  • so sickkkkkk

  • good lord mr. kinsella is a genious, and I love the cracked cd case at 5:26, classic and authentic.

  • Comment removed

  • fuck this, its a good song, it doesn't deserve the dogmatism. especially the uploader, who is so slef righteous in his comments, and in the fucking essay he wrote about it in the descriptions. this is good music, the idiotic listeners allowed this style to be corrupted

  • "That's life. So social."

Fuck you, Mike Kinsella. How can you write a perfect record.

  • hey man...do u have the original lyric of "honestly"? I mean, of the original Digital Booklet.

Can you send it to me

  • This sucks!!! I was expecting punk!!!

  • @Leggy182 this is probably one of the best bands alive lyrically !

  • @Leggy182 go away

  • @Leggy182 punk, hardcore, math rock its all good so this doesn't suck.

  • beautiful. this band has iventend something in music.

  • love it, reminds me of FNL days haha even though yes, I know it was EITS who does their music.......kinda reminds me of Fall in New England as well

  • I love this band. i'm using appleseed cast + this town needs guns to fill the void

  • @adamisjames

I wanted to thank people for their good taste in music. So thank you. This is the only video I even did that in anyways. Speaking of which I should change that to over a 100,000 sometime.

  • @adamisjames fuck your mother

  • Are these pictures of the inside cover of the album?

If so, thanks for uploading them. these guys are from my hometown and i am still yet to find a physical copy of this cd anywhere around here :P

  • @jacksgraytshirt

They are. At the time. I always had a hard time getting the highest quality I wanted. They got a little better in my later uploads. Anyways thanks for the comment.

  • Whenever I hear this song I start to think of many things like my friends,my life, and where i'll go in the future hopefully it's good.

  • Its a completely different generation of emo than what most people think of. My favorite song on the album for sure.

  • I love American Football. This is my favourite band. These songs break my heart every time I listen. So sad...and so beatiful.

  • i love this song

  • reminds me of carissa's wierd.love bands like this.makes you wanna take a drive and pop this in the radio and be one with nature.

  • Everyone argues over stupid things on the music video. Just listen to the music. Isn't that what you came here for?

  • Why does everyone have to get thumbs up? Does it make your ego feel righteous?

  • @gunslinger713

Chill dude. No need to be a dick. No one said anything about this being a "hipster" band.

  • Such wonderful songs <3

  • @Alifeofarticsounds

Yeah I know right. I was commenting on this particular upload much anymore just because well what could I possibly say now that would be worth more than the people who have been commenting lately. This song is essentially, life extended forever.

  • This song is so cool so beautiful

  • I like this band but all you faggot hipsters give them a bad rep.

  • Before I hit 'like' on this video, there were 123 likes.

  • i love all there songs...

  • For Ana Im srry if I fucked up

  • koo-ass-shiii-rie-hear

  • I just want to say the true emotive bands(i mean all great bands) sing from their heart.

Not from the clothes in nowadays.

  • @HenryChing93

That's completely right. The term emo was pretty much ruined when it became a fashion. I remember using the term emo (or emocore) in the later 90's and no one understood what I meant by it.

That term seems blasphemous now, but It's not what you are wearing, it's what's in your heart and how you express it.

  • @notyoursavior78 Yeah, i miss this band and most of the bands in 60-90s so much. In fact, i look forward in everwhere and saw some great bands in these days but way underrated, people should be listen true music like this, without trendy shits.

Finally, thanks your sharing, greetings from Hong Kong.

  • @notyoursavior78 not only that, but "emo" music has developed into some screamo shit that is nothing compared to this. This is actually musically awesome, and not just a drop d power chord over yelling and screaming about the same subjects.

  • @ChasHolling

    Correct.

  • @ChasHolling Pet Peeve. The term screamo is actually just as misused as the word emo. Screamo is actually a type of music in the 90's too that's been given a different connotation now a days. Just a heads up.

Check out Pianos Become The Teeth or Raein. That's true screamo.

