Both Harry and Tariq are biased and with a clear political and ideological agenda. They are pretending to look for the political disease within Pakistan when the cause or causes lie with the British and the West who were still ruling and controlling (DOMINATING AND CRIPPLING) the country from outside.
Tariq Ali is an atheist and a God and Muslim hater and is not the right person to speak as an expert about Pakistan.
The intro is awful because it's academics doing it...obviously, Ali goes beyond that, but some are just that and that's it. And that's unfortunate. One should never be just anything and that's it.
One of the few public voices that is bold and daring. Has anybody else noticed that the US is the only country that fosters dissidents, its own dissidents? Never heard about a French dissident, or a German one. They all have to leave France and Germany, if they speak up against their governments, it seems. :-(
Tariq's assertion that had Gandhi too had sided with British in their war effort, British probably would not have rewarded Jinnah his demand for Pakistan as a quid pro quo for Jinnah/Muslim League's public support for British war efforts, ignores the most important boost for Pakistan project, especially by the war lord, Churchill who relentlessly worked to get 'at least part for us' in the subcontinent, to be used as their military outpost as a safeguard to counter Soviet Russia.
Socialism in Afghanistan is not exactly dead but might as well should be. The Americans made sure of it by using the mujahideen, Islamic fundamentalists, and the Taliban to erase it. What the Americans did on that Pakistani-Afghan border is pure terrorism.
If this man was a Pakistani-American I would vote for him and his democratic socialist party into government. Since he is a citizen of Great Britain he would be an excellent choice to counter the corrupt Labor and Tories and Lib Dems. I think he could form a coalition of socialist labor(Milliband head of the Labor party calls him a socialist) with the large disenfranchised electorate in the UK.

@emotionalinvalid the dems would never hold a primary in '12 do you realize that would destroy the party for a decade? I wish we had a more left wing candidate too... but we'd need a third party to do it.
Tariqi Ali is one of the most knowlegeable writers and speakers alive. For example, did you hear how he easily and seemingly adlib, makes a literary analogy, the fawning but calculatiing with ulterior motives character Uriah Heep from Charles Dicken's "david copperfield" to that of pre dictator of Pakistan Zia Alhak entertained Butto which led to Bhutto's hanging by Zia. And as most intelligent socialists he knows the tragedy of Pakistan is because political class did nothing for Pakistanis.
India's loss of losing it's Muslim intelligentsia is incalculable.
It's Ismaili, Bohra, Ahmediyya, Parsi, Sikh, Afghan, Baloch, Punjab, Sindh, Jew, Christian, Kashmiri and Jat trade & allied communities were India's 'Silk Rd. Connection' to the rest of Asia.
Of course the oil & gas boom of the rest of the Middle-East, Eastern Europe and Silk Rd. countries of Central Asia was not forseen back in the times, otherwise India would be entrenched in said areas whcih is it's natural backfround.
In talking about the formation of Pakistan, as expected from a socialist theorist, he left out some very important social forces. Most prominantly, he left out the role of Hindu militancy penetrated into the Congress party and Gandhi's so-called Ram Rajya vision alienating secular leaders like Jinnah which worked as social forces led to the division of British India.

I disagree about the "Thank you gift" part. Lord Mountbatten tried his utmost hard not to make the state of Pakistan. The King-Emperor didn't wanted British-India to divide, neither did his gov't.
Actually many high-ranking people in the British intelligence community (MI6 and co) did support the creation of a Pakistani state as a counterweight between the linking up of the USSR and a socialist-leaning independent India (led by Nehru).
In the public sphere, the most prominent supporter was NWFP governor Sir Olaf Caroe, who valued Pashtun collaboration with the League against the activities of the Khan brothers (Abdul Ghaffar Khan and his brother Dr Khan Sahib)
A couple of weeks ago, I completed reading "Pakistan: Between the Mosques and the Military" by Hussain Haqanni, the current Paksitani Ambassador in USA. Haqanni who was a former student leader of a rightist student group, advised Jatoi, Shariff and Benazir. He has been accused by Tariq Ali as having been a US agent.
And you have Tariq Ali a self-avowed leftist offering his analysis of Pakistan.
Guess what! Both Haqanni and Tariq Ali independently concur why Pakistan is in such deep mess.
The way Pakistan have been obeying USA since 1947 it must be given the status of a sovereign US state & US must implement its rules of justice equality & rule of law. Only then can Pakistan come out of the financial crisis its caught in & be able to return all the loans US/IMF/W.B have loaned so far. Political filth trying to destroy Pakistan must positively be kicked out & people will at all cost pay whatever is due in terms of loan. All steps of destroying a common man must be banned at once.
Pakistan is India's! At the onset the Pakis funded terrorists in Kashmir even though THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF KASHMIRIS VOTED FOR KASHMIR TO REMAIN INDIAN.
India could have destroyed Pakistan 1965, they took Lahore, but the US forced them not to.

