I didn't bother to read all the comments to see if someone already said what I'm going to say... but actually apps for Windows 8 MUST be compiled for ARM processors to run on tablets, so no, you won't be able to use all of your desktop apps. At least until companies start selling (i bet for an extra charge) ARM versions of their software. And even then, I don't really think tabs will replace computers, IMO tabs have to be foolproof, and a PC-like tab just isn't.
Smartphones have already evolved into dual core mobile computers with system RAM that's heading for the 2GB range. I can tell you exactly what upcoming phones need which would make a lot of people abandon their laptops, and it isn't much.
1. A mini-HDMI port, for easy transfer of video & audio to a TV.
2. A bluetooth keyboard/mouse combo.
That's it! The phone instantly turns into a small wireless CPU unit, and working with items like large docs & spreadsheets becomes manageable.
surely Android is laggier because iOS and WinMo are optimized for few devices, whereas Android is made to run on anything and everything? Not that I'm one to disagree with a Google engineer, just my opinion! Also...where the hell is cyanogen mod 8?!
@RealTalkOnlyBro actually what this guys saying is true, i have an android phone & an ipod touch and when load a web page on iOS and place my finger on my screen, it stops loading, android keeps loading the page no matter what.
I want to be able to boot between webos/android/wp8/ios on my tablet
I want synergy cross platform
I want dalvik-in-a-card on webos/wp8/ios
I want enyo on wp8/android/ios
I want Matias Duarte. to take back all the good bits of webos into android
I want to buy a cheap ass asian slabphone running webos, with an icon to install the cyanogenmod dual boot on it, but still bypassing the licensing fee shakedowns thanks to webos' patent position
I 100% AGREE WITH WHAT YOU SAID !!! If my dumb 4 year old computer which has a 1.7g dual core cpu and 1 gb ram runs photoshop why can't my overclocked galaxy s 2 do that if it has similar specs ??? (1.6 ghz, 1 gb ram)
on a side note i think that windows doesn't suck at all, it does what its supposed to do as long as your not stupid.
was netscape the best example for lumbering giant about to die? it seems like you think webos is a dead man walking (and you're right about the graveyard not being far away) but look at firefox .. from the ashes of netscape/gecko comes one of the best browsers on the market. could webos be reborn into something beautiful with this event horizon of tablets? i hope so!
Open WebOS. Good move. Interesting to see how their Windows tablets sell. "Ice Cream Sandwich"? How gay can you get? Next release is "Creamy Cum" or "Faggot Fudge Packer". Google is one slip up away from pissing off their developers.
Concise & straight to the point however Google will insure the continued success of Android on smartphones & upcoming tablets with ICS updates. Windows 8 wins in productive but not in everything else, & I reserve the right to change my opinion when Windows 8 is actually available to the masses on tablets.
What applications are you so attached to in Windows? I use my laptop primarily for web browsing, word processing, and media playback... all of which can be done on Android (for the most part).
@sysop3 Nothing that doesn't require a huge amount of GPU power. IMO, Windows is only relevant for gaming these days. *nix OSes can do everything Windows can and more.
@sysop3 Design, animation, nonlinear video editing, proper word processing, and so on. And that's just MY job. Everyone relies on Windows in some way because they don't have software elsewhere. So the question is, which will be created first? The programs or the tablets that can run them? You know where I'm placing bets. I don't like it any more than anyone else.
Will Windows 8 really be able to run at least "most"/"a lot" of my desktop/current Windows apps? Naaah... Don't think so, azrienoch. Windows Phone 7 apps - sure, but Windows 7/Windows 8 desktop apps, nope.
Makes me sad about webos... kinda. I am trying to think of some desktops program I would prefer to use on a tablet so that I can be as sure about Windows 8 being ... useful.
its sad but i agree with web OS's fate, but on the other hand windows 8 seems to be a flop from the get go at least on the desktop side as microsoft is knows up to this point for its legacy support, but who know, maybe they will just throw money at it till its accepted.........
"I predict that when Windows 8 is officially released, it will mean the almost instantaneous death of Android tablets."
I fear you may be right, but I really hope you are wrong.
Perhaps the future for Android, or at least the android community, if not android as a Google backed OS, if for android like features to be added into a full Linux OS for tablets.
I agree with @azrienoch on the tablet front. Win8 will be the defining tablet OS. with phones i'm not so sure. windows have a habit of missing the important element of a phone. the ability to make calls. i might be wrong but i doubt it
Just like Netscape, you say? *cough*Firefox*cough*
It would be nice if a move to webOS didn't necessarily mean abandoning Android as a platform. However, that's how it seems to be with most desktop OSes as well- only DELL and HP seem keen on selling Linux along with their Windows options, and even then only online. System76 is probably the only obvious example of building around an alternative to the 'main guys' working.
However, it would be nice to have any OS you want on any phone.
@scionicspectre too bad theres no standards for cellphones like on desktops :/ the fact that theres so many manufacturers of ARM based CPUs/SoCs makes it difficult....if an OS works with one (say an Exynos CPU) it might not work with another (lets say a TI OMAP ) even though the Exynos and OMAP both use the same CPU type and GPU type
Well, there's Linaro and the ARM community has really tightened up quite a bit compared to a few years ago, so it may not be so farfetched as we proceed down the line. I think something like Gallium could go a long way in providing a common hardware & driver basis for many different OSes (including Windows Phone) to share.
Still, you're right- at the moment this isn't easy at all. It won't be common for at least another generation. But we're moving towards this kind of solidarity.
You may want to check the compatibility of the apps and programs running in the w8 tablet environment. If you use a tegra 2 or any Arm based w8 tablet, it is rumored that you will need a arm based app. x86 or x64(intel or amd) programs won´t run in Arm and viceverza. As said before, this is only a rumor, but if true it might affect somewhat the market the w8 is creating. XD, i would like to extend myself and write a whole script, but youtube limits me in the doing.
The last minute you talked about phones and tablets and your prediction of getting away from desktops...guess what, Steve Jobs already said that years ago.
@MagicRiggs eh i dont think itll happen..... at least not as much as they think it is.....desktops will always be ahead of mobile devices in terms of power and amount of intensive software they can run... sure for web browsing and watching cat videos they can be replaced maybe even for basic schoolwork.....but id never completely abandon my desktop
Weird, so I start with owning a WinMo2003SE device, go to WinMo5, then WinMo6.1. Currently looking to go to Android and then might end up with a Windows 8 Phone. I can actually see it happening. I think the likelyhood of an Android operating system being a f@#$ton better than any Chrome crap though. Imagine how bad a Chrome phone would be!
@therealdjflip Basically a middle finger to Verizon for putting their version of Google Wallet on the Galaxy Nexus, because they wouldn't get the money for the phone if it was bought unlocked.
i love webOS & hate window 8 but the guy has got a point. microsoft could have been pulling the wool over our eyes the whole time. but where does BB10 & RIM come into all this?
After many, many, many seconds of searching I'm sure you got the story perfectly, but I'm just here to raise the suspicion and perhaps light a fire under your ass to be more accurate.

Only if those desktop applications are compiled for ARM. So, nothing older than Windows 8. I'm not sure Windows 8 tablets will be "laptop killers."
But they'll put a dent in iPad sales. :D
