The French marching pace is slower than most because it's based around heartbeat. if you read the 1792 Drill manual, it explains, french soldiers move their feet diferently for the same reason. It's to help conserve energy for fighting instead of marching. Good idea I think!
I like this march for some reason. When my daughter heard it first time and saw the legion marching, she said "Hey, the dont have to run, they are the french foreign legion, it is the others who need to run".
The reason the march is so slow is because, when the Legion was first formed, the soldiers straggled badly. Because of this, the Legion has been allowed to march slower. But, try and make fun of this to a Legionnaire!
You try a quick march for 3 hours in a row under a blazing desert sun with full backpack and a heavy XIXth century rifle. Then you will understand why the Legion adapted to a slower pace of marching.
@mbabist01 Wrong. The march is so slow because it is impossible to march in the sand any faster. The march dates back to late 19th century, but the 88 beats didn't become the standard until after the Legion got busy in North Africa.
dont knock it .. if you have ever been associated with them superb soldiers who swagger and stand tall in ranks of warriors 180 per min gurkas.. who were proud to serve with them in one battle ..their motto 'no regrets '

I was under the imperssion it was 88 steps per minute was because even then they were considered the best, and given a "royal" march, a slow march.

I read the 88 steps were more practicable in the desert. makes sense, holding 120 on sand must be very tiring.
Stalin111 2 years ago
Oh yes they march at that beat - no wonder they are placed at the end of parades!
jonjamg 2 years ago 2
the 88 steps are a tradition the légion értrangère apperantly they distinquis theyre with it
idioot501 2 years ago
It originated from the fact that FFL units were frequently marching in the deserts of North Africa and taking long, slow steps made sense in sand.
