Song was written by Jimmy Van Heusen and Johnny Burke and sung by Dorothy Lamour in the 1946 Paramount film "Road to Utopia". Listen how the vastly underrated June Hutton leads the Pied Pipers backing Johnny!

It's useful to know that Mercer was primarily a lyricist.
He put the words, brilliantly, to several composers'
melodies, principally Harold Arlen, but also Henry Mancini (Moon River, Days of Wine&Roses), Hoagy Charmichael (Lazybones) and Harry Warren (Jeepers Creepers).
Mr Mercer did a lot of great songs like Moon River, In A Sentimel Mood and many many others. He is an icon of the American standards. This is a great hommage to him. Everybody loves his songs.
The original recording of ''Personality'' by Johnny Mercer hit no. 1 on the charts the first week in March 1946.
This song reminds me of a riddle that a girl put to all the guys at the lunch table one day the sixth grade. She asked, ''What do all girls have that all boys want that starts with a 'P'?'' Her answer that left all the guys speechless was of course ''P for Personality!'' -- like the song here. Somebody want to rename this song?

Read "Sex with Kings" to learn more about royal mistresses, including Mmes Pompadour and Du Barry. Love, love, love Johnny Mercer. Very underrated, but so talented. Thanks for posting this.
I am sorry...I attend the local school... you know that...what do they call it...that one over that there there...I sit in that chair...and what was the question...oh yeah, it's 14 inches long.
Madame Pompadour and Madame DuBarry were the two mistresses of King Louis XV of France. Both were famous all over Europe for being breathtakingly beautiful and having a great...personality!
Pompadour was a smart cookie. DuBarry was...very blonde. :)
What a truly great talent! It's said he wrote over a thousand songs! More than Paul McCartney! His songs would be popular and last longer! He had a great voice and always gave freely of himself to help other musicians and actors! His music will live forever as it should rightly be! Thanks IrRriS113nt for posting this great song!
Man ! they just don't write songs like this anymore...i'm still smiling !

The melody became "Phoneability" for a phone company spot in the 1950s. Cut lyrics went like--
"When Mrs. Jones can call her neighbor in Saint Paul
while baking chocolate brownies for tea.
She's got a lot of 'Phoneability'."
Johnny Mercer was one of the founders of Capitol Records in 1942 because he was not happy with his work at Columbia.
