  • For those 24 people who clicked "dislike" on this video: You're just jealous that he's 10 times the drummer that you are!

  • 0:30 totally french face

  • @leothedrawer3 why that look french ?

  • Apparently Romain means God in French.

  • Nice polyrhythms!!!!!!

  • @joeschmojo yea better remove that comment trololololol

  • @joeschmojo I always thought an Irish person would try not to make people stereotype them.

  • @joeschmojo Well I guess if you were really drunk you might decide to be gay for a while......

  • @joeschmojo you officially suck

  • @joeschmojo

    maybe footwork?

  • Comment removed

  • @joeschmojo whats better about dennis chambers?

  • Neil Peart-ish solo

  • This guy is amazing! but it looks like there's he's smelling something bad in the when he's playing, LOL

  • Goulon is one of the best metal drummers ever!!

  • Oh my shit! This is amazing

  • /watch?v=9fi-RGICcNM&feature=related in this video.. like in the middle of it.. he says that he was influenced by dave weckl.. that explains where this groove he has come from

  • Listen to Dave Weckl solo...then talk to me about Goulon's jazz sensibility.

  • is he started Bleed at 1:45? O.O

  • @Arphanel this take is from 07. Obzen album came out in 08 ;) so it wasnt bleed

  • @froddds ahh good notice

  • wheres the groove?

  • fucking crazy how some of these guys are so good with both hands. Thats my problem, I can't do shit with my left hand. I held the stick improperly for 10 years and gained strength gained.

  • 1:59... he is PISSED at that cymbal.

  • hooray for bleed at 1:44

  • haha look at his face:D:D

    ur awesome

  • @TrSYeTi navi?

  • he looks like hes chewing tobacco

  • my drummer beats yours, my god beats yours, my dad beats yours, etc, etc...

  • 1:21 ... Love it. The cymbal work sounds so awesome.

  • THANK YOU, a metal drummer who actually studied jazz, and not some gay core drummer who only knows how to play a breakdown and a fast single stroke roll

  • @pinheadpizza Generally most drummers learn jazz style drumming, whether or not it is what they normally play.

  • @pinheadpizza Have you listened to Necrophagist? They set fire to core bands and piss them out, only to shit on them.

  • @pinheadpizza HURRAY FOR JAZZ MUSIC!!

  • @pinheadpizza uh have you actually listened to necrophagist? theres definitely alot more than breakdowns and single stroke rolls as you so blatantly put it. study their music more you infant.

  • @ShadowOfAhriman i actually have listened to necrophagist and i was referring to core drummers, not this guy thank you very much. this guy is insane

  • @pinheadpizza lol oh okay sorry man, took your comment way wrong i apologize

  • @ShadowOfAhriman dont worry about it; it happens to me all the time lol

  • @pinheadpizza Actually, a lot of drummers in this type of metal have a background in jazz. Either way, it's definitely refreshing.

  • @ptc5010 this i agree, but core i dont think so

  • @pinheadpizza lots of death metal drummers are surprisingly well educated.

  • @densendoku at least the really good ones like george kollias and derek roddy. but i was mainly referring to core drummers, because most of them suck haha

  • @pinheadpizza I'd like to be that kind of metal drummer. I don't play breakdowns to play juts blast beats and call it metal... Yet the only way to learn/study jazz is to listen to it, but i never listen to it or find it to my tastes... is this still aceptable?

  • @pinheadpizza dude... kai hahto... fleshgod apocalypse's drummer aswell..

  • @pinheadpizza Exactly how i feel !!

  • really really really good technique!

  • looks like he's got a fat dip in his lip

  • Never ceases to fascinate me how the best death metal drummers always sound like jazz masters when soloing. Im sure its no coincendence. I love both styles!

  • is it just me, or does it look like hes sitting at an unusual distance from his set, normally my snare is just about ball tapping me...it looks like he could spit on the shell from where he's sitting haha

  • @Mistamoriarty the further away from the set you are the more leverage you have on the pedals. i assume it suits his playing style to be able to have a lot of ankle motion is all. i like sitting a ways back from the kit too, but maybe not this far.

  • his drumming is just as extreme as his facial expression, :D

  • i wish this shit was somewhat more synced?

