@Sekhurity: I attended this race from 1977-1985. From 1976-1983 it was F1. Then they changed to CART/Indy Cars from 1984-present. There was never "electric wires all around". This track was/is safer than Monaco. The reason they changed from F1 to CART/Indy Cars was due to financial reasons. F1 was too expensive to bring to Long Beach because back then F1 made the promoter/host city pay all traveling expenses for the teams. CART/Indy Cars were based in the USA, so expenses were far less.
@Bresoto Electric wires all around. Tracks barriers wouldn't help at all if the cars would've crashed. Watch "Grand Prix: The Killer Years" Documentary and you'll understand it..
Watching F1 from this era makes me so happy. Such awesome amounts of fearless driving, especially knowing that a single mistake would be fatal. The 70's were amazing for F1, a lot of experimental moves especially from Tyrrell. Depailler had the hands and the mind in the right place at the right time. Great driver!

190 mph on the straight. I wonder if even todays best sports bikes can keep up with Patrick on this track with concrete everywhere.

Fantastic driver. One of my favorites. Those onboards from Patrick Depailler reminds me of Gilles Villeneuve.
