Thanks for the video! For some reason, I just couldn't find _any_ good tutorials about how to do a hollow 1-over-1-under braid with more than 4 measly strands. I had been trying to do a 12-strand by taking 6 strands and slowly spiraling them around, weaving the other 6 through the whole mess, one by one, and needing to stop every couple rotations to untangle everything. This method works _much_ better.
@osodeoz It will depend a lot on the strength of the material you are going to use. The only way to find out is to to a test plait around something and see how it works out.
i am making a nylon stock whip and i was just wondering once i finish braiding the handle if i could send the handle to you so you can make the pineapple knot
@SuperWario094 It sounds like you don't have enough strands to cover what you are plaiting around or your strands are not wide enough. To find this out multiply the diameter of your handle by 4.5. If it's 20mm that comes to 90.Divide this by the number of strands say 16 and that means that your strands have to be a bit over 5mm wide. Another way is that the total width of your strands have to cover the diameter about one and a half times.
Tyhe trick is not to plait for to long so that you plaiting gets to tangled. Before that happens you just pull all the strands out until it is all untangled and then resume.
hey bernie, all your videos are great. i could not braid anything ,watched one of your videos , now i can braid/platt 4,8,12,16 it's so easy.you are a master at your trade. thanks matt
I just tried writing it out and I think it will be easier if I put up a video. Give me a few days, I pretty busy with work, and I'll see if I can post something here.
I really love your video's and I've seen your site. Perhaps I'm not reading so well, but I was wondering... How thick is the leather you use to plait/braid? Thank you!
I don't know if I aswered this for you or not but nylon whips are quite good and very rugged. If your going to use a whip in wet conditions a nylon whip is what you want. Just be sure you get it from a reputable whip maker.
How come when you do the transition form under one over one. Why can't you just go straight to under four over four? WHy do you have to do the fancy lil transition? just wondering. Will it just fall apart?
You don't have to do the transition because it will not make any difference to the whip, just looks better. The thing is with most bull whips that is where the second knot goes so that is usually covered over by the knot anyway.
I´m pretty new with this plaiting thing, and I actually got confused at the beginning with the back part, I just don´t get how you continue it (sorry if it´s something easy)
You might want to try plaiting with less strands like 4 or 8 to start with. It would take to long to explain the whole process here but there are a lot of good books out there. Just google leather braiding and do a bit of research.
Bolster is correct. The cotton you see is just there to hold it in place while I plait over it.I have changed my method of making whips since I made that video and now only use plaited bellies so there are four plaited bellies in all my whips now. You cans see this on this page of my site em-brand-whips. insidebull.htm If you look through my site on the tutorial pages you will find a tutorial that takes you through the process using the old method.
it looks like you have cotton string around a covering (blattrer),it looks like you have enclosed the core, its not tape, just wondering what material that is?
It's me again, Harley, I've been trying to reach you on your EM whips site but the emails aren't getting through. I was trying to get a price on your friends re-sizer/beveler if he is selling them. If he is I'd like to buy one.
I just got my DVD's on whip building from you and they are outstanding! I really like the little razor blade strand cutter and edge beveler. Thanks for all your help, and you can bet I'll probably be asking for more in the future. And for anyone who wants to learn to make whips Bernie's
If yu go to my site em-brand-whips you will find a link to tutorials. Go to the bull whip tutorial and that will help you out.I'm trying to get some video posted on how to make a bull whip but I'm flat out making whips and it will be some time before I can find the time.

Nylon would be fine and much cheaper than leather as well.
Nylon is good especially for beginners because you don't have to cut any lace and it does make a very good whip. I plait all m signal whips like that. Because I make them so you can replace the crackers instead of the traditional way where the cracker is plaited into the end of the whip it makes a neater job of it so you can't really see where the nylon cracker stops and the leather begins.
Hi. I've been wanting to make my own whip for a long time. I have made a few attempts with less than par results. After watching your videos I think I am ready to make a good one, your videos are excellent! I just have one question. What is the handle and core of the whip made of and how do you get the taper correctly. I was hopeing you had a video about that too, but I haven' found one. If you could help me that would be great.

Hi Bernie! I have a question I'm hoping you can answer. On a whip with a 16-plait overlay, on the handle portion, does it use a significantly greater amount of lace to do the under-1/over-1 diamond plaiting, than it does if one were to plait the handle using the "herring bone" under-4/over-4 method? And if so, can you tell me approximately how much more would be needed? Thanks!
P.S. I've been telling people about your videos/website, & I'm wondering, exactly how do you pronounce your last name?
thanks Leo. As the whip gets thinner I drop strands into the core of the whip until at the end where the fall attaches I like to end with 8 strands. I will try and post more videos as soon as I get time showing this. Whip making is keeping me very busy at the moment.

This is probably a stupid question but how does the underside of the handle get plaited since you've been working entirely on the top side.
SuperSexySamba 2 years ago
Not a silly question at all. When plaiting in any plait the sequence is such that both the underside and top are plaited at once.

I've got one question. At the end, you go

Did you make this sequence till the thin end

when the whip goes thiner?
Thank you.
