  • God I bawled at this song!

  • Im Singing this in Choir :D :D

  • This was recorded with a potato.

  • Haha when I saw this when I was 5 I actually thought that coalhouse was dead :) screamed like nuts.

  • lol great now i am going to have to put a video me singing this too xD

  • to inpinkieponkie (9months ago) Very few people attend musical theater to worry about the scenic design abberations. Did you get the message of this wondrous production or not? If not, your soul suffered a great loss - maybe it's time to go check on a lightbulb....cause there certainly is not one over YOUR head.

  • I really like the final moment between Father and Caolhouse before the latter steps outside. It shows a great change of character in Father--moments before he was somewhat against the whole ordeal IIRC, but here he actually expresses compassion and even horror after the gunfire begins. His "NO!" is very telling of that.

  • That was pretty good

  • Oh my god! You are absolutely amazing! I LOVE this song!!!!!!!

  • Am I the only one slightly distracted by the tacky projections? Come on Mr. Scenic Designer...

  • love this song!

  • This is truly a beautiful song!!

  • Amazing performance! This song needs a very strong voice, and both the power and control are fantastic. The wonderful acting on top of that makes it even more convincing. The reprise music before and after Coalhouse opens the doors gets me every time.

  • No one can touch Brian Stokes Mitchell's version

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!!

  • IM DOIN THIZ FOR CHORUS!

  • that was a pretty awful rendition a really good one is /watch?v=cq2X4-Sbu0g&feature=fvw

  • Major kudos on the singing. You're one of those people that make me wish I had an ounce of singing talent. And the end gave me chills with the gunshots and when the lights went out! Bravo!

  • Walked out on this one.

More whiningand propaganda about the evil whites.

    Sick of it.

  • damn, i did not knew that black people can sing, i mean HIGH vocal sing. I thought they always do hip hop and rap hahah...thats cool..

  • @Nomak020186 u r a stupid idot why would u say something like that iam black and black people can sing all kinds of ways

  • @RAGETME2000 I am a white male. I am a racist. As someone who has had his wife drag him to the theater for well over 30 years, I can tell you that the black singers will bring the audience to its feet, and they will blow the roof off of the theater. There is no comparison. Look at range, tonality, emotion; the black singers are superior to anyone else on the stage.

  • @Nomak020186 seriously -_-

  • we just did this song for chorus fest and it was my fav song we did and you did that perfectly!! =) i was really impressed!! =)

  • doing this tonight! wish us luck!

  • Don't forget that what one sees on a stage is a collaboration between the actors and the director. Most of the critiques here fall on the director's final choices, rather than the actors' or the playwright's. The stage picture, the actor's movements and interactions, even the words chosen for emphasis, all of these are elements the director should have thought about more carefully. The actor sings and projects very well. The cast here are capable people under passable direction.

  • No. it doesn't work like that! It's not like "play yourself". Cause most of us know we aren't that good to do so. But those who think they can, but sounds awful anyway, shouldn't be on stage.

If that is the case...It's normal to be critisized. These are professionals. If it ain't good, it ain't good.

What you see here is okay, but not that extraordinary and special.

  • I love how people give bad opinions on things and are so critical of performances - quit your bitching and go in a play yourself then guys if you're so awesome. Opinions are like assholes = everyone has one. Stfu

  • this is so awful....does this not look completely forced and not genuine???

  • The only thing that matters in being on key and hearing the words, nothing els can move you

  • Hi, I was in the orchestra for the Toronto premiere and first run ( and cast recording ) of the production, with B. S. Mitchell et al before Broadway, and I can honestly say that the cast were some of the nicest actors I've ever met. This is not the greatest musical ever written, and that role would be tough to pull off well even once...Good job, Coalhouse!

It's not the greatest musical ever written, and that's a hard role to make believable, even once!

  • What is going on is the climatic finish. Great song.