Do you know anything about Indian history? If you did you would know that Jinna and the muslims (not the British) were entirely to blame for partition and thus all of the devastation that resulted from it.
If is a fact that Kashmiris voted to remain Indian citizens, but the pakis thought they knew better and sent their terrorists there to wreak havoc.
The US needs to stop funding pakistan, look how much good it has done, they are still the most savage country in the world.
the kashmiris never had a vote in the partition, you hindu extremist!
it was that kashmir, which was largely islamic, had a maharadja who was hindu and he decided to go with india!
i dare india to hold a monitored election among kashmiris today and we will see what the outcome will be! No one will choose to be with plague infested, rat worshipping, mosque destroying and children burning hindu nationalists extremists!
kashmiris have been brutally oppressed by india and thats why they resist, not because of pakistan! in fact, pakistan has offered to give its part of kashmir up so india would do the same , in order to form an independent state called kashmir...................and.....................india refused! instead, kashmir has been put under martial law with curfews every day, by india!
Hey, don't you have to get back to fucking your baby sister? That's fine according to the law of your blessed pedophile prophet.
The "resistance" in Kashmir is nothing but paki (not Kashmiri) invading terrorists.
Pakistan tried to take Kashmir, they failed and were utterly humiliated, the Indians almost took la whore, but the pakis begged the US president to stop them. I'm sure the rat worshippers will welcome another attempt from you, then they can burn you alive.
dear, indians i think u all with ur intellectuals never ever have tried to cool ur minds. ur view that "The "resistance" in Kashmir is nothing but paki (not Kashmiri) invading terrorists". i just raise only one question a straight forward question Wud ever india ( the Rising superpower ) dare to hold a free and fair referendum under united nations mediators and ask kiashmiries their right of selfdetermination?

Oh poor you, oppressed scion of capitalism. Do you enjoy the computer and the internet. If so, then you are a beneficiary of capitalism. Both were private endeavours, created without the need for government diktat. Capitalism is simply the expression of the popular will. The market provides for people if they want something. Mises destroyed socialism with his calculation question. Grow up. The same advice could apply to Tariq Ali, the consummate pseudo-academic bore.
@Bastiat90 The Internet, computers, information processing, lasers, satellites, transistors, these are textbook examples of creativity and production in the public sector. For thirty years the internet was designed, developed, and funded primarily in the public sector, in university research departments, the Pentagon, then the National Science Foundation.
Google the terms ARPANET or NASA for an insight into the public funding and development of advanced technology that ends up in private hands.
@Bastiat90 I think it was so military bases could communicate with one another. Diktat I suppose. Here's an amusing quote for you from Dwayne Andreas CEO of Archer Daniels Midland one of the largest agricultural processors in the world.
"There isn't one grain of anything in the world that is sold in a free market. Not one! The only place you see a free market is in the speeches of politicians. People who are not in the Midwest do not understand that this is a socialist country."
So why criticise a free market if you don't believe one has ever existed? It's like criticising the tooth fairy for not leaving some coins under your pillow.
Tim Berners Lee didn't invent the internet (or world wide web) because the government told him to. Einstein didn't formulate his theories because the government told him to, nor did Newton, Galileo etc. Steve Jobs didn't invent because the government told him to.
@Bastiat90 Tim Lee didn't "invent" the internet, didn't you even bother to read my first comment? He's credited with founding the World Wide Web in 1989, years after ARPANET and the creation of the internet. He was working for MIT, which for most of its life was Pentagon funded. He wasn't subjected to market discipline. It's questionable as to whether profit, riches or customer demand motivated Newton or Einstein, they spent their lives in academia.
@Bastiat90 It's a shame you never bothered to read Albert Einstein's essay entitled "Why Socialism?". You wouldn't have been so quick to namecheck him.
"The instability in capital leads to increasingly severe depressions. Unlimited competition leads to a huge waste of labor, and to that crippling of the social consciousness of individuals I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, oriented toward social goals".
Where did I say monetary gain is the prime mover of human activity? Profit motives are not exclusively money related. You're very bad at dodging the issue.

