A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS WERE ONE OF THE BEST 80'S BANDS. THEY CREATED BEAUTIFUL SONGS AND NOW WE CAN STILL WATCH THEIR PLAYING THANKS TO ALL THOSE WHO UPLOAD THEM TO YOUTUBE. THOSE WHO MAKE FUN OF MUSIC FROM OTHER DECADES 90'S, 80'S, 70'S, 60'S, 50'S, ETCETERA, ARE IGNORANT WHO SHOULD LEARN TO APPRECIATE GREAT MUSIC FROM ANY ERA.
@INFINITOCACHIRULO Great comment. Some music today is good, just gotta search for watcha like as usual. T.V. has changed quite a bit. Utube helps a little with very short video clips. I would rather see concerts of bands or buy videos of classics. Full length videos show more coverage. Good day. Thanks for using the caps lock, it was much easier to read. : )
@Winky395 here's the thing: no matter when it happens to be, or what's happening, it's ALWAYS a great time to be in your 20's. and that time, no matter when it is, or what's happening, is always the RIGHT time to be in your 20's...BECAUSE you're in your 20's.
you just don't always realize the beautiful and ruthless simplicity of that - because you're only in your 20's. most people don't appreciate any of it until their 20's are long gone.
so you kids, think about it. think HARD. then LIVE.
@DaveBTHunt Should add don't get married to young either. My friends all got hitched in their 20's and are all divorced and broke or miserable. I thought maybe I made a mistake but I learned that most people don't want to hang with the same person in their 40's that they had in their 20's. It's not just the age they where, but the freedom they had at that age.
@DaveBTHunt Yep, think hard and then you become 30, then your in your 40's etc. Then some people think age is just a number. Maybe it's maturity, hell who knows. Everyone has there opinions. Cool video. Original sounds always from FLock of Seagulls.
The 80's soooo many styles upon styles. Pop, Rock, Heavy Metal, New Wave, H.O.U.S.E, Freestyle(CLUB/Latin Hip Hop), Top 40, Go Go and Hip Hop and many more I may have been unaware of.
I instantly fell in love with AFOS when I first heard this song back then. This song is an absolute study of simplicity; 3 chords, very simple lyrics, but still a pop masterpiece largely owing to Paul Reynolds' beautiful guitar playing.
I haven't been able to get this song out of my head I just love it has to be my 2nd favourite of theirs 1st being "I Ran". I love the music from the 60s 70s and 80s music nowadays just isn't the same, of course I wouldn't remember the 80s as I was born than but I am glad I am an 80s baby and not a 90s one. The trend and style of music hair and clothing was awesome----baggy pants aren't.
I agree - he had great command over the effects that MADE new wave and indie guitar during that decade, including chorus, phaser, echo, and delay. He just had great ideas -- listen to how he throws in those natural harmonics at the 7th fret in the main riff. Very cool.
@yagamei I don't know why, but I was reminded of The Edge when first hearing this song the other day. I can't see how he Paul Reynolds would've been influenced by The Edge at this time, though. I'd think that would've been too early (1982). Never the less, I agree with you. Great guitar player with a original sound. Wonder what he went to do after Flock...
couldnt agree with you more. Many 80s bands (ex The Police) returned in the middle of this decade even though some had no new material it was nice to see reunions of these bands
@jellyboy123 We had some good music. The best? I'm not so sure. Every decade, except since 1990 has excellent music. From 1990 on, the good music is the exception, not the norm. Rap and Grunge really started a downward trend in talent.
@christschool Don't know if I would call Rap Music, since its not really music. Grunge is open for discussion, depends on your liking. But the 80s produced a lot of talent, even though most of it originated in the 70s as a found ground. But you got to give Reynolds the props here, he is amazing.
@Commander297 I'd like hear your highfalutin definition of what exactly constitutes music... not to mention that if we're going to play that game you can't exactly cite A Flock of Seagulls as an example of the most artistically valid music out there.
@mojiggity would never cite them as most artistically, but you have to admit that some tunes just hit the nerv. And Reynolds has game. Sure one could argue that the riffs are simple, but so are U2's, Simple Minds etc. I think that each area of time had its own specialty part of talent and new technology, which of course enhanced certain talents. But this is a great song, plain and simple.
