However, it's the reflection.

It's the same reason that the surface of the moon facing the sun is very bright but the sky is black, no stars, nothing.

The reflection of light off of the ground is too intense and blocks out other light, or rather makes it seem so miniscule.

I don't understand where this "explosion is only a foot tall" comment comes from- that's just not true. The bomb itself is 5 feet tall... an explosion isn't measured in feet anyway, I get so annoyed when people say things like it's fact and it's just bullshit. 1) the explosion wasn't 1 foot tall, in fact there is no discernible way to measure an explosion in feet.

2) it's not an ignited explosion so throw out any understanding you have of bombs, using refined uranium and plutonium you start a chain reaction that sends charged atoms from 1 atom to the next, splitting them into pure energy, when there is no where else for them to skip they are released as light, radiation, heat, and pressure. It's all earthly.

You can tell by the movement of the mushroom cloud that it's not a small explosion. The film is from the 40's hence the poor quality. Also the intense flash produced by the explosion affects the picture quality I'm sure.