  • @xJonRileyx I don't care, it's still shitty music.

  • @xJonRileyx PBTT is just post-hardcore band. How about Orchid and Saetia? They're both screamo.

  • @TheDepressed100

I do like Saetia, but not at first, but they do scream a lot too as well as I Hate Myself and the Saddest Landscape. We all have our views I suppose.

  • @notyoursavior78

I know right im 16 and iv know that now a days indie and emo has been taken over by hipsters and ppl that want other ppl to think ther so unique.

this is real "different" music and real songwriting

  • @notyoursavior78 i mean, there's someone who listens to this music and wear emo fashion. You can't judge them by dressing emo because there are no rules and these kids can do whatever they want.

  • @HenryChing93 Ur so right dude Fuck all those ignorants

  • i'm impressed

  • Love this band!

  • Thanks for all the recent comments! Glad the interest is still going strong with AF and the comments. As my first upload still a little surprised it got as big as it did, quite quickly. Anyways...

I try to check all the band suggestions. I have some more to check out now (or to get back to) in the following days. Thanks though! Recently I got into Christie Front Drive off a suggestion. I love their stuff. Mineral is solid too.

  • Probably the best-sounding CD I've ever heard, and I've heard a lot of CDs. The attention to sound quality is amazing.

  • ive just recently gotten into the old emo scene, bands like this texas is the reason sunny day real estate the promise ring, without those bands so many of the bands we know falsely as "emo" today wouldnt exist, and these bands that never made it big outside of basements in the midwest suburbs, r a million times better than all this mainstream justin bieber and lady gaga bullshit today

  • @XxAdTrFrEaKiNrOcKsXx

I find it hard to stop listening to the Texas is the Reason cd I got: Do You Know Who You Are? There are some other bands today though that try to keep the original 90's feeling going and are genuine like Empire Empire or Castevet. I'd give them a search on here if you are interested.

  • @notyoursavior78

mmh empire empire, fuck i love them!

  • @notyoursavior78 yeah, Castevet's great, and Snowing, Street Smart Cyclist, La Dispute, Grown Ups, and Algernon Cadwallader are bringing it back too!

  • @TheSolarCompromise dont forget Native

  • @notyoursavior78 The Texas is the Reason E.P. is incredible too, and check out Moss Icon and Heroin if you want to hear something a bit different!

  • @XxAdTrFrEaKiNrOcKsXx I would recomend the bands Mineral, Christie Front Drive, and Still Life if you like this band.

  • @AnotherSeasonGone

rather go breathing walker, moss icon, joie de vivre, as tall as lions or benton falls(poppyist/newer).

  • Great uploads. Loved this band as well.

  • "Thats life, its so so short.." so so true :(

  • @OwwMyNuts Damn it I got the lyrics wrong.

  • i listen to this song everytime before i go out to race

  • It's hard to believe these guys only have `12 songs.

  • @crassisdead Or rather, tough to accept they only have 12 songs. :P

  • @rootvalue Haha yeah.

  • Don't you love polyvinyl records? A great company, releases a ton of great CDs and awesome merch. :)

  • But that's life... it's so so short.

  • "That's life -- So Social" is a motto to live by. Anyone who tries to define this song without peppering their definition with the words 'flawless' and 'perfect' is clearly doing it wrong.

  • Reminds me of explosions in the sky. =)

  • I guess I`ll stay home tonight.

  • what album is this off of? i thought they only had the self-titled and the polyvinyl single... i say just upload all the songs!!! im greedy, sorry.

  • It's from the self titled LP (as pictured). You can probably find most of this album (if not all) track by track on youtube uploaded by different people.

I did upload the entire Polyvinyl single though which is three songs.

  • amazing song. has been one of my favs for years now!

  • Song made me cry...

  • this bands amazing, i love this song its like 10 mintutes long, i actually have almost all there songs on my ipod...

  • Good job! I'm glad so many people love and respect this band.

  • @notyoursavior78 Such a great emo band!

