@greyandme2 Not too much - if you don't have a freewheel on your motor, and even less if you have a freewheel. @luc59457 about the clutch freewheel who you mount on the axle of motor, the rotation who that have is clockwise, so in that freewheel can be change the direction of rotation? to the opposite direction??
@FireDropTechnologies I haven't seen one that is worth my interest and I wouldn't use them on this system, it's 36v, I don't want individual batteries charging fractional rates. 3 x 30w panels would be huge.
I am thinking of making another system that will be slower, run on a gear system, run on 12vdc but high amps. It will just be for show, I recommend anyone try it, that is why I place it here. I'm using the unite for this one, Have a spare, Going to get a 100amp controller..
@FireDropTechnologies It's going to be geared for 32km/h and have loads of torque. I'll use the back trailer for 2 30w solar panels to give me around 1.6 peak. This is coming close to my charger, so 8 hours or a bit more from fully discharged. It would be nice to have a bike charge in the sun within 1 day, rather than several. Asking for sooner becomes not practical.
My friend Danny had the same type of motor on a factory built bike, with larger batter bank, Allthough his did not have the Awwsome gear set and free wheel that yours dose, I found his cycle to lack tourque And be rather slow with very limmited range. What do you antisipate for a reasonable payload on your cycle? His with out the transmission was rated for 200lbs, or so but had trouble with any thing over 130 lbs.
@FireDropTechnologies He can have the same type of motor but have a different watt rating of the motor, a different controller rating and/or a different gear ratio and/or different total weight ratio. All these are playing factors.
@JLJoefisher7JL The motor does generate electricity when you spin it, but this controller is not able to send electricity reverse, back into the batteries, at least to my knowledge.
When you pedaled backwards your tensioner didn't take up the slack in the chain to the motor. Maybe the motor had too much drag for it to turn. -shrug-
@lazzer408 It's because there's no tensioner on top. It will tend to do that and for another reason as well. The tensioner at the bottom part of the chain does not effect the top part because there are sprockets (teeth) in between. It loosens (in reverse only) because this axle cup was not welded as aligned on the arm as our latest ones. This was the very first machined pedal arm. This arm/axle cup worked alright but it was changed for a better aligned axle cup.
@hetcer They are in my videos, if youtube will not let you find them, that is not my problem, they are set to public and I just checked. Look through my videos and you should find them.. They say part 1 and 2
@minibigshow24 The battery stores electricity in the form of voltage (32volts) and amperage.... Voltage controls the Rpm (rotations per minute) of the electric motor (the higher, the more Rpm's) and the current (amps), controls the strength of the motor. (100 amps "peak" is what I use) All this current and voltage is taken away from the battery, through the controller and sent to the motor. Once the batteries reach a specific voltage, the controller auto-resets as a safety, meaning:recharge them
@erichmmiii There are two ways to go about it. Get the cyclone pedal arms at cycloneusa, then the freewheel/sprockets at electricscooterparts, or assemble it with an axle cup off a bicycle which is what we did, and use the parts at electricscooterparts. Need welder to do it the way I did it, need to be relatively precise also in alignment.
Very nice. To get any distance, you will need more battery... I like the drive system, but now that hub-motors are availabe.... why bother with the chains and gears? Just throw one on your front wheel and go....
@OregonDARRYL Because you do not need that much voltage to go fast with gear drives. You can put a hub on a gear drive also, I have seen this done several times.
@luc59457 What kind of range and speed do you get from this system? Is that a deep-cycle battery or a motorcycle/mower type? For the range I want to get - 20 miles or more, I would need more batteries anyway, so wiring them in series to get the higher voltage isn't a problem. I also like the simplicity of the hub design with so few moving parts... But again... I like your system, just wonder about the performance...
@OregonDARRYL Yes they are Deep-cycle. I get 20 miles at 32km/h with new 18ah batteries, with a couple minor hills in the test and light wind conditions. At 35MPH+ in speeds I get around 15 miles which is still far more than I need. There is an advantage of less moving parts with a hub, but there is more torque and speed options with it on a gear ratio, that's all.
@OregonDARRYL There are up to 22ah batteries of similar size/weight/casing as these 18ah. Now I have 20's and I get 20 miles distance at -2.5 degrees Celsius.
hey buddy... great work... keep it up... i gotta ask ya this... your motor is 746w ... i am building my bike... and i got a used motor of 250w.... could ya tell me how much speed i could get with this motor... just a rough idea..... i am going to attach it to two 12 amps batteries..... any ideas how i could make it cheap... and fast and efficient... i would appreciate it... thanx...