I'm not sure why the a US educational institution has invited a terrorist sympathizer with whom to have a "conversation with history." What exactly does he have to contribute?
He opposes the U.S. occupation of Iraq. So do most Americans. The Iraqis have the right to try to free themselves of an occupying army. This comes from an American.
the solution he cited : get India, Pakistan, Russia, Iran to set up a socialist government in Afghanistan. i dont see that happening in a 100 years the way things are.
..... Therefore, since humans are innately fallible so are all their systems... secular and non-secular. A human-less world is a saner world; but that would be self-defeating.
you seem to be forgetting one key element all those ruler had and have, the authoritarian and totalitarian method of dealing with those who don't simply "believe" or choose to have "faith" in their all-powerful and all merciful leaders, atheists and skeptics were put to death as well because they chose to question instead of blindly obeying and what is god but a "Celestial dictator" in the words of Hitchens who monitors everything you do and if you disobey you will be jailed for all eternity ;)
and for the record the Nazis had belts with "In God we trust" engraved and the centuries of discrimination of the Jews i.e Medieval Inquisitions Pogroms of Czar Russia and killings of Jews in Germany in 19 century was because the Jews sentenced their "Savior" to death which whipped those religious people into a frenzy so great as to murder people based on an ancient misogynistic egotistical and primitive and barbaric text
Secularism, when accompanied by rationalism and critical thinking, will almost never result in people like Pol Pot or Hitler.
Secularism alone, yes, that's no guarantee that the government will behave ethically or reasonably.
However, secularists acknowledge human fallibility and thus, the fallibility of human government and ideology. Religious belief claims divine knowledge and an infallible source; it has no excuse therefore to ever be in error.
Indians became muslims when muslims were there. When britishers took over, they became BLACK BRITISHERs. As I said before, Indians look like growing cause WEST is using them against ISLAM and CHINIA. As a muslim our belief is that India once again will become a MUSLIM state. Insha Allah it is not far away.

I heard and read the comments. It surprised me that they all are talking about India as if she is providing something new to the world. We all keep on forgetting that India was once ruled by Afghans, Iranians, Turks and before all of them Arabs. Not only for 100 years but 1000 years. Yes we are loosing at this particular point but not cause of India. India switchs her loyality as quickly as a prisitute changes her customers. The whole world is against islam but we will survive, insha Allah

