I saw this show live a while back - last year, I think. It was amazing. We were very close to the front and far to the side, so it was hard to see the whole stage the way the video shows it - I love how you can see the unison movements and the patterns in the video. Lovely.
Alberta Ballet is premiering a new ballet in May based on Sarah McLachlan's Music. It's titled Fumbling Towards Ecstacy. In one of the clips that I saw floating around in the internet, Sarah got misty eyed when she was shown a short preview during a rehearsal. The current choreographer is really amazing. Their current production is based on Elton John's music.
@bananarific22 Check the ALBERTA BALLET website. It says there that they exclusively sell the soundtrack for the ballet. They also have the DVD of the production with additional footage. DVD is also available on AMAZON just don't know if they have the version with additional backstage footage. Ballet company is based in Calgary Alberta Canada.
The song featured here is the 5th track on the 1991 album Night Ride Home, and there it's titled 'Slouching Towards Bethlehem' and adding then, 'Based on a poem by W.B. Yeats'. 'Fiddle and the Drum' apart from being the name of this current production was first the title of the 9th track on her 1969 album 'Clouds' and something altogether different, sung a cappella. There's a quality recording of a period performance on YouTube - it's screenshot is Joni Mitchell in a green dress. And thank you.
I have been in touch with Classical TV who published this clip and it is the correct clip from the modern ballet 'The Fiddle and The Drum' created by Joni Mitchell in collaboration with choreographer Jean Grand Maitre... It is not an error.
@WildeNotesMusic The ballet is titled "The Fiddle and the Drum" and features several of Joni's great songs and is beautifully performed by the Alberta Ballet. It is a stunning production and available on DVD. Whether you are a fan of Joni, ballet or fine art, you will be captivated by this performance. Highlights include "The Beat of Black Wings", "Passion Play (When All the Slaves are Free)" and "The Three Great Stimulants". Truly astounding!
I saw it last night and was moved, touch and inspired. This is what you get when Govn't subsidizes 30% of Arts. You get 28 company members so totally committed to new inventive fresh groundbreaking art. Art is Life! This is what this evening gave to me. Not like here in the United States where we subsidize our arts orgs with less than 1%. The United States is reduced to it's lowest common denominator. Life here doesn't imitate art. TV here duplicates Life. We are losing.
This performance was so beautiful and touching. The dancers were wonderful and I was touched by the songs and the way Joni put it all together. Alberta Ballet did a wonderful job that was interesting and dramatic. I just loved it! I would love to see it again! Jeanne Rose...Hoping that Joni feels better!
I saw this performance @ the Paramount theater in Seattle a USA debut performance that was absolutely flawless. Joni was scheduled to appear for Q&A with the audience but signs stated at the entry that she had cancelled due to illness...but the show....OMG such incredible dancing and interpretation by the Alberta Ballet Company...If you have the chance to see this performance wherever it lands..I urge you to go...Joni...thank you for making me think even more sensitively about this Creation!
I saw it recently and I must say that it has made a huge difference in the way I think and feel about life, love, and our precious planet....Thank you Joni!

Lovely song, lovely dance. But this is not "The Fiddle & The Drum."
You can hear Joni sing that song here on YouTube. Just search for it by title.

Ottimo balletto. Il disco della Mitchell da cui è tratto il brano mi sembra Niht Ride Home....
