Yes, you could get a more capable notebook. There is no question about that. What you cannot get is a notebook that is both as thin as, and as light as, the MacBook Air that has equivalent or higher specs. Not at the moment.

well, in a lot of ways he's right. the macbook air is a very fine piece of technology, a breakthrough in many ways. the direction of it being fully wireless makes a lot of sense so this machine will be mimicked for years to come.
admittedly, it's an impressive piece of tech, but it looks a lot like a copy of the X505 by sonya few years back except with a bit of tech upgrades, and I honestly can't see this being mimicked in the future, less USB port, no CD ROM is definitely not the way to go.
sure, when you modernize something to such an extreme your going to appear to copy other products.
and i'll have to fully disagree about USB and especially CDs. the apple direction for a long time has been "pure wireless"
the Air"Port" product direction that first appeared 1999, is fully developed on Macs now, but with PCs they are about 4 years behind. Now the Airport series of products makes everything wireless, except the pesky "power" cable :)

On the Air the CD Rom was taken out when it was still the preferred method of traferring data, even USB, you could use external hard drives or pen drive and what not. If it was an upgrade such as putting in a Blu-Ray, that would be different.

It is a SUB notebook. Everything is done wirelessly these days. EVERYTHING!! If you don't like the Air and have no need for it like traveling or a business man get a Macbook Pro.
The only thing keeping me from buying this beautiful notebook is the price. I don't mind not having an optical drive; I never use CD/DVDs anymore, I use flash drives for temp storage, and I download all my software.

The iMac price dropped substantially with the new 2008 update (I feel kinda ripped off, bought 2 months ago)... So maybe the Macbooks will drop in price or increase in performance. I'm hoping for multi-touch, aluminum case, and possibly backlit keyboard. I hope Apple also brings back the matte displays, I'm tired of seeing my reflection when looking at dark images :(
yeah, I hear you and agree... be aware that Apple has a 2 week price protection policy which might not of helped you on the iMac, but may in the future. I try and only buy Apple refurbed units so I don't incur the loss as much. Yes, the new MacBooks should be aluminum, but backlit keys while a GREAT feature, probably won't make it into the consumer level mac laptop space. We'll see soon! PS: I use "Lab Tick" to keep my keyboard lit all the time, kinda cool!

Well, you just need to be a more advanced user that's all. The MacBook Air is about 4 years ahead of everyone and even about 1 year ahead of many Mac users. It's how ALL laptops will work in 10 years, since it's using fast wireless for most everything. It doesn't saddle you down with obsolete CD disks or DVDs. All that is now wireless in the Mac world but I agree it will take Windows users awhile to figure it out.
apple does an amazing job packaging their products. everything is placed neatly in the box without anything being broke. my dell laptop came to me with a pre-broken monitor, and dell gave me trouble trying to return it because of some guy in india thought i intentionally broke it. i bought an hp desktop and apple notebook for college since then, and i love the apple. i use it for my graphic design class, since most animated movies are made with macs. steve jobs is a genius.

Yes, technically, Macs are quite a bit more powerful than Windows. They are full blown UNIX boxes with far more customizability and software selection than Windows has to offer. Plus OSX is more battle tested than Windows could ever hope to be in business situations, so it's the machine to have if you are a power user.
And the DUMBEST argument is probably the one-button mouse thing. Macs have shipped with 4-button mice for what, 6 years now? Even though their mouse sucks IMO, it's still a retarded argument.
the fact that it has no disk drive is just a sign of the times. Disks are on there way out. you can upload most software through the net and the same can be said of movies and music.

And what would you use a disk drive for? Installing programs and copying/playing media. Considering you can get most programs from the internet today, you can find any program you want. And for media, why not iTunes?

Business professionals who work for a medium to large size company will never use these. First of all, it costs way to much for what it is. Second, while you may not need an optical drive, most business professionals do as swapping files via USB stick is cost prohibitive. Third, there are many new laptops, that while not as thin, although close, weigh about the same as the Air. I can't see any reason why the Air will supplant the ThinkPad as the businessman's laptop of choice.
Yeah, I don't see the company buying them for workers. But if the office or whatever runs macs, workers usually like to have a second computer for travel. This is for personal preference. And here's another thing to think about: It has mac os x on it. It isn't a thinkpad, so you expect high quality. (Not to mention the ability to run windows if you need to.)

well, in a lot of ways he's right. the macbook air is a very fine piece of technology, a breakthrough in many ways. the direction of it being fully wireless makes a lot of sense so this machine will be mimicked for years to come.

admittedly, it's an impressive piece of tech, but it looks a lot like a copy of the X505 by sonya few years back except with a bit of tech upgrades, and I honestly can't see this being mimicked in the future, less USB port, no CD ROM is definitely not the way to go.

sure, when you modernize something to such an extreme your going to appear to copy other products.
and i'll have to fully disagree about USB and especially CDs. the apple direction for a long time has been "pure wireless"
the Air"Port" product direction that first appeared 1999, is fully developed on Macs now, but with PCs they are about 4 years behind. Now the Airport series of products makes everything wireless, except the pesky "power" cable :)

As for USB and CDs. what's the point of making it wireless if it meant that you need another machine that got a built in CD rom anyway? As for purely wireless CD rom, well, don't they have that already?
I have no idea what you meant by the Air Port, I wasn't old enought to care 'back in the days, but I find it unlikely that it would take 4 years for PC to 'catch up', if it's actually useful.

