to inpinkieponkie (9months ago) Very few people attend musical theater to worry about the scenic design abberations. Did you get the message of this wondrous production or not? If not, your soul suffered a great loss - maybe it's time to go check on a lightbulb....cause there certainly is not one over YOUR head.
I really like the final moment between Father and Caolhouse before the latter steps outside. It shows a great change of character in Father--moments before he was somewhat against the whole ordeal IIRC, but here he actually expresses compassion and even horror after the gunfire begins. His "NO!" is very telling of that.
Amazing performance! This song needs a very strong voice, and both the power and control are fantastic. The wonderful acting on top of that makes it even more convincing. The reprise music before and after Coalhouse opens the doors gets me every time.
Major kudos on the singing. You're one of those people that make me wish I had an ounce of singing talent. And the end gave me chills with the gunshots and when the lights went out! Bravo!
@RAGETME2000 I am a white male. I am a racist. As someone who has had his wife drag him to the theater for well over 30 years, I can tell you that the black singers will bring the audience to its feet, and they will blow the roof off of the theater. There is no comparison. Look at range, tonality, emotion; the black singers are superior to anyone else on the stage.

Don't forget that what one sees on a stage is a collaboration between the actors and the director. Most of the critiques here fall on the director's final choices, rather than the actors' or the playwright's. The stage picture, the actor's movements and interactions, even the words chosen for emphasis, all of these are elements the director should have thought about more carefully. The actor sings and projects very well. The cast here are capable people under passable direction.
No. it doesn't work like that! It's not like "play yourself". Cause most of us know we aren't that good to do so. But those who think they can, but sounds awful anyway, shouldn't be on stage.
If that is the case...It's normal to be critisized. These are professionals. If it ain't good, it ain't good.
What you see here is okay, but not that extraordinary and special.
I love how people give bad opinions on things and are so critical of performances - quit your bitching and go in a play yourself then guys if you're so awesome. Opinions are like assholes = everyone has one. Stfu
Hi, I was in the orchestra for the Toronto premiere and first run ( and cast recording ) of the production, with B. S. Mitchell et al before Broadway, and I can honestly say that the cast were some of the nicest actors I've ever met. This is not the greatest musical ever written, and that role would be tough to pull off well even once...Good job, Coalhouse!
Hi, I was in the orchestra for the Toronto premiere and first run of the production ( and cast recording ), with B. S. Mitchell et al before Broadway, and I can honestly say that the cast were some of the nicest actors I've ever met. Good job, Coalhouse! It's not the greatest musical ever written, and that's a hard role to make believable, even once!
i thought he had a solid voice, but his actions didn't match how he was singing. also, there were times i felt he swallowed his words instead of singing with intention. it's really hard to articulate what i mean.
i totally agree with you...his voice was great, but his actions were basically all putting his hand on another guys shoulder. While there's nothing wrong with that, there probably should have been other things as well. Otherwise I really like this performance.
@deathpuppet16 actually, thats all the action he would need. What he is basically doing is trying to convince the others to continue fighting, instead of just quitting after a few lost battles. "I would not put down my sword when Justice was my right." Prime example of what I just said.
I remember singing this in chorus; I absolutely love this song! Ohh and that line "Will justice be demanded by ten million righteous men" gets me every time.
I am singing the first part" go out and tell our story let it echo far and wide" for my school concert ! i was choosen out of 45 other girls...p.s. my school is pretty small
I felt like it was more spoken than sung. Such as the accents on words like "out" " wide" "JUSTICE". It seems odd and would have sounded wonderful if it'd been sung not spoken with vigor.
I have to disagree with you on this one. I think he did it very much the way it's meant to be. It's a message delivered, not a sing-songy verse. It's not pretty, but gritty, and the spoken sound is a positive.
Great singing, but that man was stiff---verrryyy stiff. At several different points, he could have grabbed a man's shoulder, shaken his own fist, even shaken his head! I mean, c'mon he was wanting to be heard; he was wanting his children to be heard; he was wanted his PEOPLE to be heard, but how could a deaf man recognize that from his moving? Honestly, this guy would have given an EXCELLENT performance, if he had shown deep emotion in his physical performance.
I like this song, but this interpretation was not so good because your placement was not in one place. You kept lsipping into a pop voice and were not really committed to a musical theatre interpretation.
I was in this production, and the arrangement is the exact one from the Broadway show. Ours was the first production of Ragtime in New York City since it had closed.
