in response to arguments whether JYP, Tablo, Tiffany, Jessica and many other english speaking korean celebs have accents, i think it is evident that our judgment hindes based on the celeb.

the only fair way is to compile all of them saying the same phrases, distort their voice, mix in actual "native" speakers in pile and conduct a blind test.

besides, everyone has accent! we all speak differently. some people "chew" on their words, and some people bounce their lips more. it's no big deal

I think proper grammatical usage is much more important than accent. Some people have less of a musically sensitive ear and may miss certain inflections. English is my primary language and Korean is my second language due to my being a second generation Korean American. I still have difficulty pronouncing some Korean words due to the English language lacking similar sounds. However, my grammar and syntax is more proper than most native Koreans. It is okay for non-natives to have accents.

비는 여기서 나오는 인터뷰 전체를 보면 기자의 질문을 전혀 알아듣지 못하고 헛소리만 하죠. 차라리 통역을 쓰지. 동문서답에 기자가 더 당황해 하더라는.. 보아는 더 낫지만 아직 영어권에 실제 오래살진 않아서 아직 어설프더라는.. 미국진출 초기때니까 지금은 낳아졌겠죠. 차라리 이병헌은 질문도 다 알아듣고 자기 할말도 잘 하더라는.. 공부와 실전을 모두 많이 한듯. 최고는 박진영이죠.(미국 살다온 사람 빼고) 박진영은 오래전에 무슨 프로에서 영어 써서 재수없다고 욕먹는걸 들은적 있는데 그건 그만큼 오랜 세월 영어를 준비해 왔다는걸 보여 주는거죠. 웬만한 유학생 미국서 5~7년 살은 애들보다 훨 낫다라고 봅니다.

Okay, they speak English well, but none of them would be mistaken for native speakers. All have heavy accents, although JYP would be considered fluent. From what I have heard, Tiffany & Jessica from SNSD, Tablo from Epik High, Nickhun & Taecyeon from 2pm, Brian from FTTS, among others, would be considered native. As you can see, they were all born or lived much of their lives in the states.

I agree; Koreans have an obsession with speaking English as fluently and with perfect American accent, but really with English as lingua franca, everyone speaks English with different accent, and as long as message gets across, accents shouldn't matter so much.

That's true, but it's not just American accents anymore. It's preferred, but now they're hiring from the UK, South Africa, Australia, Canada, Singapore, etc.

I don't love how they made English into the 5th major subject. It has overtaken science and social studies, the majority of elementary school textbooks are as thin as magazines. I don't think that there are that many Korean teachers that teach English though, most of them suck. They are usually good at grammar, and sometimes not even that.

My thought is, if you need someone to speak English (for business purposes, or whatnot), hire a translator. English isn't one of the legally set national languages, so why make it so important?

Clearly, ... they need to do some major revision in the curriculum to prepare these kids to take over the country, not to make them think English will get them somewhere in life.

Still, being able to speak English isn't that bad. But I think that English should be restricted to a lower subject, or to "hagwon"s. They could bring in more languages...

I don't think it's bad either, but the focus on English is a bit overrated, especially given the rather sad results compared to the effort. I disagree that it should be kept at "Hagwon' level, but do think that there are more important subjects to take into account.