  • @busybusybusy123 Ahh... Yes. But aren't they so much more than that? Whether you label them emo or not, I don't care. I can clearly see how you would label them such. But they mixed elements from so many genres of music that they made something totally one of a kind an completely unique. You simply can't find anything like this. So many American Football songs practically bring me to tears, and I'm not the kind of person who cries after listening to music.

  • @DesolateRegard

Yeah I also love how the guitars layer. It's hard to find songs like that where you got two guitars playing different chords in perfect harmony.

  • Lovely

  • I am basically in love with their music. It is simply lovely :]

  • Comment removed

  • Frankly, this is just beautiful. I have nothing more to say. Thank you for the video

  • I've been listening to this album for about 2 years now. It hasn't gotten old.

  • I have this cd as well, it was very hard to come by! Had to go to an independent record store an hour away just to purchase this

  • wow i just noticed that cd cover art is beautiful i have never held the cd in my hands i had a copy of it back in 2002. Amazing man thanks for posting this

  • Yeah the cd cover art is awesome. The Liner notes are extremely well done and classy too.

  • He has a cd from 2001 called owen he made immiediatly after disbanding from american football. It is by FAR the most amazing peiece of acoustic/digital/abstract cd you will ever hear. Each song captures the atmosphere in your room and adds to it, creating a precence of energy that will make you feel the song not only hear it.

  • Yeah I have that Owen cd too. You pretty much described exactly how I feel about it as well I couldn't describe it better.

I uploaded one of the songs from there, I actually should upload the second part of the song if someone didn't already. Because both of those songs go together so well.

    "Most Days And....Most Nights."

  • this band is everythhing to me. Its the feelings that are floating around in the room, It harnesses emotion and abstract feelings, turning them in mathematical musical concepts. I cant explain what this band means to me. Its been there for me since i was in high school. 7 years later and its still there for me.

  • I bought the album last year.

    Very good investment,

and I love this song as well.

  • I've been seeing this bands name on YT for quite sometime now. I finally clicked on one of these videos, and now i'm wondering why the hell it took me so long to discover them. It's a shame they broke up. Their songs have have a very real, and distinct texture to them. Great upload!

  • i love this band esp the drums it sound so diff, kinda like off beat but not... idont know what you call it. do some of you know any bands that sound like these i mean besides mineral or penfold... thanks...

  • Someone suggested me Empire! Empire! (I was a Lonely Estate) and I really liked them.

Another band I just got a cd of a few days ago, musically sounds similar to them though the vocals are very different, Castevet. I uploaded a song by them actually.

Anyways you can always just keep listening to the various American Football songs on here or Owen (Mike Kinsella, the vocalist and guitarist of this band) started that project after American Football broke up. More laid back, but good.

  • I have to respond again about the drums b/c I ran out of the space, yeah they are awesome, I dunno what it is, they are such appropriate timing, yet.....yea I can't really explain how infectious they are either.

  • hey man your right castevet is good thanks...

  • is jazz, it sounds different because the beats are 4 bars like typical music. the patterns in jazz could be like 12 bar patterns.

  • er i thought math rock was more like hella, or tera melos, or don caballero.

  • well you'd be right and wrong most musicians who are tagged with math rock come to dislike the term since there seems to be different encompassing things withing the music thats been tagged as such and no real good point of reference.

seems like theres the more technical bands like those you mentioned along with others who write more "song songs" with tapping which has also been tagged with math rock

yeah those bands are all really great, if you like don cab check out storm and stress

  • correct.... Maps and Atlases is also a good example

  • Maps and Atlases is amazing.

  • @FUELEDbyVEGGIES I know right? :)

  • almost sounds a little post-rock in the beginning. first time hearing this band, its awesome!

  • This band is pretty much perfect.

  • Thank you and true!! I haven't been on YT in almost a week. I just feel it is best to take time off occasionally lol

    Expect many thumbs up ;)

  • I'll See You When We're Both Not So Emotional.

everything this band did was good. i'm glad they broke up before they made some sort of mistake. god forbid these gentleman play a wrong note.