  • @str8organic38mm it is synced, its not the camera, hes just that good,

  • @TrashMetal25 aha ye cuz at some points its just like wuthehell just happend

  • Romain is such a sick drummer!!!!!

  • Yo sick druming skills....howd ya get ur snare to sound like tht

  • @hackerguy227 most metal snares sound like that, (assuming his is metal), but then again if you have a maple or birch snare you may be able to find a way to tune it to get that little ring his snare has.

  • Okay okay...I need to post a comment, too....

I really love your drumming! May I ask which Douple Pedal you're playing, by the way ? - just interested

...I'm trying "your" 2 Doublebass Techniques as well as the Heel Toe Technique at the moment...love it!

It's a pretty nice and easy way to improve speed and feeling at the same time!

    later.

  • talk about perfection....

  • i mustve missed the groove part

  • @noseriouslywhatsup Because you're an idiot.

  • 1:21 - 1:30 Reminds me of Mortal Kombat..

  • HOLY CRAP 1:44 Is fucking sic. HA just like the other 214 secs.

  • @DeathMetalinfedel sounds alot like Bleed - Meshuggah

  • YEP it just shows you have to learn from this guys.. very good shanewhite666

  • YEP it just shows you have to learn from this guys.. very goop shanewhite666

  • WOW

i think hes one of the few metal drummers who can play awesome jazz with big feeling and fuckin fast metal.

while this, his playin ultra exact ,every beat fits.

havent seen such a good drummer in a long time

    \m/

  • The guys who don't like it may be in love for shakira !

  • my life dream is to meet romain goulon. he is my idol. please if anyone can help meet him that would be amazing. (:

  • hes amazing. rather listen to him w the whole band though

  • sick groove at 1:10

  • he has no chin. and he tries to hide it with his face hair.

  • @inthecommonmind if it's not there, how is he hiding it?

  • @jake20589 hes amazing.. he can hide nothing he's that good :)

  • This is nice. Maybe not among the best, but its got a rhythm... unlike the derek roddies, chad smithies, lars urchins, who cant understand the difference between a drumset and Kitchenware.

  • amazing

  • I love that he plays bleed for a bit at 1:46, just for fun hahaha

  • 2:12 fucking craziest groove ever.

  • He's not playing jazz, I'm just saying he probably has studied it, like any other drummer that is worth a shit

  • veeery good cazzo

  • IS HE FRENCH RIGHT???

  • @sliprok100 yes :(

  • @jewfishie2 why frownie face?

  • @Rilonator666 because he is french..

how is that not saddening that one of the if not the best metal drummer is from france?

  • @jewfishie2 He could be from the moon and it would not make a difference. This guy is out of this world.

  • @fucknuaf oh i would be fine with him being from the moon

    or virtually anywere

    except france

    i mean..

    come on..

    france???

    really?

  • 1:46 oO sick !

  • some great funk at some parts.. keepin up that clean syncopation makes a great drummer

  • C'est quoi le nom de tes china, vraiment bon

  • @screamjyser if you think this is reminiscent of jazz music, you don't know anything about jazz drumming. Look up dave weckl, and tell me that the styles arent similar.

  • @GingersFTW lol he probably thinks that just because it isn't in a four block or straight eight form it must be jazz.

  • just cos you turned the snares off doesn't meant its not metal

  • 1:46 Bleed by meshuggah?

  • This could well be the best drummer in the world. If not now ... then in a couple of years. Thomas Lang, Jojo Mayer, Dave W, Johnny Rabb ... watch out!

  • Awsome!

  • • Toda Una Institución.....

  • this isnt bad drumming, it's just about the furthest thing away from a "groove solo" you can get. I dont think this guy knows how to play more than one volume.

also, jazz and metal not so diffrent? thats suuuuper super ignorant. in no way, other than speed, are the two drumming styles even close to being a little bit similar.

  • Romain is probably the best death metal drummer of all time, but this video is so laughable. Stick to metal, Mr. Goulon.

  • @BL4CKW4T3RP4RK George Kollias is the best death metal of all time -.- but Romain is nuts he too :)

  • @sick898 I prefer derek roddy more than george kollias.

  • love it!

  • 1:49 - Bleed meshuggah rhythm

  • Nice drummer.