@watup2154 No.My motor is rated at: 1152w not 746. 746 is simply the calculation for 1 electric Hp.With a 250w motor, you will NOT get much speed or power, around 32km/h is what you will get and not much hill power unless you assist.Since you mentioned Fast and cheap,I would not recommend Hubs.. Amongst The cheapest would be using a: Car Starter motor. However there are limitations, and this is not professional or lasting! The MOD kit and setup I use would be one of the cheapest for all criteria.
@luc59457 hey thnx alot for yar reply.... i got my 250w used motor for only $8 and now another $17 for brand new two 12 Amps batteries... and prolly i m looking @ a used bike... around $25 ... and adjustments around $5 ... so the total cost would be around $ 50 for an Electric bike is not that bad... lets see i could make some adjustments later for faster speed, and longer range...
@luc59457 Car starter motors are not made for continuous duty. They will overheat. They are very powerful, but inefficient for this kind of purpose. There are many other 12 volt, and 24 volt motors much better suited for electric bikes.
@OregonDARRYL Oh I know... That is why I said 4 days ago, they are not lasting. I have also seen other 12v motors, and 24v, But nothing close to the cost range and size/weight of the Currie for this kind of performance. The only thing that comes close is a starter motor yet this will not last long plus most of the one I have seen are direct switch power, this will make it last even less long.
@BigBuddy636842 A purported advantage of this design is that no additional transmission system is needed, increasing the efficiency of the drive system. However, because electric motors are most efficient at high rates of revolution[citation needed], direct drive hub motors tend to be inefficien
@BigBuddy636842 A hub is usually less work to install.. If you are willing to spend a bit more money I would suggest a brush-less hub motor. Gear drive motors are cheaper vs performance.
this kind of stuff is just amazing to me. its so simple, yet it makes me happy every time i see something like this. and nice camera :) how old is it? i can hear it when it zooms (at the beginning because its quiet)
@luc59457 Do Not tack with the freewheel in place. Once completed, you can either screw on the freewheel tight with a tool, or what I found to be easier, is screw it on snug by hand, attach it to the bike, with only the bike chain and pedal it hard until freewheel is completely tight against the welds.
Hey man - How far does your axle cup thread into the freewheel? Mine stops threading in about 75% of the way abruptly.. it does this from both sides.. none of the threads are damaged. any insight?
@supahobnobba You need nearly 100% because the freewheel will stick out too much and will rub on the cone and the arm may not go in completely. Mine is 100% no threads are showing on the axle cup. The clearance between my freewheel to the beginning of the cone is between 1-2mm. I suggest making 2 precise tack welds at the end of your pedal arm just before the threads of the axle cup (for the exception of using cyclones arm) extending out 1-2mm.
Do not extend the tacks out too much or it could stop the freewheel from spinning with ease. Make sure tacks between the arm of the axle cup are aligned with each other.
@supahobnobba Do not extend the tacks UP too much or it could stop the freewheel from spinning with ease. Make sure tacks between the arm and the axle cup are aligned with each other.
@supahobnobba Perhaps the axle cup/freewheel threads are damaged or their is dirt between. Try cleaning them with gas, etc and try adding lubricant inside before you screw together. If this doesn't help, inspect the freewheel/axle cup carefully and decide if you need a new one(s)
@gtgidemgreen Yes, but it would not be called an e-bike (unless you go hybrid) and in some places of the world you will need a license, etc. Check the transportation laws in your area first, otherwise just use it off road. You will also require some kind of clutch system unless you use a roller on your tire. Some videos on youtube show this. But when you start it will want to torque a bit unless you integrate a clutch. Also, the roller will use up the tire.
@gtgidemgreen @gtgidemgreen A conversion with a weed wacker will cost around 500$... The Currie electric conversion will cost around 1000$ in the USA.
If you took this out in the slush in spring with all the road salt, couldn't it fry your ass? Just asking. I live somewhere that uses LOTS of road salt!
Very salty roads here and no, no real dangers. Best to keep contacts covered and the vital ones are.. I have took this out in slush, salt and just about every condition, flooded roads, etc.. I value the bike and frame, so I clean it every time and grease often enough so things don't rust.. Salt is hard on paint, but I have not had any rust yet.. If I do, I will touch up the spots.. I have also considered winter coating it.
Incorrect.. Not high performance like this.. If you want a dinky e-bike, yes, you are looking around 200-300$.. If you want something that performs like this you are looking in the range of 2000-3000$.. This costs just under 1000$ depending where you live. Very inexpensive for its performance.
That is the average I have seen for the USA and Canada.. Maybe you know of places over-seas? Most people do not want to have a whole bike shipped overseas, it is an extra wasted expense.
Not enough people show DIY's, and if it helps people save money, I am all for it.. Sorry if it effects the e-bike companies that are ripping people off.
