  • I can't enjoy this because it's skipping . . .

  • Is this skipping?

  • i love her...

  • Patty is my biggest inspiration when it comes to songwriting.... my greatest wish would be to record a song with her someday.... I actually emailed her this week to ask her that! you what they say.... if you don't ask, you'll never know....... JDx

  • Whether Patty or the Chicks...I love this song!

  • comment c'est terriblement génial.

  • comment c'est terriblement génial

  • Some people are born to sing and write songs. Pure genius is what she is. She's among the very best and it's too bad she's not as recognized as she should be.

still, we can hear her now!

  • Her voice is really beautyfull but I like the DC Version better.

  • love her

  • I never knew she was the original songwriter to this, I always thought the dixie chicks were. I'd have to say both versions are amazing, but damn she wrote such a beautiful song, which isn't easy. So props to her.

  • Stunnng

  • A song that contains lifetimes. Unbelievable.

  • She is from Maine! What talent! She is amazing!

  • Danielson sent me. Genuinely heart wrenching.

  • Makes me think of my son and daughter, make me wish I'd been a better parent...

  • @RustyCat666

Remember Rusty, it is never to late to make it a loving and caring day xxx

  • Thank you for sharing this.

I think she says "no guide", not "no god".....

  • you can tell that this is patty's song

  • @encepurdy68 I can tell you are bored.

  • Such evocative lyrics that are in sync with the emotion of the singer; ergo, connection with we the listeners.........

    Thanks for posting!

  • Such a beautiful, sad song. I have never heard it before.

  • @shakantala you havent been missing anything.

  • I think this is the saddest song in the world, but so good...:*(

  • One of my favorite songs ever. Patty Griffin amazes me.

  • So... in what year did Patty release this song for the first time? which album?

  • It was originally recorded for "Silver Bell" in 2000, but the album was shelved and never released. You can find it online, though. She re-recorded it for "Impossible Dream" in 2004. Beautiful album.

  • My gawd....what a voice..

  • Thanks goes to PBS for helping introduce truly great artists, like Patty, to the world.

As you listen and watch this woman as she performs, it's easy to see that her artistry in singing and songwriting is quite simply at the "Top of the World"

  • LOVE HER.

  • The purest voice on the planet, live or in studio. Period.

  • well i like the dixie chicks version better who copied who

  • Chicks covered Patty's song.

  • ok thx

  • If you haven't seen Patty Griffin perform live, oh man, please do! The most amazing live performance. I go every time she's in Nashville.

  • diosss esta tia e sfabulosa ni q dixie chixk niq naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa ella e sla verdader ay unica!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ajajajaj

  • she does a marvelous job and wrote the song really really well, i i find this version beautiful but the dixie chicks cover, is so moving it brings tears to my eyes, the way they arragned it and the instrumental backing is jsut so beautiful patty must have had faith that they could pull it off and she was right

  • I have aspirations to be half the writer Patty is! She just has a knack for stirring that place in your soul few artists have the capability of reaching these days.

    LOVE HER

  • until right now i only heard the Dixie Chicks version...but of course Patty wrote it. Brilliant!!!!!!!

  • I've listened to Patty for years, but I never heard this song until this morning. It knocked me over, which is what truly great songs, and songwriters, do. Thanks.

  • This song just sucks you in. Such a powerful, but beautiful, and well written, song. I love it. One of my favourites :)

  • This is regret set to music.

  • well said!

  • What a great performance. Patty does it best, then there's the rest.

  • Heavenly.

  • What a voice! Its like the purest essence. And such lovely lyrics... Ms Griffin is a poet among pretenders

  • So well put, thanks very much for the comment!

  • Beautiful song. DC's did a great job, but I much prefer the song and her songwriter. Love this!

  • ´That's true, i discovered Patty through the Dixie Chicks back in 2004. Felt like i had found the source of the river...

  • Yep gc. I saw her on Public television about 10 years ago. It's a shame that someone like this isn't more popular. A hidden gem. "There's a whole lot of singin' that's never gonna be heard", very poignant coming from her.

  • Exactly, I agree with you on every word you said. Nowadays everybody can sing along to Lady Gaga and her million copies but nobody really pays attention to the lyrical shape of a song anymore, yet at the same time the artistic ability to express oneself lyrically still co-exists hence the line you mentioned. It's a sad world we live in. Beautiful piece of music as to render any musical production ever since nearly irrelevant.

  • @gcbfolk you're right, it DID feel like findin the source of the river...wow. what an amazing lady.

  • @gcbfolk I discovered her through the DC's as well, I believe it was because of Let Him Fly. That song just blew my mind was stood out from the rest of their songs and thank you Patty!

  • @gcbfolk

I discovered Patty the same way....through the Dixie Chicks........and glad I did. What a great way to put it......"Found the source of the river"......my thoughts exactly. The more I explore her tunes, the more I am pulled in. This version is wonderful

  • wow...

  • stunning
