Most solar installers are very good and do an efficient job. You won't get the incentives if you don't use a solar certified installer.
There are many things you can do yourself. Seal leaks and improve insulation, add solar screens in summer and remove them in winter, buy energy star appliances when you need new ones, use a clothes line instead of a dryer, ajust your thermostat closer to the outside temp, higher in summer , lower in winter a dree or 2 will make a difference.
