Do not prune your crape myrtle this way. This guy has no clue what he his doing, though he may think he does. He is basically topping the tree. Where he got the idea to cut just below a split I don't know. Its not right... its just wrong. Poor tree. Could have been beautiful. Just because crape myrtles may be very forgiving trees, doesn't mean that whacking away the canopy is the right way to prune.
No...that is called Crepe Murder. Its also called Topping. Don't trim anything thicker than your pinkie unless you are cutting it all they way back to the trunk.
dude that is not how you trim a tree. You clearly butchered it. you chopped off all the main branches. Trimming off the sub-branches would have stimulated new growth as well, I dont see the reasoning in slaughtering a beautiful tree with great ramification.
Trimming this "aggressively" is often way too much. Check out alternative opinions that many would say are the "correct" way to trim such a pretty tree. No video but excellent info: ctchorticulture.blogspot dot com/2010/01/pruning-crape-myrtles.html Video showing much better approach: CN02Qpt5agM Another great video: xzzNaId-XjE Don't ruin your trees; please learn the "correct" way.
Whoever did this is wrong, This is not proper crepe myrtle pruining.