  • mike kinsella has a similar project called "the one up downstairs EP"

it's on itunes. it sounds pretty similar to american football.

  • franco the bull is awesome

  • dude youre so lucky that you havethis albm :) i cant find it ANYWHERE in my town. ill buy it off itunes if i have to but id much rather actually own the album ya know? thanks for posting

  • I got mine off the interpunk website. If you can order stuff online they have them. That's where I got mine. It's not like I'm lucky enough to find this in actual music stores either. Thanks for the comment and viewing :D

Yea I always would rather own the actual cd as opposed to just some files.

  • thanks for the advice. no prb man :)

  • gimme a break yeah just buy it from some online dealer or get it off bit torrents if you want.

  • on Polyvinil Records website you can find all their stuff. ;)

  • thankyou for this upload :)

    what an amazing band

  • mike kinsella isnt the vocalist bro he plays the drums in AF

  • ? Unless the cd credits and the allmusic website are wrong:

"American Football consists of vocalist/bassist/guitarist Mike Kinsella, guitarist Steve Holmes, and drummer/trumpet player Steve Lamos."

I know Mike Kinsella has played the drums before, but that was in a different band.

  • I think he played them in Cap'n Jazz and Joan of Arc.

  • never meant will always be my favourite song by them

  • do they ever sing?

  • Yeah it just has a long awesome build-up.

  • whats your favorite album of theres?

I just found out about them

  • They only have two albums. This one and the S/T EP. Though Mike Kinsella, the vocalist of this band started his own side project named Owen afterwards.

Anyways I really like the three song EP because every song is great. On the LP it can be a little inconsistent just because you start with "Never Meant" which is like one of the best songs ever, it's hard for every song to achieve that level.

  • thanks cause i really should get a copy of it

and and owen cd as well

im an indi artist myself, some of my songs are on my page

    thanks again

  • Diggin' Mario at 0:10.

  • I was hoping someone would comment on the Mario bookmark or the Atari 7800!!

    Thanks much for commenting.

  • Oh that's a bookmark? I thought it was a guitar strap... Which would be sick!

  • I wish, man! I wasn't really intending to get a picture of the Atari 7800 and Mario Bookmark it just so happened I was drunk and the lighting over there was great!

  • i love this songg...

  • i just found these guys and am diggin them very much

  • American Football were an amazing band. One of my favourite bands to ever exist. Great song.

  • It's a damn beautiful song, but is it

    "but that's life so social"

or "but that's life so so short"?

I liek to think it's the latter but all the lyrics sites say he sings "social".. They may be wrong though.

  • It sounds like, "that's life, so social" to me.

    Thanks for the comment!

  • It sounds like it alternates between so social and so so short

  • I believe it's "so social" then "so so-so".

  • in my opinion he says "so-so short", but i'm not sure!

  • I agree

  • "that's life, so social"

  • ahmazing(:

  • If you like American Football, you should check out a band called "empire! empire! (i was a lonely estate)"

And another band you might be interested in is This Town Needs Guns..

  • Hey I checked out some Empire, Empire stuff! They have a Sunny Day Real Estate vibe too, another band I love. Thanks for the suggestion! I heard one of their live songs on here.

The songs I heard on their myspace sound great.

  • nice band.

  • just recently discovered these guys, their clean guitar work is awesome

  • im listening to these guys for the first time.. found them by accident...

i love how emotional it is..

it reminds me of an Armor For Sleep song...

  • Hey, cool. Yeah I know who Armor For Sleep is. I remember hearing their songs when I used to listen to the radio more. "Car Underwater" was one of the songs I remember hearing and I liked it.

There are more American Football songs on youtube and I uploaded a few more as well. Thanks for the comment!

  • Yeah. I meant the beginning where its all instrumental is super emotional. Whoops. This is one of my favs off this album, I also like I'll see you when we're both not so emotional. You should make a video of that. If you havent listened to cap'n jazz or joan of arc i recommend it.

