The only Republicans who I think would've had a chance of actually winning in 08 were Paul and Giuliani. Giuliani is a more moderate Republican, so he'd attract people from both parties as well as Indies more easily. Paul is also kind of a "moderate" in his own right as a libertarian Republican. He's not a tool of the Religious Right, although is a Christian conservative. He was against the war when most Americans were also (as well as the start of it). He emphasized civil liberties.
