This version is very very different from the finished version. I like this arrangement better...but as I type this I realize I'm arguing with ERIC CLAPTON. :P
This is from the Crossroads box set, released in 1988. This track would have appeared on their second album, but it was never to see the light of day. The reason there aren't any lyrics on the chorus is because the track is still unfinished.
His expertise with the wah pedal is exquisite. The reason not many people can adequately use the wah pedal these days is because they don't take a hint from Eric or Jimi.
There are two live versions of "Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad" on the double CD live at Fillmore and both of them have a completely different beginning but amazingly funky on each.
@catchthemudshark I think this is unfinished, and they were going to add the "got to get better in a little while" backing vocals that they did in concert, but the band broke up before they could do final overdubs. That's my theory, anyway.
@Exilemainstreet yes, it was intended for the 2nd studio album of Derek, etal. Also there are others out there that were slated for the 2nd album......."Evil", "Roll It Over", "One More Chance", "Mean Old Frisco", "Snake Lake Blues" and maybe one or two more
@Exilemainstreet it's a good theory and probably correct. It is not a finished studio product. but, what's there sounds damn good. Ever notice that on the first D&D studio double lp Layla &b Other Assorted Lovesongs has very litle if any wah-wah on it. The recordings that were going to be on the second album were almost all wah-wah.
@cooltooth112 You're speaking my language, cooltooth! I've actually had conversations with friends about how I think Clapton played differently (and better) on the aborted second Dominos record, and specifically, that he was playing wah wah a lot. I would have LOVED to have heard a second Dominos studio record. It was one of rock's great losses that they broke up so soon.
Yeah! eric clapton at his best. Terrific wha-wha licks and great picking. Sometimes one can hear echoes of Chuck Berry. I don't think it was brownie "singing" here. Maybe it was a Les Paul. Who knows.... Eric was 26 at that time and his voice was very beautiful. So sad nobody can stop the passage of time....
@MrRcurrent Yea, Jim literally drummed his mother to death, so tragic to throw away your life like that. But, the state decided he was not responsible for mother's murder as he was a paranoid schizophrenic with extreme psychosis. In other words he probably was thinking that his mother was out to kill him. Well, odds are he will spend the rest of his life in the mental prison, which is worse than a regular prison.
The bassline is simple but speaks volumes. I like it best without choruses.

Great version, nonetheless.

any idea why the title lyrics are not sung in the studio version as they are in the Live at the Fillmore version? Have always found this a bit odd...

@catchthemudshark it's because the band broke up before they finished tracking all the vocal tracks.