Well because I show them, I also drastically help out e-bike businesses.. I have many times for my time on here.. I make recommendations, to several retailers based on the persons preferences.. If they were to decide to prohibit mre doing this, they will be effecting several companies profits.
I help the companies that particularly sell parts for e-bikes but some that sell completed e-bikes also. Considering, you can save hundreds, to even above 1000$ if you DIY, I feel that is important, for people to save, and for some companies NOT to rip people off.. Those business' may become effected by me.. You cannot satisfy them all.
where did you get that 36v 100 amp controller? Can I get 1 like that off ebay? It looks small for the rating. does it overheat with prolonged throttle?
hi. i really want to make an electric bike. I have looked at you channel and i cant find pt 1 and pt 2?? could you please give me a link or somthing like tht. other than that a very good vidieo. from lodos, age 12. P.S your building skills r the best i have seen. :-D
haha, hi there! I would not recommend this for you... Sorry.. I have a friend whose son is like that too, he is into the tech stuff quite young, their is nothing wrong with this at all, and I completely respect that.. But when I was 12 I learned my lessons going too fast.. I can only recommend you something appropriate.. Anything else is at your own conscience and hopefully your parents have a say also LOL. I do not assist anyone under 18 personally.
ok thnks for the advice, u r not the only person to say tht lol. tht bike mustve been pwerful though, u started it with a car charger. 5 outa 5 frm me
For your age, I would recommend you a hub motor e-bike, and if you get the right one you can upgrade it to go a bit faster someday. You can use light LifeP04 batteries, and to put it together is really simple. You can get a hub e-bike that goes up to 32km/h and a good price in the hundreds and you should be fine. This is a regular pedalling speed.
The laws are 32km/h average give or take, for different areas, most people know how to easily bypass the locks on controllers (by using other ones) and at very young age, and many have upgraded their bikes to go a bit faster than 32km/h.. I am satisfied between 32 and 40km/h.. That to me is a very safe speed zone but no faster for bicycles.. Though many have done it, they are not road legal and usually done just for tests and show. Unless You are from Taiwan. LOL
I used them MANY times in the heavy rain.. In literally floods! Thing is, if you don't dry it right after the ride, you are allowing tremendous wear on your bike, gears chain etc.. If all wires are covered and sealed properly from water, you'll be fine.. Mine are not all 100% covered, so it is a bit of a chance I take, but have done it many times, without anything shorting or getting a shock.
This bike can also have covers to shield from the rain.
I would not cover motor unless their is a nice clearance from casing and an air scoop.. It is important that this motor casing be vented at all times. The motor is nearly completely water-tight.. Their is a small place for water to enter, but given its location, very unlikely.
Power Sonic. J'ai beaucoup des videos sur cette canal que relier avec celui. Clic mon nom et cherche pour les video avec "Currie" dans la titre Ou "Evolution". J'ai aussi deux reponses videos juste en haut.
did u see the lincvolt car neil young the singer is trying to build?i'm betting the possibility of a 100 mpg 1959 lincoln could be done.i thank neil young for putting his money time and life into this.
he needs our support as much as the world needs his right now i think.
Is there another way you can make the freewheel on the pedals? i dont have the tools, or skills to do that. I was thinking about buying a one speed freewheel, and then attaching the motor to the left side of the pedal axle
I wanted to if you have tested any bikes that can go 60 to 100 mph with a avergae sized person and has range of 50-70 miles ,1-2 hr charge time or continus charge through power supply, can pull 250-300 pnds in addtion to person on bike going 32 or more and cost no more than 500.
If you want it to cost under 500$ total completed and good performance, use a starter motor... But you'll have to get help from others on here because I have no idea! But I am warning you, there are disadvantage of using this... Most of them are pretty obvious.. No, I have no used parts... You should have no trouble finding used starter motors, if that's what you want.
I know they come off pretty much any bicycles front cone. (It must have the same cone size 1 3/8" OD) For a picture of it: ww(dot)bombayharbor(dot)com/productImage/0368838001228533253/Bb_Cup(dot)JPG Just add a w to the link and fix the Dots..
The #25 sprocket is simply bolted by a matching hole pattern to the freewheel Along with another sprocket (chainring for chain to rear) bolted in the same holes(this is located where your front bicycle sprockets would normally go). The freewheel is screwed onto the axle cup. The Axle cup is welded onto the pedal arm. (See Other videos of mine for freewheel instructions)
So Sorry jimprice09, I removed your comment by accident lol, I wanted to press reply! =( I also want to mention, gear ratio plays a good factor in distance and speed. The ratio in this video was VERY hard on the motor, even though it still went fast! Check my other videos for better ratios
Pour moi, le meilleur choix et le moteur currie. Les KMX est cool, j'ai vu beacoup! Je fait 30km sur le moteur currie, sans pedaller. Avec seulement 18AH - 36v.

