Chris Hitchens is one of the most interesting intellects out there. His politics are interesting, in that he started off as a liberal and has become more conservative. He is not afraid to be provocative.
I think you are mistaking his passion and provocitaveness for anger and contempt. Dawkins is more of a fundamentalist atheist and I don't think you can parallel the 2.

You don't need to know what "true" Christianity is, or the finer points of Christian eschatology or apologetics, if you reject the base claim that God exists. There's no evidence for his existence and the universe is simpler without him. If there is no God, there is no reason to worry about what Paul of Tarsus did or did not say.

I speculate that in at most 500 years, the ENTIRE human race will be intelligent enough to realize religion is BS, and there is no God. That aside, we can really progress, by answering questions like, what caused the big bang... and mapping out human consciousness like we did the genome.