  • Yeah I own the album it's awesome. I love that song. I didn't upload that one because some else uploaded it or at least I thought someone did...but I could always upload more from this album anyways.

There can't be enough American Football on youtube. And yea I love the build up in this song here, it's soooo amazing. I just heard some Owen and I really like a couple of the songs, but AF is really something special.

  • AF is my favorite out of all their projects, but Cap N Jazz is what I heard first. There are a suprisingly large amount of bands that can sound just like Kinsellas voice. one of them is Algernon Cadwallader and theyre one of my favorite bands. They are not so slow as American Football, but I really like them. They sound like when Mike was in Cap N Jazz, its so good.

  • I'll research "Algernon Cadwallader" sometime tonight. American Football is what I heard first. I don't remember if interpunk had any short samples from the cds....I think they had a sample from "Never Meant." But that and the band name lol is one of the reasons why I bought the cd.

  • if you like armor for sleep yu should listen to the end of the world by them it was on the transformers soundtrack. sexy song.

  • thats an alright song by them.. they have tons more better ones tho

  • Is there a Joan of Arc album AF fans should start with? I've sampled their stuff but it seems really different. Owls sounds somewhat similar so I'm leaning towards giving their album a shot. Thx for the Algernon Cadwallader suggestion, they really do sound like AF.

  • i LOVE this song. and the kinsellas... i personally think cap'n jazz and american football were wayy better than owen. should have stayed together :( i can never get sick of this album. it's weird that an instrumental song can be so emotional.

  • Thanks for the comment!!! This one isn't entirely instrumental, but it is largely.

Check out AF's "Five Silent Miles" in the video responses if you haven't already and want to hear a great instrumental.

  • This is my favourite song from the album. A perfect example of the wonders of Mike Kinsella

  • Yeah I love this song as well, I was just listening to this album after sleeping for awhile and I just couldn't really sleep anymore so it is ending now and I'm here on youtube listening to it again.

Did you check out my video response? I'm very proud of the "Five Silent Miles" slideshow I did.

  • I hope they play this at my funeral.

    So good.

  • I totally understand the feeling and agree with your comment 100%.

  • greatest emo band of all time.

  • After AF broke up, and before Owen, I remember reading that Mike had started a new project called "Civil War". Does anyone know if anything was ever recorded?

  • I don't know myself. I just heard a few Owen songs myself for the first time on youtube. Pretty good. I am going to have to try and check out that first Owen cd if it sounds similiar to AF.

  • Comment removed

  • So many nostalgic feelings are stirred up with this cd. Fantastic band, amazingly well written songs. good up : D

if you havent already you should check out Cap'n jazz or Owls (other kinsella projects)

  • Yeah I never fully looked into those projects. I really should at some point.

  • if you like american football, definitely check out owen's first cd. it's pretty much an extension of af's full length, but a little more stripped down.

  • all 12 of their songs are timeless, the only cd that I can listen to all the way through. Each songs brings up so many emotions

  • Thanks for commenting. Yeah this album relaxes me and also gets me pretty going too. It's just that good that it hits such a wide spectrum of emotions.

  • Gods.

  • Thanks for uploading this.

I already listened to The whole American football's album... I loved it!

  • So many underrated bands. Listening to bands like AF and Gracer makes me mad that absolute bullshit gets recognition, but most of the best artists are overlooked.

  • for me the perfect example would be p!nks song so what, so annoying, no talent, sounded like she didnt know the words, and the only reason no1 stopped playin it was cus it got stuck in ur head, and bcuz she did like 2 good songs, so they worship her =@

  • That's true. And the worst part is, these great bands never get the recognition they deserve, even after they break up. When my kids, should I have kids, turn fourteen, I'll tell them about bands such as this.

  • Thanks for all the comments. I actually got a pretty decent picture of the inner boooklet. I'll have to work that in soon maybe.

Anyways I uploaded the album version of 'The One with the Tambourine.' I'll probably upload the other two just to spread the word and it is only a three song EP. But no need to hurry things either.

  • great band