  • for the record...Romain Goulon was able to replace a drum machine for Necrophagist at the age of 19...that's pretty much the same as Squire Arthur pulling the sword from the stone to become king of England.

This kid is gifted with technical precision the likes of which career snipers are even left in envy...IF YOU DENY THIS SIMPLY RESPOND WITH A VIDEO OF YOUR SUPERIOR DRUMMING. if you can't manage that, have fun with your limp and deflated ego...

  • EPIC

  • Serious choppage

  • just so you guys know. i taught this guy EVERYTHING HE KNOWS! not.

  • tell you guys what instead of bitching and posting silly comments about "whos the best" or weather a drummer is good or not, why dont you face the facts and realise that these drummers are all very good at what they do and all influence people in some way. The REV was an awesome drummer with alot of talent for his age and the same goes for Romain so all the time youve been wasting trying to argue the point you could have been catching up with them and becoming an inspiration youself!!

  • @shanewhite666

I couldn't of said this better.

  • @shanewhite666 the rev is dead im happy he was a shit drummer,

  • @shanewhite666 The word you're looking for is precocious.

  • oh yes . i think he is a jazz drummer .

  • he sure is uggly

  • @Superchocolatedonut so this dude has some amazing skills and ur more interested that he is ugly, fuck

  • @Superchocolatedonut well take it as a good thing gotta complain at something

  • He is such a good drummer, it makes me wana cry :'D haha he's such a beast drummer

  • thats so grooven man

  • Thank you, this is awesome to see.!

Good to see some semi improv stuff from a metal drummer you know?

  • ye..this pick is very jazzy which is good. and this bastard was just born inside a pick of drums. he's fokn awesome!!.

  • it looks as if this style of drums is testing him more than on him metal drum solos (which are sick) judging by his facial expressions. Hes absolutely brilliant all the same

  • Jazz nd metal arent all that different, I bet you anything this guy was trained in jazz when he was younger.

  • @infantdrugmule indeed

  • @infantdrugmule I've heard if you want to become a great metal drummer, start with jazz druming because it teaches you fast movements with excellent rytheme. And everyone knows, don't mess with a jazz drummer, he will win.

  • For sure! I mean, if you are a serious drummer you shouldn't approach something like metal until you have studied some or are studying jazz in my opinion. After all, the same rudiments apply to whatever style you are trying to play, drumming is drumming and musical styles comes second to that.

  • @infantdrugmule i dis agree with the not that different part, but this guy can play both and jhe mixes them which is siick. and yes i agree he was probably a jazz drummer when he was younger

  • @infantdrugmule lol the drumming at least

  • @infantdrugmule

    Most likely

  • @infantdrugmule it is wayyy different...

  • @infantdrugmule Lol if u think this is jazz obviously you've never really listened to the music.

  • @infantdrugmule true..even tho the 2 genres are worlds apart, the drumming however is very close..very technical stuff and creative beats

  • @RockTheGABE most metal techniques come from jazz. Blasting, kicks, accents etc. just much more agressive.

  • @infantdrugmule most metal drumers of today were :)

  • @infantdrugmule children of bodom drummer studied jazz. as did their keyboardist

  • @infantdrugmule Necrophagist play in Hungarian Minor, especially with their solo's, this is a jazz scale my friend ;), most sophisticated metal bands have sophisticated roots and experience.

  • @infantdrugmule They are about as different as they could possibly be...this groove is not played with any swing at all - it's a straight up rock solo....he has great technique for both hands and feet but this doesn't show me any jazz feel.

  • @metalmike83 wow, finally someone with a bit of sense. the things people think is jazz these days...

  • @infantdrugmule Finally a smart dude. I mean I NEVER listen to jazz but without it we wouldn't have half the music we have today.

  • lol all these pple hatin on romain's skills. drumming isnt ALL about skillz pple, its about wat you want your drumming to sound like. and if you like it thts all tht should really matter. nah mean? so go saying all these other drummers name and compare. cuz im sure romain doesnt give a shit cuz hes makin money. lol

  • so dont go sayin*

  • LOL @ 1:57 Extreme expressions

  • rediculous good love the double double beat witht he off beats

  • i think the issue everyone is having is the complete disparity in style between extreme metal drumming and everything else - the fills and the type of "groove" are just so against jazz and its progression there's no point in comparing - these drummers are just such a different breed - ...et Goulon est français ou québécois ou quoi?