Reading comments of a few pakis here reinforces general sentiment that it's typical of a paki to blame everybody else except himself for his troubles.
Read Arundhati Suzzane Roy? Which sane person in his right mind will listen to that moron. She is a typical paki born in wrong country. you can have her and make her one of your 72 houris for all that most Indians care about her :))
can u explain Gujrat episode & any answer to the rising farmer suicide rates and what abt recent decision of Dehli High court..?This is not what Gandhi wanted it to be? i leave the question of same sex marriage on the matter of choice.. but still any answers on involvement of Valla B Patel in the murder of gandhi... who moved security out of Birla Bhavan on that Jan day,,? v `ve a history which is twisted.. why to abuse each other.. lets stay focused and give our kids a better tomorrow
I agree democracy is wonderful system but must read what arundhati roy has to say about it.. and democracy is also valid on the other side of valley where no plebiscite has ever held...we have our tribal regions but what about Bihaar.. and who flaunted money in the recent election.. which type of secular country it is where people contest in the name of religion... it might be a dysfunctional state but a significant proportion of your population sleeps hungry as well..
..u might call me a tratior as well but for your information i m a Pakistani whose life and whose death is for this country but i am a realist,, as welll.. and i need to save my country and i need to save my generation from taking refuge into siilly emotinalism and false history.... dada rocks...
Pakistan is a dysfunctional state, i dont agree...well it might not function good but still.. its better than many states... you said you had democracy..
. it was only when they shot down a plane called U2 that the US congress discovered taht CIA is paying some countries and country heads for maintaining its cold war security
Dont talk bad about Tariq Ali.he is a historian get out of silly emotionalism and look fwd.we must learn our history so that we can get up . we are a nation of wonderful people...so we can get up...its very easy to call him traitor but ever wonder k yeh traitor hum log hi kion peda kertay hain kia hum nay theka lia hay....
. thats why we had Russia coming.. We faced them.. my foot... it was US weapon and our dictators rule which helped US fight them... the months after the arrival of US stinger missiles in the region that the mujahideen had russia on its knees...remember it was US money and weapon and if u still are reading this reply.. let me tell u Israel was also sending in the money and our Mar e momin Mard e HAqq was sleeping with Israel over it because US wanted it...
Our borders... our borders are the result of our failed foreign policy.. we brainwashed people first for Jehad against communist and now they think the infidels are those who are dont beleive in God whereas they dont know that infidels are those who are dictated by foriegn policy in this stance...Soviet Union threatened us because we had a funny asshole named FM Ayub Khan who sent US spy air crafts from buddaber to their country for his personal gain..
Dear SZ130, your religious sentiment and loyalty appreciated and dada rocks.. your highhandedness is fake
SZ130.. the faultline is your knowledge about History.
India was not invading us in 1965, it was we who started the sick joke....about 1971... it was the circumstances.. still it was when FM maneckshaw walked into Indira s office to invade rest of the country, she refused him after consulting the cabinet. and Kargil.. u know the result...
when america was founded wasnt their slavery did women had rights did african had rights i dont think so it tookl them 300 years my freind now if u bring up india lol just election doesnt mean there is democracyindia just hold their elections thats it read about the movements of independence within that country their media is just good at blaming it on pakistan and make pakistan look so influential in india as pakistan as usa lol

India to gained indpendence at the same time and it's flourihsing democracy so the nonsene of youra apropos it takes time it doesn;t happen over night remains nonsense..
I cnt agree more with you! Its sad that Tariq ali is so little known in Pakistan while a person like Zaid Hamid has humongous support especially from the youth.
Ali, appeared on Australian TV with Daniel Piper [ from a ''Washington Think Tank'' ] just before the US went into Iraq, they discussed the US rational and likely out comes , Tariqs' appraisal and forcasted outcomes of the situation Mr Piper scorned. However time has shown Tarqs' pedictions were very accurate. particularly regarding the diffuculties the US would encounter exiting the place.
You should make him your president/prime minister what ever it is you all follow now.He has a great deal of understanding, will change Pakistan and Indo-Pak relations as well.
I saw him speak recently in Liverpool, and although I disagreed with some aspects of his anaylsis of recent economic events, I found his appraisal of Pakistans situation extraordinarily illuminating.

it was that kashmir, which was largely islamic, had a maharadja who was hindu and he decided to go with india!
i dare india to hold a monitored election among kashmiris today and we will see what the outcome will be! No one will choose to be with plague infested, rat worshipping, mosque destroying and children burning hindu nationalists extremists!

you heard wrong, you cunt! so stop telling lies!
kashmiris have been brutally oppressed by india and thats why they resist, not because of pakistan! in fact, pakistan has offered to give its part of kashmir up so india would do the same , in order to form an independent state called kashmir...................and.....................india refused! instead, kashmir has been put under martial law with curfews every day, by india!

He is real Wanker. He has biased view of history. Muslim League and Muslims had opposed England at every front in world war II.
Muslims and Muslim League even started agitation movement to protect Muslim Religious Center (Khalifat-e-Usmania)
Turkey was supporting Germans in world war II and Indian Muslims were supporting Germany.
People like TARIQ are pseudo intellectuals who gain fame pretending different and unconventional.

