Depends on what rap you're listening.For example I don't like most rap singers because they have the same repeated message and they're not even unique.I listen to a band from my country called "Parazitii"(=parasites) who have messages which resemble very much with rock, punk rock message like man vs system.They even said if they didn't rap they would have formed a rock band.

My point is that it's not the genre that should bother you, but the singer and what he has to tell you.
