Kids should have some training in how to handle weapons and deal with threats around them. Sure preserving the innocence of "the children" sounds good until some lunatic opens fire in a school and they all huddle on the floor and wait their turn to be shot. Studies have shown that kids raised with weapons and educated in their use are less likely to shoot themselves or another by accident.

Whenever I hear about a 12 year old killing a robber with a shotgun I'm overjoyed.
