Such a perfect piece of music. It's hard to sit through the first 4.5 minutes, not because it's a bad song, but because the jam is just too god damn perfect.
you wanna here passion? halloween live. and to say they dont play with passion is BS. i went to alpine this year and he played halloween and for two step, you can hear it in his voice. and there out there having fun and doing what they love to do. and what you are i think is a good song so fuck whoever said that. to sum things up, DMB is a grrrreaaat band, and not every band makes a platinum selling album. so just back off and true fans dont get angry if theres a song they dont like. they listen
Really the only thing that counts is that DMB is one of if not the best acts out there and still was even during the Everyday and Stand Up era. But if you look at the big picture and put Everyday next to anybodies album during that same time frame, well DMB still blows them out of the water. Lousiana Bayou isn't a joke, it's a pretty heavy shit if you think about it, " two young kids laying dead on the side of the road." pretty bad joke. lol
Broadway..if you saw them this summer, then you would realize that your statement "They were hungry and played with passion. It has never been the same since "Everyday", is absurd and holds no validity, even if you have been a fan for "10 years". I have too, so I can also say Everyday, yes was bad, but saying they don't sing with "passion" is a joke. Have you listened to So Damn Lucky screaming from the Gorge?..thats passion.
I agree with Broadway to some extent, they have never been able to commence the entesity and full on speed of 98, which afterward seemed to become more mellow. 2008 was definetely close in comparison to 98 and was way better then the Everyday era as far as I am concerned.
I will say the show they played the night of Roi's passing was as intense and as passionate a show as I've heard. I will give you that, absolutely. "Everyday" and "Stand Up" material has polluted setlists for years since the respective release of those albums. Material like "Louisiana Bayou" and "What You Are" is a joke compared to material like "The Last Stop" and "Dreaming Tree". They sold out with the release of "Everyday", in my opinion. I agree to disagree with you on this point.
And to further clarify, 2008 was the first sign of life from this band in several years in terms of live performance. This band is transformed by the presence of Tim Reynolds. They play on an entirely different level with him, in my opinion. I will stipulate to the three best tour years I've seen as 1998, 2000 and 2008.
Ok, now I see where you're going with it, and I agree with you. I still think "What You Are" is bad ass, but other than that, Tim has definitely brought "old school" life back to the band. i remember hearing Stephan comment on it, saying how now he hears certain "licks" that Timmy used to play, that he has brought back and energized the band
Have I listened to it? Of course. Let me put it to you this way: There was I time I would NEVER leave my seat during a DMB performance, and since the release of "Everyday" there are times I HAVE to leave my seat to keep from throwing something at the stage. Of course, they are not *devoid* of passion, but they do not consistently *play* with passion. I respect your opinion and your credentials at face value, and I ask that please give me the same courtesy. It's an opinion. That's all.
honelsty i dont liek people like you. taht judge a bands talent by there albums. how can you say that everyday is bad. you should respect the dave matthews band for making that album along with the rest of their work. so you should rephrase your words and say "everyday was not my favorite". but calling the album bad is just disrespecting the band. besides a TRUE fan would love all of the work that dave and the crew does, even if it is different from the rest.
This was their pinacle. I saw them on this tour at Worchester (which is now a live download) and they played this song at the end of the night. All of the sounds are incredible with Tim and Bella. They are still a great band, but this was their greatest era.
you obviously know nothing of dMb or that they have yet to experience their "greatest era"!! to say that is to say that they have left their better days behind them, in which case, you are so wrong!! Every year they give us great music, I have been to 104 concerts and never once been disappointed!!
This was their greatest era. I have been a fan for well over 10 years, and have continuously seen them live over that entire span of time. I am not going to roll out my entire DMB resume here, but rest assured, I know the difference between good bad and average DMB shows. The winter 98 run was the last time this band in it's original lineup (RIP Roi) played like a band that was out to prove something They were hungry and played with passion. It has never been the same since "Everyday".
juan barros askin about the theory on this song, that is basically correct, but what you just said is actually called F# phrygian dominant, which is a mode of harmonic minor starting on the 5th note. the whole song is based around F#, including the jam reprise they do
by the way, does anyone know why dave stopped using that guitar (i looked into it and it's a Chet Atkins SST signature guitar) in like 2000 and switched to the traditional acoustic? i feel like the guitar he uses in this video (and like all of his shows before the turn of the millenium) sounds so much better than what he uses now..
The Chet SST is a Gibson guitar, and Dave Signed a deal with Taylor Guitars to play them exclusively from around 2001 on. I agree with you wholeheartedly. The Chet SST is Dave's signature guitar, his signature look. it's like Paul McCartney using a Rickenbacker Bass. It's iconic to him. I also agree with you that they sound better with Dave on the Chet. Guitar Purists will argue with you, but what the Chet lacks in finesse, it makes up for in character and raw power. It is the sound of DMB to me
Taylor doesnt sign contracts with artists, each artists buys them full price like any customers. They don't sponsor any artists. He uses Taylors live because of the power it has to keep up with the rest of the band and he uses Martins (same as he plays live with Tim Reynolds) in studio. The gibson was a nice guitar for the time, but Taylor is at the moment the best production guitar quality with an amazing pickup for clear sound.
I didn't know that about Gibson. You think you hear things from "reliable" sources...lol. Thanks for the clarification. I still wish he'd use the Chet in concert for a few songs now and then. Nothing wrong with kickin' things old school....
i like the edition of the trumpet player too, but at this time their concerts were well balanced with obscure songs and mainstream songs.... also they had a sick guest in almost every concer (Bela fleck, Victor Wooten, Tim Reynolds, Maceo Parker, etc.)
Dave's voice just sounds so powerful in this one...

No, it's not. Taylor didn't come out with the T5 line until 2005, and this video is from 1998. The guitar Dave is playing is the Chet Atkins SST.