I have an old Kinetics 47 ccm Scooter ( belt driven ) And I have a set

this kind of stuff is just amazing to me. its so simple, yet it makes me happy every time i see something like this. and nice camera :) how old is it? i can hear it when it zooms (at the beginning because its quiet)

@luc59457 Those Tacks are to stop the freewheel from screwing in too far. (for the exception of cyclones arm)
luc59457 1 year ago
@luc59457 Do Not tack with the freewheel in place. Once completed, you can either screw on the freewheel tight with a tool, or what I found to be easier, is screw it on snug by hand, attach it to the bike, with only the bike chain and pedal it hard until freewheel is completely tight against the welds.
luc59457 1 year ago
@austinmsnelling i was going to do the same thing lol
papagtuna 1 year ago
Hey man - How far does your axle cup thread into the freewheel? Mine stops threading in about 75% of the way abruptly.. it does this from both sides.. none of the threads are damaged. any insight?
supahobnobba 1 year ago
@supahobnobba Don't mount and align motor/tensioner until this is done.
luc59457 1 year ago
@supahobnobba You need nearly 100% because the freewheel will stick out too much and will rub on the cone and the arm may not go in completely. Mine is 100% no threads are showing on the axle cup. The clearance between my freewheel to the beginning of the cone is between 1-2mm. I suggest making 2 precise tack welds at the end of your pedal arm just before the threads of the axle cup (for the exception of using cyclones arm) extending out 1-2mm.
luc59457 1 year ago
Do not extend the tacks out too much or it could stop the freewheel from spinning with ease. Make sure tacks between the arm of the axle cup are aligned with each other.
luc59457 1 year ago
@supahobnobba Do not extend the tacks UP too much or it could stop the freewheel from spinning with ease. Make sure tacks between the arm and the axle cup are aligned with each other.
luc59457 1 year ago
@supahobnobba Perhaps the axle cup/freewheel threads are damaged or their is dirt between. Try cleaning them with gas, etc and try adding lubricant inside before you screw together. If this doesn't help, inspect the freewheel/axle cup carefully and decide if you need a new one(s)
luc59457 1 year ago
@supahobnobba If the axle cup is rusted that will not help.
luc59457 1 year ago
@austinmsnelling LOL are you serious? I think you should try something else.