@Commander297 No doubt; I think that the first FOS album is a pop masterwork in terms of production and tonality while occupying the extremes of the spectrum in terms of songwriting (eg really awesome or really shitty), but I think that to say that rap isn't music is absolutely ridiculous. However commercial and horrible the mainstream kinds are they still are technically music.
@jellyboy123 i can't agree with that. the 80s had some really good music, but overall it fell flat after the first half. some really cool stuff, but not the best.
Hey dont feel left out I was born in 86 and barely remember the decade but I know (in my very humble opinion of course) that 80s rock is the best rock out there as far as music goes. The Police were before my time and my favorite band this band was also before my time and another favorite. The 80s had very modern to futuristic sounds thats why i kinda liked it
It really is too bad what happened to Paul Reynolds, he gave the band a special and very unique sound. WHo knows, AFOS could have gone the way of Depeche Mode....
I totally agree. I remember when this stuff first starting coming out and for me, it all about Paul R's lines and his great tone. This song has three chords, nothing but whole note pads on the synth, an incredibly slow harmonic rhythm (chords change every 4 bars), two verses, and that's pretty much it - except for that brilliant guitar part. I love AFOS and I think Paul Reynolds is maybe under-appreciated for his contribution to that era of music.
thats the hair that i always want to have but unfortunately it still continues to be a dream..the guy in the movie the wedding singer did a great job in copying his hairdo. You are one of my favorites AFOS !!
80s are amazing, im young, and i listen to alot of other shit, but my point is that many young people do appreciate the 80s and the music/styles. I personally prefer the band Men without Hats.
seen them at knitting factory by accident last year they were still good took me down memory lane and they sure dont have that much hair any more just thinning baldness but they were great
Yes that was the decade where music was really music for our ears .The music is like the timing on a car all out of sync! more than half of the music they play today is either cussing or a form of sex and violence thats why this generation of kids are the way they are . snowman0636 I love that comment of yours i agree! What can I say this is ggod music they are and always have been since the early 80's there has not been a whole week since the 80's that i have not listend to there song's
I had my hair almost like this but the front went all the way around. woman who cut it, called it a crown. and it was below my sshoulders in the back. use to get girls any time, any place. cool times great music
This song brings tears to my eyes and I don't even really know why. It's simply so stunning in so many ways. And it's my opinion that while I would never want a hairstyle like the singer's wild look, perhaps that was the point: I would HAVE to have a set of stylists to attain it. I think it must have been a severe statement of pure decadence. No respect whatsoever for "tradition", no regard for cost to obtain. That, to me, is what screams EIGHTIES about it. Just my opinion, of course. :-)
i cant belive i have never heard this song before..i was watching "kicking it old school" the movie, and i heard this song in the end and i was like wow!!...i new it was flock of seagulls by those guitar riffs...My new favorite song!!!
you cant compare whatever DICKLEBACK!!to a flock of seagulls in my book and to many others they are a legend!!! and always will be not like that GARBAGE!! they play today back in the 80s that kind og hairstyle was in style and whoever said that because you have that kinda hairdo your gay come on get a life !! A flock of seagulls do . Do you!!?? wise up keep rocking america AFOS and do not listen to ignorance!! I got your back Mike and your music will live 4-ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Keep in mind this was 'mainstream' rock back in the early 80's. My have we retrograded as a culture with all of the dull garbage, which abounds in modern rock radio today. It astonishes me that the younger generation of today actually consider bands like, 'Puddle of Mud' and Nickelback to be part of the Rock Genre. I'm sorry, but the slew of redneck bands coming out today should be played on a 'harder edge' country station along with the likes of Toby Keith and Trace Atkins.
You do sound like an idiot indeed phanotm. As a matter of fact, you can't even spell 'phantom' right. Could it be that you defend Nickelback, because they are fellow Canadian compatriots? Well anyway, in my opinion Nickleback is an embarrassment to all Canadians considering all of the great 'rock' bands that have come out of Canada. One of the problems with mainstream rock today is all of the redneck bands who consider themselves to be rock, and nickleback leads the pack.