  • il est du sud de la France.

agreed with you about jazz drumming and this. Extreme metal is such a different playing and sound. But I'm currently studying in a jazz school where some drummers (well, one actually, for what I know) can play both styles very nice.

  • il est français ;)

  • dude, fucking incredible man.

  • he's not a bad drummer at all, and his stylistics in necrophagist are pretty sweet. but there will always be a soft spot in my heart for flo mounier of cryptopsy

  • the drumming school of Hoglan really isn't that much different than Romain's. Hoglan has more experience and is more accomplished but the style is pretty much the same. way to jump on the romain hate bandwagon.

  • Good, but I ain't feeling it.

  • this dude is badd ass, but i think Marco minnemann is 5 times better shit maybe 10 times better

  • @zackcarnes i think romain has a much better feel for playing metal than minnemann... not saying he's a better overall drummer... but he's definately better at playing extreme metal... i saw necrophagist with marco, hannes, and romain... romain put them all to shame in my book...

  • This is a real drummer. He is one of the best. Everyones claiming the Rev from avenge seven fold was the best cos he died and I'm just like listen to some Necrophagist, rev aint got nothing on Romain

  • They may be completly diffrent styled drummers but what Romain plays is much more skillfull and harder to play. Which makes him a better drummer. Im like 100% sure that Romain can play any song written by the Rev.

Also what am I mean't to compare other the skill level when there two completly diffrent drummers who write completly diffrent things?

The only reason I said this is because there are faggotty emo kinds saying how amazing the Rev was just cos he died. Stop being a cocky little twat.

  • I agree. You don't become a great drummer after you die, you earn it in life. Vitek, anybody? :P

  • RIP VITEK man, excellent drummer

  • @theblokebloke I would say, people that say that arn't actual drummers. Rev was a great drummer but ofcourse not the best.

    RIP Rev.

  • @Siph3nX The rev was a standard drummer, who could of been replaced within half an hour of his death. That may sound extremly harsh but its true. He was good for the genre he played but he in no way influenced the drumming community in any way.

  • @theblokebloke you can't compare Romain and The Rev =) i love the Rev, and not since he is dead. Romain have a completely other style.

  • @theblokebloke wat abt george kolias??

  • @theblokebloke I think they're both good

Because they can both groove like mother fuckers

And I personally think they're both amazing drummers and are even

Ever heard Tension by Avenged Sevenfold

    So much groove in there

You can't touch The Rev. in that song

  • @DrumsnotDrugz Something tells me that Romain could. And Derik Roddy, Chris Adler, Thomas Pidgen, and JAson Bittner.

  • @theblokebloke Not forgetting Kai Hahto and George Kollias ;)

  • @theblokebloke this dude got skills but i dont think he got feel into it. avenged sevenfold drummer.... is. .uh. .not...that.. good LOL

  • @theblokebloke Dumbass, speed =/= skill. The rev was good because of his technique, and how he executed it. This guy hits a buncha drums really fast. That's it.

  • @Omegist The fact you said he "hits a buncha drums really fast" just made you our a opinion invalid cos you clearly don't know drums. I bet you think that Joey Jordison is good.

  • @Omegist Speed actually does equal skill, if you can keep a good beat at the same time =) and you try doing what he does this fast!

  • @Omegist theres not much you can say to recover from that comment is there, come on.. if you "listen" to what hes playing you will be amazed.

  • @Omegist romain takes a large shit on the rev. sure the rev was good but i do not understand why people think he is the almighty god of drums. im glad mike portnoy is helping out A7X because that band needs all the help it can get to keep from sucking.

  • @Omegist kill yourself.

  • @theblokebloke cuz it makes perfect sense to compare two drummers who dont even play the same kind of music.

  • @Cboisen10 It does. Cos i can look at a drum piece like this and go "hmm thats very skillfull. He used this this and this technique thats very hard." Then look at a piece by any other drummer and say " Hmm, Well he didn't play that fast but he used this and this technique, where as the other one used this technique." There for from that i can conclude that the first drummer is the better.

  • @theblokebloke

I hear what your saying, the rev was great, but far from the best.

Romain is kinda tied with Peart and Portnoy for myfavorite drummer.