doesnt say in your description so this question must keep coming up.. how fast and how long battery last?

would a weed wackers motor work for an e-bike conversion?
gtgidemgreen 1 year ago
@gtgidemgreen Yes, but it would not be called an e-bike (unless you go hybrid) and in some places of the world you will need a license, etc. Check the transportation laws in your area first, otherwise just use it off road. You will also require some kind of clutch system unless you use a roller on your tire. Some videos on youtube show this. But when you start it will want to torque a bit unless you integrate a clutch. Also, the roller will use up the tire.
luc59457 1 year ago
@luc59457 If you integrate or already have a clutch, I would suggest gear or belt drive, not going with the roller idea.
luc59457 1 year ago
@gtgidemgreen @gtgidemgreen A conversion with a weed wacker will cost around 500$... The Currie electric conversion will cost around 1000$ in the USA.
luc59457 1 year ago
How much would a conversion cost?
gtgidemgreen 1 year ago
@gtgidemgreen If you go with S.L.A batteries instead of Lifep04's It will be more around 800-900$ for a Currie Conversion.

If you took this out in the slush in spring with all the road salt, couldn't it fry your ass? Just asking. I live somewhere that uses LOTS of road salt!
giantbluemarlin 2 years ago
Very salty roads here and no, no real dangers. Best to keep contacts covered and the vital ones are.. I have took this out in slush, salt and just about every condition, flooded roads, etc.. I value the bike and frame, so I clean it every time and grease often enough so things don't rust.. Salt is hard on paint, but I have not had any rust yet.. If I do, I will touch up the spots.. I have also considered winter coating it.

Sorry forget that last comment, I wrote that comment before you talk bout the motor.
But how did you get the cranks not spin when the motor is on. you must have added a freewheel for the crank arm?

What motor are you using?

built one cost more than just buy one
thegreatkoua 2 years ago
Incorrect.. Not high performance like this.. If you want a dinky e-bike, yes, you are looking around 200-300$.. If you want something that performs like this you are looking in the range of 2000-3000$.. This costs just under 1000$ depending where you live. Very inexpensive for its performance.
luc59457 2 years ago
it's depend where you look to buy
thegreatkoua 2 years ago
That is the average I have seen for the USA and Canada.. Maybe you know of places over-seas? Most people do not want to have a whole bike shipped overseas, it is an extra wasted expense.
luc59457 2 years ago
alright where do you buy you stuff i can't find anywhere that is cheap

luc59457 2 years ago
Hi Luc,
Does that chain guide between the freewheel sprocket and motor serve to reduce motor rpms (to approximate rider cadence)?
MaxSachs 2 years ago
Sorry, not the chain guide, what you called the "tensioner". Does it also reduce motor rpms?
MaxSachs 2 years ago
Perhaps a few because of friction, but it has nothing to do with the ratio if that's what you means.
luc59457 2 years ago
Very minor friction.
luc59457 2 years ago
Oh I see. I assume since the tensioner had teeth and wasn't a smooth one (like on those old schwinn deraillers) it would lower the ratio. Thanks man.

as soon as i buy my own ebike ill show step by step how to build it

Not enough people show DIY's, and if it helps people save money, I am all for it.. Sorry if it effects the e-bike companies that are ripping people off.
luc59457 2 years ago
most you tubes arent allowed to show how to do things thats how the bike builders make there commisions at the ebike shop
narcovice 2 years ago
Well because I show them, I also drastically help out e-bike businesses.. I have many times for my time on here.. I make recommendations, to several retailers based on the persons preferences.. If they were to decide to prohibit mre doing this, they will be effecting several companies profits.
luc59457 2 years ago
I help the companies that particularly sell parts for e-bikes but some that sell completed e-bikes also. Considering, you can save hundreds, to even above 1000$ if you DIY, I feel that is important, for people to save, and for some companies NOT to rip people off.. Those business' may become effected by me.. You cannot satisfy them all.

