Frank Bruno could of won this fight, but I think it was down to experience. He should of out Jabbed Witherspoon then come on heavy in the later rounds then he wouldnt of ran out of steam. But no matter what they wanna say about Frank Bruno he is still the Former Heavyweight Champion of the world ! You try doing what he done !!!!
Love those BOMBS 'Spoon was tossing. Some of those punches were practically thrown from outside the ring! He wasn't about to let Horizontal Frank off the hook. Devasting.
I wish Earnie Shavers was a little younger and him and Witherspoon had a fight. The battle of the monster overhand rights would have been great to watch.Whoever landed first would have been the winner.Although I think Witherspoon had the better chin and more stamina between the two.
Man I wish they had tournaments like this nowdays in EVERY weight class to establish an undisputed world champion. Don King did the same thing in the middleweight division back in 2000/2001 and B-Hop swept that tourny. Too many champions don't wanna face each other nowdays.
I agree with bilkomax. Its sad today. Frank and Tim were both really good underrated fighters, I hope both men are living well with whatever Don King let them earn.
Thankyou MITOGEN for showing this fight, been looking for it for quite some time now. I do recall that this fight was shown the following morning(no satellite channels in those days) I have to say that the commentators really did'nt give Witherspoon enough credit. He was a very canny fighter; and for me he really bossed this fight, from the 7th onwards, there was only going to be one winner. Frank was a very competent fighter, but he was not in the same league as Witherspoon/Tyson and Smith.
@MITOGEN I can tell you that I recognised the first one straight off as an instrumental version of 'Say I'm your number one' by Princess. Thanks for the upload.
@POCPlc23 Cheers, many thanks for that info, I've never heard of tthat song/performer band before. I think I prefer the instrumental version to be honest though. ;)
I suppose the end theme must be specially made for ITV boxing, it doesn't sound like the one they usually had (the one they had befote the Big Fight live theme)
@MITOGEN was the music from 5:55 to 7:55 on the origional ITV show or did someone add it themselves. Its princess say im your number 1 a great evocotive music of what it meant to be a kid in 1980's london!
@sikhman100 It was on the original ITV show, cheers yeah POCPlc23 confirmed it was Princess. This was the first time I ever heard it, on the boxing show.
@sikhman100 Yeah, I remember hearing Princess booming from cars on the streets of London during the 80's. Still remember seeing her on TOTP. I wonder what she's up to these days.
I've just heard about Terry lawless passing away, very sad particularly at this time of year, he kinda disappeared from the boxing scene after big Frank, but was a great ambassador in the fight game for many a year before the Bruno era, producing more than one world champ, a very compassionate man as witnessed on this clip, RIP Terry, and thanks
Cheers, it wasn't shown live on ITV though if I recall correctly all those years ago, just remember listening to it on the radio at the time and they showed it the next day on ITV? Think they may have had it live at cinemas etc.
You do remember correctly, i should have perhaps said "at the time" i can remember sitting in my mates car listening live and then next morning only seeing the first 3 rounds coz i had to be at work around ten as i recall??
This is the same kind of thing like the Lewis fight: Bruno gets caught with a big punch and then he freezes after getting hit with a flurry and just disconnects...perhaps it had something to do with his stamina? I dunno.
Yeah, thx for the upload... I bought a VHS from an online peddler a while back, but the tracking was all screwed up... I've been aching to see this for eons.
At his best, Tim was a world-class grinder. It didn't matter in the least that his chest and waist were a bit -- uh, "fleshy" -- in this match.

Great fight! Bruno rocked Tim hard a few times in the early rounds only to fold in the end.