  • Man we did this in chorus last year. Great song 8D Great performance too~

  • What is going on in this scene?

  • make them hear you.i remeber this.singing it in choir.will justice be demanded by ten million righteous men.haha.=]]

  • i thought he had a solid voice, but his actions didn't match how he was singing. also, there were times i felt he swallowed his words instead of singing with intention. it's really hard to articulate what i mean.

  • i totally agree with you...his voice was great, but his actions were basically all putting his hand on another guys shoulder. While there's nothing wrong with that, there probably should have been other things as well. Otherwise I really like this performance.

  • @deathpuppet16 actually, thats all the action he would need. What he is basically doing is trying to convince the others to continue fighting, instead of just quitting after a few lost battles. "I would not put down my sword when Justice was my right." Prime example of what I just said.

  • I remember singing this in chorus; I absolutely love this song! Ohh and that line "Will justice be demanded by ten million righteous men" gets me every time.

  • My favorite part in the whole entire show!

  • Very nice clip. Those saying he's flat or whatever - cool, get up and do better!

  • This is very good. I don't think you're better than Brain Stokes Mitchell but you're still very good.

  • I am singing the first part" go out and tell our story let it echo far and wide" for my school concert ! i was choosen out of 45 other girls...p.s. my school is pretty small

  • Bleh! Totally mediocre, this might be how its written but this song is much better when its sung with gusto. Its too passionate to just speak.

  • I felt like it was more spoken than sung. Such as the accents on words like "out" " wide" "JUSTICE". It seems odd and would have sounded wonderful if it'd been sung not spoken with vigor.

  • I have to disagree with you on this one. I think he did it very much the way it's meant to be. It's a message delivered, not a sing-songy verse. It's not pretty, but gritty, and the spoken sound is a positive.

  • You do this song better than Brian Stokes Mitchell.

Sorry, hardcore fans. It's just how I feel.

  • Wow, I love your honesty cause I can't hear the version on PBS with Stokes and be seriously moved by the vigor and sincerity

  • what a beautiful voice!

  • he did a fantastic job, not one flaw about his singing ... abosolutely amazing

  • Love it, I love the story as well

  • love this song, also great how you kept the ending going.

  • Great singing, but that man was stiff---verrryyy stiff. At several different points, he could have grabbed a man's shoulder, shaken his own fist, even shaken his head! I mean, c'mon he was wanting to be heard; he was wanting his children to be heard; he was wanted his PEOPLE to be heard, but how could a deaf man recognize that from his moving? Honestly, this guy would have given an EXCELLENT performance, if he had shown deep emotion in his physical performance.

  • excellent... when he's not flat.

  • I simply adore this song. It makes me cry. So powerful...

  • I like this song, but this interpretation was not so good because your placement was not in one place. You kept lsipping into a pop voice and were not really committed to a musical theatre interpretation.

  • Beautiful song. There's really nothing else to be said.

  • I was in this production, and the arrangement is the exact one from the Broadway show. Ours was the first production of Ragtime in New York City since it had closed.

Dwayne, you're wonderful! I miss SVE and this was by far one of the best productions I had the pleasure of being a part. <3, julia

  • I'm used to hearing this song in a slightly different arrangement, but I really enjoyed this version with it building up.

  • Wow. Gave me goosebumps.

    Awesome Performance.

  • im def crying. oh, theres only two songs in the world that make me cry and this is one of them. it was amzing.

  • great performance my friend!

    Just wonderful!

    got me tearing up.

  • wonderfull singing, brought tears to my eyes.thanks for posting.

  • Wow. Really really well done.

  • strong and commanding, just the way the song should be sung. Bravo

  • wow what a talented actor!

the lighting at the end was also really good.

    very moving.

  • I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE Ragtime.

    great performance.

  • I saw the movie and read the book--and was very moved by the story. I wish that I had seen the musical too. It looks fantastic.

  • still amazing!

  • One of the best ever.

