having had to watch these episodes with my grandparents on tv didn't do much for me as a kid..looking back now, thanks to utube, I appreciate these clips and am as entertained now as they were back then. Glad to be able to go back to these old footages. Cissy a& Bobby - great dancing!
I'm not sure which vesrion I like better. The original was awesome, especially at the accordion part of the song. But this version owns in the beginning part.
Whenever Mary Lou Metzger lipsynchs she puts on this over-the-top superficial smile that, aside from looking like it's gonna break her face, makes it totally impossible to actually sing. She was always such an airhead.
I agree, and they changed the dance routine considerably from the original, though I guess, since Bobby and Barbara had come up with the original, they wanted to try to "Cissy-ize" it, so that Cissy wasn't just aping Barbara's original steps. Its also weird that they went to the trouble to have Norma, Gail and MaryLou here, but then only had one chorus of "La-la's" at the end. Brings back fun memories, though, of Saturday night at my grandparents' house!
Wonder if Lawrence had Geritol's "iron-poor blood"? Perhaps he had "the heartbreak of psoriasis" and "nagging backache," too... (I've been watching television too long...)
I believe the Geritol sign came down when the show left ABC and went into first-run syndication in the fall of '71 (since the sponsors for syndicated shows differ according to local area). I don't remember being there throughout most of the '70s.
Let's see, two women putting fingers in their mouths making popping noises, and this dancer lifts up more skirt than she could have gotten away with in 1961.
I'm glad this vid is back too.I made the comment that as good as Bobby was,Cissy had to do everything he did,but backwards and in high heels! Great, memorable song!
I'm glad that you put this video back on YouTube. The person "funkymusic770" removed the video from YouTube and now, I'm glad that you put it back on YouTube. This is one of my favorite videos.
Thought Bobby was gay when i first saw him dance on LW....but he is not

As Lawrence would have said, "A wonerful, a wonerful!" God bless Lawrence.
As I get older he did have something going as in original "Dancing with the Stars " talent!

One thing you can say about Lawrence Welk is most of the women on that show were pretty attractive.
kerbio24 2 years ago 2
@kerbio24 they all got a facial from Mr. Welk too.

My parents watched and loved the show and his music. I think my Dad
watched so he could see Sissy King
in her Pantyhose.

Do you think that Geritol is their sponsor?
BUNGLEJYME 2 years ago 2
@BUNGLEJYME It was their sponsor for a time.
Of course, their signature sponsor was Dodge--remember Dodge Dart?

Cissy was a great replacement for Barbara Boylan , but could never match the graceful style that Barbara posessed.
Especially on Calcutta!

The 'Geritol' in the background is awful.

Back then, variety shows had individual sponsors posted prominently in the background.
