This is such a great song. It is (in my opinion) the high point of the special, really catchy AND lyrically clever. I for one never get tired of this song, it shows how musically strong Mike was. A lost treasure in their catalogue (along with Randy Scouse Git and Circle Sky, two of my other fave monkee tunes)
Hahaha, love Mike's expression at 1:41 - awesome. He looks (well, looked) kind of like Carl Barat from the Libertines - but hotter, of course, and with fantastic 60s sideburns.
Mike was just too ambitious for the show and the band. they wanted to have fun and he wanted the fame and the chance to show off what a great musician he was(still is)
I suppose the clip represents the duality Mike's posessed. While he was a country boy from Texas and pioneered country-rock, he also wrote most of The Monkees psychedelic songs like Daily Nightly, and Writing Wrongs. So here the two Mikes, country and rock, face off in an old west showdown. Great song. Great symbolism.
Not to mention the 'wanted for fraud' sign in the back, since the Monkees were, accurately, criticized as being fake and manufactured, not playing their own instruments, etc.
it just doesn't get much cooler than this. michael nesmith knows what he's doing. and nobody does it better. what a vocal range! he hits notes i could never hope to hit, and he makes them sound like honey. god bless you, michael. sleep well.
What do you mean 'one of the only good parts of the film'!? The entire thing is awesome. Still I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. This is one of the best bits though so we can agree on tha much.
sorry, soxalltheway2007, but only the first two sentences of ur comment are true. therefore, i feel the need to correct the last and undoubtably wrong sentence.
What's better than Mike Nesmith? TWO Mike Nesmiths!

@Dogote82 I'm guessing Nez made it up...love it

@Dogote82 I always thought that "Roogalator" was a reference to the Johnny Rivers song from 1966-67. Could be wrong.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Michael Nesmith usually brought the goods - not this time. Why the four of them went ahead with this mess is a mystery to me.

which is funny because no one said a thing about the boyband craze that his us in the 90's.....
Dogote82 2 years ago
@barkboingfloom This song is his struggle with Don Kirschner. Devil incarnate was running music supervision.

It's almost unreal how they had the technology to do this type of thing back in the 60s.
dbrauer43 3 years ago 3
Someone said the reason Mike did this one was because he was torn between his country roots, and his country rock music he wrote.
SLCPunker101 3 years ago 5

Whenever I see this I'm always thinking that when Mike auditioned for The Monkees, I bet he never thought he'd be doing a duet with himself.
