • Not really badly, just weirdly, as if it had been written in the late 1700's instead of the late 20th century

  • Beznadzieja panie Piotrze !!!

  • wow...im quit pleased the way it sounds...very Russian like.

  • This isn't bad. He plays really well. If you are going to shit all over this I'd like to see some videos of you playing it better.

And yo yo ma is a tool.

  • This is a very interesting interpretation, a little odd, but nice difference.

  • what's this? damn, I love Peter when he plays Haydn, but this is appalling. He and his orchestra are completely without charisma (and sometimes not in tempo). I think that the right word for this performance his "useless"

  • oh my fuck! no, no, no!

this interpretation is a pile of dog shit!

  • show us your interpretation and let us decide. Why the negativity?

  • Because it makes sense.

  • It makes sense that an interpretation is a pile of dog shit? It's all subjective my friend. Don't act like it isn't.

  • @cheecheepong Oh i'm sorry! I thought you were responding to someone elses comment who mentioned the style without using expletives.

  • 1:24 - 1:32. amazingly bad sounding and not together pizz followed by a timpani sound which might as well have been made by lighting firecrackers on the drum head. This has to be my favorite part of this performance. :)

  • This man is like Yo Yo Ma... I like to listen. I LIKE to listen. Not to see.

  • Haha! Wispelwey, I absolutely love you, but this is way too pretty. Baroque Shostakovich! This is hilarious.

  • Comment removed

  • well, easier said then done...for those who like to critisize..have you played this concerto?? play it then open your mouths

  • It's not the technique that's being criticized. He's just totally got the style wrong. Yes, we all know this concerto is disgustingly difficult.

  • I think he hasn´t enough power for shostakovich, this is a very romantical enterpretation. the wrong way of playing shostakoviches music

  • wow this orchestra really sucks

  • omg what's with the interpretation??

  • This is awful, not at all how the piece is meant to be played.

  • this is such a pathetic and emotionally lacking performance. Not his style

  • in my opinion it sounds a little too happy. its supposed to be really angry and emotional! :D

  • Wispelwey has great technique and sound. I really enjoy his Bach and Haydn recordings. I do think however that this style is not suited to Shostakovich. This music requires a lot of intensity of sound and needs to poignantly convey the oppression and suffering Shostakovich endured and expressed through his composing. No doubt that it is emotionally and technically exhausting to perform with all of that in mind. Everyone has such a different approach to the same pieces: it's rather interesting!

  • i hate this camera work.

  • true. overall this is pretty bad. he's (the solo cellist) is "feeling" the music for the crowd. I can just tell he doesn't feel the true beauty of the music. Well rhis is a crappy arrangement I couldnt find anything pretty in this piece

  • Why is the horn player so bad??? lol

  • I've never heard such a casual approach. It's as though we are watching a rehersal. This piece was meant to be violent! They seem almost sleepy.

  • i think its a problem of the orchestra, se pifian mucho, jajaja, en especail el cornista :D, con hilary hahn también un resto

  • winds got a wierd intonation, don t u think? i expeted so much more from the hk orchestra, cux ive seen a lot of asians playing absurdly well trgh all youtube

  • the way hes breathing if you watch for a while looks like hes playing a large brass instrument lol....... i.e. tuba

  • he likes to nod.... a lot haha

  • Pieter Wispelwey is an awesone cellist! Thanks for uploading this.

  • I Love Wispelwey

  • Awesome performance, what more could you ask for really

  • loooove wispelwey!

the poncey little staccatos are grating a bit though.

  • Thanks for posting this. Simply great!

  • dont mind this:

    horn solo @2:42, 3:18, 4:22

  • I think Wispelwey always offers up very personnel interpretations of pieces, i think his sound is sometimes more suited to baroque/classical music, his haydn c on youtube is fantastic, but then again i heard him play the kodaly unaccompanied sonata recently and it was breathtaking. I was lucky enough to play to him that day in a masterclass and he offered up some really interesting ideas, hes a phenominal cellist, both musically and technically.

  • lol I'm so jalous.

He plays around my spot in november, can't wait to see him.

  • Great cellist!!!

    Thanks for inspiration!

  • I think it was a miserable interpretation. I found myself often uninterested. It was like someone who was was painting the nightime sky but using organges, and yellows. It just did not fit. The orchestra was really wierd to.

  • Wispelwey is incredible! fantastic!

  • I find his playing to be sooo creative, and his technique is incredible.... unfortunately the orchestra sounds horrible!!! geez. really bad

  • You think I think just a little more help with him and his orchestra they will be tied.

  • I agree, Han na is playing with a much better orchestra

  • beautiful piece, but I'm not too into his style. It's not ugly enough. I think it needs more crunch and... shabang! or something.

  • Have you heard his studio recording? His playing there is slightly more imaginative, but the superior recorded sound really gives his cello greater expressivity.

  • yeah, its like he's just playing the notes, not expressing them

  • Mendelsona kakogo-to razvel)

  • super cellist, extra high level! Bravo!

fresh, maybe sometime little bit strange interpretation, but it's one of really interesting recording, who played this piece on the stage with orchestra will appreciate his fantastic technical level. *****

  • I don't know what you guys are talking about, he plays like a baroque player. Completely opposite from romantic style. NO one plays this better than Rostropovich.

  • he is good, but a saw truls mork play it a few months ago and it blew away anything i have heard before or since

  • that horn player is not the best either, but i am fond of the cellist, even though the piece did go a little to fast i think....

  • wow! he screams with the cello :)

  • he seems to do many more interesting things with it than Han-Na chang

  • I'm not sure shostakovich suits him...

  • To much romantic, but i give 5 stars ;)

  • Agreed. This is not a romantic piece. Requires an air of brutality.

  • This is greatly appreciated, such a majestic performance..