On the Air the CD Rom was taken out when it was still the preferred method of traferring data, even USB, you could use external hard drives or pen drive and what not. If it was an upgrade such as putting in a Blu-Ray, that would be different.
Let's face it, the Air isn't morderning anything, it a product that's aimed at a new niche.

The only thing keeping me from buying this beautiful notebook is the price. I don't mind not having an optical drive; I never use CD/DVDs anymore, I use flash drives for temp storage, and I download all my software.
But for $1800; I'd get more with a Macbook, and for less money. I'm just stating my case, not telling you what to do (SO NO REPLIES SAYING "DUDE UR WRONG THE AIR PWNS MACBOOK SUX"). If you're thinking about buying this, however, wait for July 1st. Maybe new Macbooks. I did 500 chars!

oh, no problem, $1749 or so is a lot and yes, new MacBooks are due at any moment so it will be interesting to see how close they get to the MBA in weight/size. June 9th is the big day for the iPhone and we could see other stuff right before that. Glad you understand that CD/DVDs are obsolete, so many people are SO stuck on the past on that! So that's cool DUDE! :)

The iMac price dropped substantially with the new 2008 update (I feel kinda ripped off, bought 2 months ago)... So maybe the Macbooks will drop in price or increase in performance. I'm hoping for multi-touch, aluminum case, and possibly backlit keyboard. I hope Apple also brings back the matte displays, I'm tired of seeing my reflection when looking at dark images :(

yeah, I hear you and agree... be aware that Apple has a 2 week price protection policy which might not of helped you on the iMac, but may in the future. I try and only buy Apple refurbed units so I don't incur the loss as much. Yes, the new MacBooks should be aluminum, but backlit keys while a GREAT feature, probably won't make it into the consumer level mac laptop space. We'll see soon! PS: I use "Lab Tick" to keep my keyboard lit all the time, kinda cool!

I think macbook air is Apple's strategy they're going to compete with some umpc with no cd/dvd-rom & with that macbook air is much powerful... 'till now with some new umpc's but mac-air has wireless support that no umpc has...:) it is still advance...'cause you know in the future it's gonna be all digital storage & more wireless than ever now. :)

Well, you just need to be a more advanced user that's all. The MacBook Air is about 4 years ahead of everyone and even about 1 year ahead of many Mac users. It's how ALL laptops will work in 10 years, since it's using fast wireless for most everything. It doesn't saddle you down with obsolete CD disks or DVDs. All that is now wireless in the Mac world but I agree it will take Windows users awhile to figure it out.

1) Vaios can't run OSX, so by default can't compete.
2) TZ has poor battery life and doesn't run OSX.

apple does an amazing job packaging their products. everything is placed neatly in the box without anything being broke. my dell laptop came to me with a pre-broken monitor, and dell gave me trouble trying to return it because of some guy in india thought i intentionally broke it. i bought an hp desktop and apple notebook for college since then, and i love the apple. i use it for my graphic design class, since most animated movies are made with macs. steve jobs is a genius.

Yes, technically, Macs are quite a bit more powerful than Windows. They are full blown UNIX boxes with far more customizability and software selection than Windows has to offer. Plus OSX is more battle tested than Windows could ever hope to be in business situations, so it's the machine to have if you are a power user.

If you want something that's portable, the air is actually heavier than the macbook original. And I still think that it's a piece of shit because way too much was compromised for design in this computer. I'm sure that everyone wants to carry around a disc drive with their $2000.00 computers!

Business professionals who work for a medium to large size company will never use these. First of all, it costs way to much for what it is. Second, while you may not need an optical drive, most business professionals do as swapping files via USB stick is cost prohibitive. Third, there are many new laptops, that while not as thin, although close, weigh about the same as the Air. I can't see any reason why the Air will supplant the ThinkPad as the businessman's laptop of choice.

Yeah, I don't see the company buying them for workers. But if the office or whatever runs macs, workers usually like to have a second computer for travel. This is for personal preference. And here's another thing to think about: It has mac os x on it. It isn't a thinkpad, so you expect high quality. (Not to mention the ability to run windows if you need to.)

Try putting a cd drive into something that small for less money with the same features and then complain. Nobody is forcing you to buy it are they? It's made for someone who's always on the move who just needs a small light notebook to organise all their tasks and keep on touch with people. The majority of people will most likely have another system with an optical drive anyway so if they want to install something with it then they can.

just because it's soo thin dosnt mean it can proform better than an ordinary laptop. take this into consideration: looks may be diceiving.
but dont get me wrong, the mac book can have various qualities, it's nice, thin, it also might be capable, to have the same proformance as an ordinary laptop, but it would be more expencive, but the chances of it running well are highly low.. BUT IT'S STILL A GREAT SYSTEM.. I GIVE IT A 8 OUT OF 10