hi. i really want to make an electric bike. I have looked at you channel and i cant find pt 1 and pt 2?? could you please give me a link or somthing like tht. other than that a very good vidieo. from lodos, age 12. P.S your building skills r the best i have seen. :-D
lodos256 2 years ago
haha, hi there! I do not assist anyone under 18 personally.
luc59457 2 years ago
ok thnks for the advice, u r not the only person to say tht lol. tht bike mustve been pwerful though, u started it with a car charger. 5 outa 5 frm me
lodos256 2 years ago
For your age, I would recommend you a hub motor e-bike, and if you get the right one you can upgrade it to go a bit faster someday. You can use light LifeP04 batteries, and to put it together is really simple. You can get a hub e-bike that goes up to 32km/h and a good price in the hundreds and you should be fine. This is a regular pedalling speed.
luc59457 2 years ago
The laws are 32km/h average give or take, for different areas, most people know how to easily bypass the locks on controllers (by using other ones) and at very young age, and many have upgraded their bikes to go a bit faster than 32km/h.. I am satisfied between 32 and 40km/h.. That to me is a very safe speed zone but no faster for bicycles.. Though many have done it, they are not road legal and usually done just for tests and show. Unless You are from Taiwan. LOL
luc59457 2 years ago
Can you use them even if it is raining?
joelbernarte 2 years ago
I used them MANY times in the heavy rain.. In literally floods! Thing is, if you don't dry it right after the ride, you are allowing tremendous wear on your bike, gears chain etc.. If all wires are covered and sealed properly from water, you'll be fine.. Mine are not all 100% covered, so it is a bit of a chance I take, but have done it many times, without anything shorting or getting a shock.
This bike can also have covers to shield from the rain.
luc59457 2 years ago
Keeping chain greased will help it from rusting in the rain and winter.
luc59457 2 years ago
I would not cover motor unless their is a nice clearance from casing and an air scoop.. It is important that this motor casing be vented at all times. The motor is nearly completely water-tight.. Their is a small place for water to enter, but given its location, very unlikely.

Is there another way you can make the freewheel on the pedals? i dont have the tools, or skills to do that. I was thinking about buying a one speed freewheel, and then attaching the motor to the left side of the pedal axle
DSishere123 2 years ago
Have you used any used parts for the engine or other items needed.I wanted to make one of my own but don't know where to get used parts
finalwave29 2 years ago
I wanted to if you have tested any bikes that can go 60 to 100 mph with a avergae sized person and has range of 50-70 miles ,1-2 hr charge time or continus charge through power supply, can pull 250-300 pnds in addtion to person on bike going 32 or more and cost no more than 500.
finalwave29 2 years ago

You are way off... It's 3600w peak.
luc59457 2 years ago
sorry i am a beginer how did you set it up so the bike could accept the 25 chain?
dumdog927 2 years ago
The #25 sprocket is simply bolted by a matching hole pattern to the freewheel Along with another sprocket (chainring for chain to rear) bolted in the same holes(this is located where your front bicycle sprockets would normally go). The freewheel is screwed onto the axle cup. The Axle cup is welded onto the pedal arm. (See Other videos of mine for freewheel instructions)
luc59457 2 years ago
Depends on how strong your motor is. For this one it is well under 1000rpm at the rear cassette. It is more around 400-600rpm.
luc59457 3 years ago
Keep looking into the rest of my videos please
luc59457 3 years ago
If you use 36AH batteries total, you will get around double our distance with the same bike especially since you are using lighter batteries than us.
luc59457 3 years ago
So Sorry jimprice09, I removed your comment by accident lol, I wanted to press reply! =( I also want to mention, gear ratio plays a good factor in distance and speed. The ratio in this video was VERY hard on the motor, even though it still went fast! Check my other videos for better ratios

luc59457 3 years ago

merci,
ps tu es de quel coin?
jimprice09 3 years ago
Pour moi, le meilleur choix et le moteur currie. Les KMX est cool, j'ai vu beacoup! Je fait 30km sur le moteur currie, sans pedaller. Avec seulement 18AH - 36v.
