It is NOT yet illegal to slaughter horses in the US. There are a few states where it is illegal, but the Federal bills have not passed. We are going into the 111th Congress & we have been trying to ban slaughter of horses since the 107th Congress.
They did not pass anything. They closed the plants in TX through a state action. They closed Cavel in Ill through a state action. That means it is illegal ONLY in those states. It is legal in all the other states with the exception of CA & AZ which also banned it through state actions. The FEDERAL legislation which would ban it in the entire country and also ban the exports NEVER PASSED. It is still LEGAL TO SLAUGHTER HORSES IN THE US. I rescue horses & I am an attorney & it is still legal.

I did not take the film. The Humane Farming Association did. Horse slaughter is already illegal due to a statute called the Humane Slaughter Act of 1958. Congress is so dumb they are trying to get a bill passed that is already in effect. They should enforce the Humane Slaughter Act and prohibit the exports.

A captive bolt on a cows skull factures the skull, penetrating slighly, rendering the cow totally oblivious to what is happening. A horse skull is totally different is size , shape and constuction. The captive bolt only stuns the horse, leaving it concious to everthing that is happening, pain included, they are only momentarily stunned, not unconcious.

The thing they use is called the captive bolt pistol. It is like a drill but it does not kill the horses, ponies, donks or mules. Even foals are slaughtered!!!!
The captive bolt pistol drives a drill bit like piece of metal into the skull. The horses regain consciousness after 30 seconds, which is why they work so fast to get them hoisted and shackled. It is revolting, painful to the horses and they are fully aware that they are being vivisected. It is a violation of the Humane Slaughter Act of 1958. That means it is illegal.

Slaughter of horses in the USA is NOT bannned. There are some states that have banned it, but the legislation has not yet passed. We export them to Mexico, Canada, and Japan instead of killing them here. There also is slaughter in the UK and France and thoughout eastern Europe.

Yes, that is correct but that does NOT mean that it is illegal yet. The bills in the House and the Senate have to pass. And those were state actions, not Federal actions. So, it is still legal to slaughter in states except for Arizona, California, Illinois and Texas. It is only in those states that horse slaughter is illegal - but only for human consumption. If Cavel could make enough money slaughter for zoos, they can still do that. They are trying to get the Supreme Court to hear their appeal

Horse meat is favored by the French, Belgians, Italians and the Japanese. We export horses via plane to Japan and the horses there are 'fattened up' just like ducks and geese for foie gras. In that country, they use razor blades and cut them that way to bleed them out. My ex husband lives in Japan (not Japanese though) and he says that only men eat horse sushi. There are horse slaughter plants in every country imaginable including eastern Europe and South America.

No. this was taken at BelTex in Texas. Since Beltex and Dallas Crown were shut down by the state of Texas, they now take American horses over the border to Mexico and slaughter them there.

A 12 gauge is not a large enough caliber to create the massive brain destruction. You have to understand that horses cannot be restrained. I have seen a pony put down by her owner with a .357 magnum. The pony was sedated and the woman was a rated markswoman. There is no method of slaughtering a horse that is legal. The statute states that the animal must be made unconsious with one blow. This never happens. Horse slaughter is illegal. Only the USDA NEVER enforces the law.

You are wrong. The captive bolt is used to protect the workers. The horses are often not successfully struck and they regain full consciousness THIRTY seconds after being hit with the thing. Horses' brains are farther back in the skull compared to cattle which the captive bolt was designed for. Horses are aware they are being vivisected and they feel every cut and stab and chainsaw.

Jade it is more common than you think. They will take any horse or pony and they use exactly the same method to kill the horses. They also take horses and ponies from Ireland. These are racehorses who did not do well and privately owned horses and ponies. google fund4horses and look at the advisory board and you will get the name of the gal who works against slaughter in the UK. well im amarican, i love my horse to death i actually rescued my horse. she was skin and bones when i got her. there are alot of people that are jerks to there horses but there are also alot of kind caring people so dont go blaming everything on the americans cause i bet canada and other countrys do the same thing

In Asia they don't slaughter horses for meat. They feed them to big cats at zoos so the patrons can watch the cats 'hunt' the horses and tear them apart. That is worse.

I did not take the film. The Humane Farming Association did. Horse slaughter is already illegal due to a statute called the Humane Slaughter Act of 1958. Congress is so dumb they are trying to get a bill passed that is already in effect. They should enforce the Humane Slaughter Act and prohibit the exports.

There are slaughterhouses in England that slaughter Thoroughbred racehorses, ponies, and any other horse they get. You may not eat it widely in England, but you do slaughter the horses and export the meat to other parts of the EU. Ireland exports their horses to your country for slaughter. You should educate yourself about the issue. It is NOT old or 'poor' horses. Nobody wants to eat 'old' or 'poor' anything.

i agree i have 4 and i love them dearly thats never happening to mine there not leaving my backyard i enjoy getting up everymorning and going out to the barn in my pj's feeding them go into the horse and getting dressed and what not and then going out and they should be finshed and then riding them for a bit and then put them in the field and every otherhour i ride them for an hour and then at might i out them back in there stall i don;t know what i would do with out them

Thank you for the information. Here in the US we do it this way because they have to be alive when they are butchered or the meat becomes tainted. Do you slaughter Fjord horses in Finland? In my opinion horses should not be slaughtered, but I am aware that this is dependent upon one's culture. Gunshot is the best way to put a horse down if you are an excellent shot, the horse is sedated and you can't or don't want to pay a vet. Thanks for your comment.

All the animals in the world have right to live including human. Not just horse slaughter is wrong but any slaughter house is the result of mentally SICK PEOPLES including non vegetarians because of whom all slaughter houses are there.
If anybody wants to help this poor animals they should just stop eating animals which will automatically stop most animal killings. When eat kill anything we should think about killing ourselves first. No one likes to be killed including animals.

Horses carry cops, horses are therapy animals, horses are very different from the so called 'food' animals. As I have said, I am a vegan so I am against all slaughter. Horses ARE different.

Horses are slaughtered in the USA by 3 foreign owned slaughterhouses. They buy the horses (if they are not stolen and many are) for anywhere from 100 to 500 bucks. Based on their weight, they are worth 20 bucks a pound. Greed is why horses and their cousins are slaughtered. Nobody gets rich in the US from slaughter except the foreign owned companies who pay NO taxes. None.

They have different skull structures than cattle and they use the same captive bolt for horses as they do cattle. It does not work for horses. Hence, it is illegal.

A captive bolt on a cows skull factures the skull, penetrating slighly, rendering the cow totally oblivious to what is happening. A horse skull is totally different is size , shape and constuction. The captive bolt only stuns the horse, leaving it concious to everthing that is happening, pain included, they are only momentarily stunned, not unconcious.
Horse slaughte is inhumane.
Mexican horse slaughter is worse.

I posted the video to raise awareness about horse slaughter not only in the United States, but Mexico, Canada, Argentina, Poland, Germany and Japan. The list goes on and on and on. The thing they use is called the captive bolt pistol. It is like a drill but it does not kill the horses, ponies, donks or mules. Even foals are slaughtered!!!!

It is revolting, painful to the horses and they are fully aware that they are being vivisected. It is a violation of the Humane Slaughter Act of 1958. That means it is illegal.
