I heard that some of the RS200's were tuned to produce 650 to 700hp, amazing when you think all this power came from just a 2.1l engine. If you search fifth gear 0 - 60 on YT, you will also here that this car held the world record 0 - 60 for 13 years, back when the video was uploaded in 2008, don't know if it has been beaten, but even so, the video shows that the Ariel Atom couldn't even beat it, incredible.
ford would dominate but than again with lancia EVC with 700 hp lancia would dominate again ( group b would be named to group s and probably cars would not be rallying but on tracks like formula couse as you know there was alredy porsche, ferrari, and jaguar on the scene )
Man, I luv this car with all my heart because it's a legend and in my case its the only one in my country(Malta), it not one of the 200 were made, it was build from the spare parts but it had the engine, gearbox and other engine parts from the 200 were made.
If anyone wants one..... Guy in Swansea has one up for sale... £99,995 1654miles! Well.......I know what i'll be having if my numbers come up SATURDAY!
I'd say it's pretty much guaranteed that the RS200 would have been an all conquering Group B monster had the category been allowed to go on. We shall never know though.
@bLoodykNuklz You are kinda right, though not entirely ... The cars were close enough, especially because they were building the homologation cars so they can be used as base after that and not a limited street version. And the number of homologation cars for Group B was small, not like for Gr.A later (see Escort RS Cosworth ..)
So yes, they are not entirely the same car, of course, though pretty close. Even if you buy a rally car with homologation for racing, your mechanics gotta make it run ..
Come on, it's not like a street RS200 isn't a Group B car at all. Well, it's not a rally car tuned for Group B specifications but it's still a homologation car for Group B. You want to say that street 037, street Delta S4, street 205 T16 or street Sport Quattro can't be considered Group B cars in some way?
I actually kind of wished Ford made a lower powered, 2wd version of this. Could have taken a lot of the market for the Toyota MR2. This car is one of the few Fords I like. Too bad it's rep got mared in Portugal.
1, lower power is ALWAYS a bad thing. And this is RWD, with the option of 4x4, they took the gear stick used for switching between RWD and 4WD out eventually.
I think everyone who examines all the group b cars carefully would see that Audi's car was outdated, when it was brand new, it was incredible and really inovative. However, by the time the S1 was around all the other competitive cars were also AWD, in addition to that they were also mid engine and had much better balance. Audi had a prototype for Group S which was a completely new design from scratch, AWD and mid engine. They themselves knew the S1 was outdated.
I wouldn't go that far, the normal RS200 had it problems, it actually had a bad power to weight ratio so it had laggy torque on lower rpm's. They were in the middle of fixing it with the E2 in 86 but the collapse of Group B pretty much put the E2 on hold forever.
Still one of my favorite cars, you can find them for sale used every once in awhile, they usually range from 70 to 500k depending on the model and what's been done to it.
@kisetsushin power to weight was fine turbo lag is why it was slow in the lower rpms, also the more rpms aan engine can hold the less low end torque they tend to have, rs200=9000rpm
I'm not sure, i read an article that said it had surprisingly low power to weight, which i thought was weird too, maybe the article just didn't know what it was talking about. The RS200 is really light and has a lot of power.
iam from germany, but in a area miidle south germany, odenwald, lives a man who buy in the end of the season from rs200, one car from ford sport departmend,
but he can drive by with insurens on german streets, he say that his car have 800HP last modifyd version, this version was used at least in race, the other one with more HP was not more real tested in race, may be to much troubleshooting about defekts engines,
but he can speed up to 100km/h less than 2,5 second, to 150km/h 2 second more,
real test drivers was messured with his car faster as he,
Group B ended with the death of Henri Toivonen in Corsica (in a Lancia) in -86. Audi left Group B after this rally. 87-88-89 season became more or less a "Domani sempre Domani " everyone was waiting for FIA to decide what to do with rally. Group A was "founded" i 86, with Lancia as THE car.Suddenly Toyota, Mitsubishi and Subaru joined Group A, winning the whole of the 90`s,only 1991 season was won buy a non Japanees car(lancia of course).