  • One of the best ever.

  • great job omg!

  • One of the best ever.

  • were singing this for a school concert

its so much fun to sing in parts

    great job

  • Incredible

  • this is the best one I have seen

  • AWSOME JOB! I'm impressed!

We're doing this song for my sping concert this year, but I think you've got us beat, big time.

  • I've never seen the show before so I was kinda confused. Is that Father or Younger brother that Coalhouse is alone with at the end?

  • That would be Father

  • I love this song, I did it in a theatre camp haha

    gooooood job :)

  • In hindsight, our embrace was pretty homosexual.

  • It was BROTHERLY dammit!

  • @johnnybway Get over yourself, Johnny B'way....scared to go there?

  • I love this song so much.

  • Your voice is LOVELY!! Wow! I adore this song!

  • i love this song this is one of the songs were doin for state

  • Well just to get this out of the way: You're not as good as Brian Stokes Mitchell, but i think that's impossible, and you're the best i've heard besides him. congrats, you are amazing

  • Agree. But very good. You're one of the best I've heard as well. Good job

  • so where did you do that production?

  • Wow. You're freaking awesome. I know I've got nothing on you, but could you give me some feedback on mine. I don't have any accompanament on mine, but I would really apprciate a comment. Great job.

  • wow... i have final callbacks for this show tomorrow ( im going for emma goldman) and just wow. just. wow. amazing

  • Could Brian Stokes Mitchell hae competition as our favorite Coalhouse Walker? I think so. Wonderful job man...wonderful job!!

The community theatre that I am with is currently in rehearsals for Ragtime and I will be playing Little Brother.

  • True, but Tateh's accent's annoying. Do you take voice lessons?

  • That was absolutely gorgeous.. I cried..

My high school is opening this show on Thursday..

You were absolutely amazing.. I swear.

    Best of luck to you.

  • Wow, that was truly amazing- great work. I love Ragtime- especially Coalhouse. But sadly I can't play him *sigh* Guess I'll have to stick with Tateh... Damn. But seriously- great job, you're a fantastic singer and actor. Ten out of ten.

  • Thanks my man, and Tateh is a great role! At least he gets to live AND get the girl!

  • FAN-FRIKEN-TASTIC! should have held the last note for 4seconds longer but seriously I would have stood up after that.

Chills... chills. I played Henry Houdini and Willie Conklin in the 10th Anniversary production up here in Toronto Last year. Very good job.

  • LOL...you know, I always thought I should have held that note longer, I just ran out of gas because of the "I'll be near you" before it. Thanks for the comment my man!

  • Hey Dwayne, I was truly hesitant about listening to this song by anyone but BSM but you made my so glad because is this the most amazing song but you did it justice and I a black man I was moved. Excellent

  • Holy crap! Believe me when I say that I am grateful by what you and others have had to say about this video. To even be mentioned in the same sentence as "Stokes" has definitely made my day. Thank you so much

  • omg. wow. "i'll be near you again" gave me CHILLS. you are incredible.

  • Really? Wow, I'm truly humbled by that comment, thank you

  • you're very welcome. keep up the good work. i'm inspired by your rendition of that. Amazing, my friend.

  • Beautiful rendition of one of the great dramatic and musical moments of contemporary Broadway.

  • Thanks for the kind words my friend, but I will always give credit to the amazing cast that I got the opprotunity to work with for making this show what it was.

  • where was this?

  • WOW! you're amazing! Its so moving and emotional ad your voice is perfect for this part! Fantastic job!

  • WOW! you're fantastic! It's so emotional and your voice is amazing! I would have gotten this solo but my teacher made it an octet instead which i think is rediculous. Fantastic job

  • Great! Great! Dwayne, No other could have done it better. Continue reaching for the Stars. We are so proud of you.

  • do you have He Wanted To Say? if you do can you please please upload it???? i LOOOOOOVVVE that song!!
