@vampiretiffiany After we cut the sunflowers we put the soil and the ends into our compost bin. Or you can just throw it into your yard or garden and let the birds have at it.
@magylyn That is what Minh and I use. It is a long explanation, but basically, you will be eating the sprout that grows from the seed, not the seed itself. We have been using the cheap ( $16. for 25 pounds ) seeds for years.
From my experience, it is better if you plant the seeds sooner. Once the root is just poking through the shell is best. I have had much better success than waiting until the roots are about an inch long. It is easier to distribute them more evenly over the soil that way.
Thanks for the video. Keep spreading the word on how to grow your own nutritious sprouts.
@ytoobpg We are using Sunflower seeds used to feed birds (Black Oil). Keep in mind that we are not eating the seeds, we are eating the plant that grows from the seed.
I will look for sunflower seeds, thank you for this video, I have you as a fb contact, I appreciate all the information you share and plan on buying a recipe book soon. I live in Italy so I have to look for sunflower seeds, semi di girasole. The only ones I've found at healthfood stores are without their black seed covering, they have been hulled. I will look for unhulled ones. Thank you Dea xo

please help me....I heve a problem with my giant sunflowers...They are still 1 foot tall but their petals are already coming out....Ive been putting fertilizer once a week but they are too small to bloom a flower...what should I do?
@elmrenz This video is about growing sunflower greens, not sunflowers. But I have found that Sunflowers grow easily with little human intervention. Maybe you are fertilizing too much?
@rskurow Learned something new: the sunflower seeds are not raw and sprouts will still grow from them? I thought once cooked, the seed is dead. Thank you :-)
Ronnie and Minh, I really enjoy your videos! Thank you for making them... Question about the seeds, I would love to get a big bag of black oil seeds for birds, but I worry about them maybe being grown with chemicals. You really think they are ok though? Maybe I worry too much!
@sharonsoars You won't be eating the seeds, you will be eating the sprouts that grow from the seeds. We buy the Black Oil Sunflower Seeds seeds at Wallmart.
@elmrenz Be sure to follow the video. Soak them overnight, then rinse and drain several times a day till they grow a tail, plant them in 1/4 inch of dirt and cover them with 1/4 inch of dirt, water every day. Thousands are having success with this very method. Are you using hulled or unhulled seeds? The seeds need to have the hulls intact.
What a great service you have done! I have been wanting to grow sunflower sprouts for so many years yet never felt I could understand well enough HOW to do it. Thanks to your video (and DVD) I am going to finally try it...!!!
I went to a health food store and bought organic soil and sunflower seeds. I have two questions. 1) Can you reuse the soil once you have the sprouts (I would think so) also were did you buy the small planter ? I cant find that anywhere!! Thanks!!
@pbry99 We don't reuse the soil, and I would not recommend that you do. We use the bottom (saucer) from a large pot, you can find them at any nursery. Good luck with your Sunflowers!
I just ate a few of mine that i have been growing since 1.5 week and i must say they are delicious! I'm not "raw" but can imagine them in a wrap or on a sandwich!
You can harvest them any time after they are a few inches tall. You want to harvest them before the second set of leaves appear (we say that in the video). If you know how to keep food fresh, they will last for about a week in the fridg.
I'm so excited! I've been wanting to do this and know I know how:o)
When is the earliest that I can harvest them? How long will they last before the secons set of leaves? That whole pot of sprouts would last me a week!
When I harvest them, can I keep them cut in the fridge? How long?
I love your videos. After you plant the sunflower sprouts and bring them in to grow, where do you put them? Do you put them in the dark, or do you leave them out. Also, once you cover them with dirt, do you need to also cover them with something else? Thanks
When you bring them inside let them be in indirect sunlight, you can rotate them every day so they don't slant toward the sun. After you cover them with a thin coat of dirt, that's it, nothing else.
Thanks for the great tutorial. I've been sprouting more with things like mung bean and clover but have yet to try sunflower because of the soil involved. Now I see how easy it is and can't wait to scoop some seeds up at the store. Thanks Ronnie and Minh!
Great Video. I too love my sunflower greens! I am looking forward to your daily vlog. I am a big fan and own your dvds too. Blessings to you and Minh.
hey i was just wondering... im going to grow sunflowers fully grown and was wondering that if the main root is horizontal will the whole root system be horizontal
I don't bother to sprout them though, as I find too many of the tails break off. I just soak overnight, and sprout for 1/2 day to a day, then plant and cover with a small amt of soil like you do.
I saw another vid on how Tree of Life grows theirs and they don't cover with soil, but put another bottom cover over theirs. The one time I did this, mine got moldy, so I've returned to covering with soil.
We use Black Sunflower seeds used for feeding birds. We buy them at Wallmart or Intermountain Farmers. A 25lb bag should last you about a year and should cost about 18$.
what do you do with the cut end???

After you place the sprouted seeds in the dirt, do you expose them to sunlight? I'm trying to decide if I should put them by a window or not.

What kind of sunflower seeds are you using.? I went to Walmart and all they had was bird seed that was black oil with a coating on it.
youtoo1998 1 year ago
The black oil seeds work fine, remember you are eating the sprout, not the seed. Rinse the seeds before you sprout them.