I am glad there are left wing writers and thinkers like Tariq questioning invasive capitalistic and arrogant atitudes.
ravelimex 2 years ago 26
Oh poor you, oppressed scion of capitalism. Do you enjoy the computer and the internet. If so, then you are a beneficiary of capitalism. Both were private endeavours, created without the need for government diktat. Capitalism is simply the expression of the popular will. The market provides for people if they want something. Mises destroyed socialism with his calculation question. Grow up. The same advice could apply to Tariq Ali, the consummate pseudo-academic bore.
Bastiat90 3 months ago
@Bastiat90 The Internet, computers, information processing, lasers, satellites, transistors, these are textbook examples of creativity and production in the public sector. For thirty years the internet was designed, developed, and funded primarily in the public sector, in university research departments, the Pentagon, then the National Science Foundation.
Google the terms ARPANET or NASA for an insight into the public funding and development of advanced technology that ends up in private hands.
Alimantado91 3 months ago
Was the internet invented by government diktat or a private individual looking to maximise the efficiency of his work?
Bastiat90 3 months ago
@Bastiat90 I think it was so military bases could communicate with one another. Diktat I suppose. Here's an amusing quote for you from Dwayne Andreas CEO of Archer Daniels Midland one of the largest agricultural processors in the world.
"There isn't one grain of anything in the world that is sold in a free market. Not one! The only place you see a free market is in the speeches of politicians. People who are not in the Midwest do not understand that this is a socialist country."
Very drole.
Alimantado91 3 months ago
So why criticise a free market if you don't believe one has ever existed? It's like criticising the tooth fairy for not leaving some coins under your pillow.
Bastiat90 3 months ago
Tim Berners Lee didn't invent the internet (or world wide web) because the government told him to. Einstein didn't formulate his theories because the government told him to, nor did Newton, Galileo etc. Steve Jobs didn't invent because the government told him to.
Bastiat90 3 months ago
@Bastiat90 Tim Lee didn't "invent" the internet, didn't you even bother to read my first comment? He's credited with founding the World Wide Web in 1989, years after ARPANET and the creation of the internet. He was working for MIT, which for most of its life was Pentagon funded. He wasn't subjected to market discipline. It's questionable as to whether profit, riches or customer demand motivated Newton or Einstein, they spent their lives in academia.
Try reading the history before commenting.
Alimantado91 3 months ago
@Bastiat90 It's a shame you never bothered to read Albert Einstein's essay entitled "Why Socialism?". You wouldn't have been so quick to namecheck him.
"The instability in capital leads to increasingly severe depressions. Unlimited competition leads to a huge waste of labor, and to that crippling of the social consciousness of individuals I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, oriented toward social goals".
Alimantado91 3 months ago
What do his political views have to do with his inventiveness?
Bastiat90 3 months ago
@Bastiat90 They also didn't do it because the goverment did not tell them to.
TheSpiritOfTheTimes 3 months ago
That's an absurd argument. Would you refrain from killing someone because nobody told you not to do it?
Bastiat90 3 months ago
@Bastiat90 People are not motivated purely out of monetary gain. What you said is an inane banal talking point.
TheSpiritOfTheTimes 3 months ago
Where did I say monetary gain is the prime mover of human activity? Profit motives are not exclusively money related. You're very bad at dodging the issue.

A secular world is a sane world
BUDA20 2 years ago 31
Not True...
Stalin was a secularist;
Pol Pot was a secularist;
Napoleon was an imperialist secularist;
Hitler was a secularist;
..... Therefore, since humans are innately fallible so are all their systems... secular and non-secular. A human-less world is a saner world; but that would be self-defeating.
:)

you seem to be forgetting one key element all those ruler had and have, the authoritarian and totalitarian method of dealing with those who don't simply "believe" or choose to have "faith" in their all-powerful and all merciful leaders, atheists and skeptics were put to death as well because they chose to question instead of blindly obeying and what is god but a "Celestial dictator" in the words of Hitchens who monitors everything you do and if you disobey you will be jailed for all eternity ;)
SayocKali1 2 years ago
and for the record the Nazis had belts with "In God we trust" engraved and the centuries of discrimination of the Jews i.e Medieval Inquisitions Pogroms of Czar Russia and killings of Jews in Germany in 19 century was because the Jews sentenced their "Savior" to death which whipped those religious people into a frenzy so great as to murder people based on an ancient misogynistic egotistical and primitive and barbaric text
SayocKali1 2 years ago
What do we mean by secularism?
Secularism, when accompanied by rationalism and critical thinking, will almost never result in people like Pol Pot or Hitler.
Secularism alone, yes, that's no guarantee that the government will behave ethically or reasonably.
However, secularists acknowledge human fallibility and thus, the fallibility of human government and ideology. Religious belief claims divine knowledge and an infallible source; it has no excuse therefore to ever be in error.