The RS200 rally car put out 450bhp, ford had planned for a second Evoltion which could output up to 600bhp. But after Evolutions were banned after Corsica they were stuck with the 450bhp engine for the rest of the season.
The original Group B RS200 had 450hp, but in 2009 Mach2 Racing started another RS200 at the Pikes Peak Hillclimb (built from '84-'86 and still racing!) with 950hp engine that had a built-in NOS bottle that can add +200hp power-boost. That's why some people belive this car has more than 1000 horespower.
NO!! the Ford rs100 put out about 1150hp and 0-60 in 2.1 seconds it will beat anything it comes up agianst...the only problem the car has killed so many people that it was banned because its a shit load of power on a very light car for someone to handle
this was a group b car and group b was banned after only four years because there were some major accidents most fatal so the FIA desided to ban group b after the death of Henri Toivonen on the tour de corse on the 1980's
I entered a competition to win one of these when they came out. It was run by The Sun newspaper. Its still my dream car and First thing I would buy if I won the lottery! I actually saw one of these (road going ver) sell for just over £30,000 just a few years ago with 800 miles on the clock. Now they're worth nearly twice that value again and increasing all the time. I would have bought it if I had had the cash, for that price.
When competitive drivers (even very skilled ones) are pushing to the limit it's inevitable that there will be crashes. It's not the car's fault when it does.
These were (and are) fantastic cars and with the right driver can get from any A to any B faster than any car on the planet.
Today there are RS200s with truly ridiculous power outputs - did I say ridiculous - I meant fantastic!.. Look out for one of them with 900+bhp at Pikes Peak this year.
I had the privilege of a passenger ride in an RS200 at Snetterton back in 1985. About 4 laps driven by John Taylor, what an experience! Mind you, a remapped Seat Leon Cupra Tdi might accelerate faster now lol!!
its not the rally drivers fault that group-b stopped, its the fucking spectators, jumping out in middle of the road, and that crash that banned group-b, the spectators didn't move out the way! they used the worst spot to spectate and then to me it was suicide..
Right, here goes: I'm 45 years old and went to all the 1980's RAC rallies. I saw all the Group B cars, except the ugly Citroen, in the forests and parks of Great Britain. Our spectators behaved well, but still the cars crashed or burned. On most rallies the spectators behaved well, but still the cars crashed.
Perhaps with modern safety devices, tyres and transmissions etc, etc, etc, the cars would be safer but probably a lot faster too. Ever see a works car on the Isle of Man? Insane speed.
no im talking about other race car sports, i see what you mean, group-b cars are deadly(but fantastic) other race car sports like motorcross i once saw on the news someone died cos he jumped out or something but i see what you mean...
In Group B there were many good cars, as the Lancia Delta S4, The AUDI Quattro and the Ford RS 200. Now, about Ford, I think there was not enough time for that car to approve its real worth...
it was only banned cos of the stupid spectators they stood in the most retard position ever of the qoutside of a bend that level with the track it those IDIOT faults that the Rs200 was banned
That was one reason, Group B was banned because of all the spectators and drivers dying. The deaths that were the final nail in the coffin were Henri Toivien(Correct spelling?) and his co-driver, they were piloting an Delta S4.
E' la vettura che ha fatto registrare il guinness dei primati dell'accelerazione da 0 a 100 all'ora... un vero mostro di tecnologia e potenza bruta...era la vettura più compatta del gruppo B
They didnt continue with it because Groub B was canceled in 1986, mostly thanks to those stupid viewers on stages. They just had to try and touch the car. You can blame them, mostly spanish and french, that we have those boring WRC cars of today...
RS200 saw its evolution on rallycross on late 80's and 90's
See what i don't understand is if Ford had made this prodegy of a rally car, why didn't they just continue with it? So what if this car isn't all that popular or widely known it's a really nice car.
I love how hard these things accelerate. You'd think it'd pop a wheelie, or take off, or something. I definitely hope to own one of the normal ones some day. Until then, I'll keep racing them in Gran Turismo 4...
