I haven't really got the time to listen closely and write an in-depth comment, but I want you to know that I totally support you in all of this, I enjoyed your ASL vids because they gave a new depth to my JoCo addiction, that's basically how i found you, but i've always admired your charisma, even though i simply saw you making gestures. Hear-ing you back that up with clear vocal ability really is something I enjoy, and for that I wish you good luck with your future endeavours.
I realize, as you say, people change and mature, and you received negative feedback from Deaf people, but that could have been motivation to progress and expand your skills and knowledge rather than give up. Because of your enthusiasm and talents I see your decision not to pursue this any longer as a loss to the many Deaf people and kids who may have benefited from your involvement in the Deaf community, as a career or socially. We've enjoyed your ASL videos, and you'll clearly b successful
I'm surprised to learn that you're not fluent in ASL. It does leave me with the impression that you misrepresented yourself. On the other hand, it's all the more impressive that your ASL song interpretations were so amazing. I thought you were dedicated to the Deaf community but realize now you were just having fun. Is that disappointing? Yes. My son is Deaf and it was so neat to see him enjoy music through your videos. I don't understand why you would leave this behind when you're so gifted
Ok, I guess ignore my previous comment (I should have listened to the whole video first :) Anyways, now that you have given more information on this 'change' I am glad that you are stopping since you are offending the Deaf Community, and when hearing people get the wrong idea of the Deaf Community, that doesnt help anyone. Its hard when people do not learn Sign Language correctly, and just try to jump into the Culture.
I highly doubt you'll see this, but I want to say this. When I first saw your video of signing you inspired me to try to do a video in signing, to help me practice with it. When I watched your first video, I felt that you gave up on something, but I may have been wrong. You looked like you were having fun doing what you were, and I wish you would continue to do it.
@riay388 Oh, you're totally right! I missed it because it's not tagged by YT as a video response. Not sure how to change that but I'll add a link to yours to this video as an annotation. Apologies! :)
I'm really impressed that you're taking the input of the Deaf Culture so seriously. I know that I've struggled with what might offend and what is appropriate. I've met people that love to see people enjoy music and try to share it in a way that they can relate to (my teacher), and people that are offended that one might think that they'd feel left out or deprived and that they don't want anything to do with it. ASL is beautiful language! Yet, language is always difficult to defend as art :)
Honey, just do what you love, and love what you do! You are such an inspiring person (to me you seriously are!) and I think we're all proud to be your mates. Love you captain!
I can relate to having a skill but wanting to explore other areas. I think it’s important to do what you’re interested in. At the same time, I’d suggest that you make a video for yourself and then one people ask for. The give and take will help build a community. Also, don't feel too guilty about the discrepancy over ASL; I’m sure you did more good than harm. So many people have never met anyone who can sign, and this opened their eyes to something new.
@indigogirl567 But if people are opened up to something new in the wrong way, that does do more harm then good. You heard him say that Deaf people were offended by his work.
How about "Philographers"? Now, about that video. . . I often sign music as I listen to it, and I enjoy it, but I don't sing in sign for the camera. I would be way too self-conscious.
@Sra33thousand If you don't have a background behind your captions, you can put one on. I have a black background behind my captions, and I have no problem with the box on his shirt.
Unless you already knew how to do that and didn't want to. (You can also move the captions so that the shirt box isn't behind them.)
@purplewowies Hey thanks! I didn't know I could do that, I'm going to have to look. I have noticed some captions have bars, I thought it was something the person who uploaded the video does, and not something I can do.
@CaptainValor@CaptainValor We can actually change the color, so actually if everyone understands how to, you don't need to coordinate your clothing with the color of the font. @Sra33thousand
Our experiences within a second language community will shape and mold us in ways either subtle or profound. Through these experiences we can help to make the world a richer place, continue to strive for equity and understanding for all.
Everyone has an opinion, and those of us posting here aren’t shy to share. Let me know what you think. If you hate what I’ve said, or completely disagree, please say WHY – you have a lot more power to influence when you explain yourself.
I find it interesting that often there is the feeling of ‘expectation’ that because we chose to learn sign language, we now have an obligation, or duty, to use it, and use it explicitly in a way that one group dictates. Please keep in mind, that whether a person chooses to use an acquired language, the result of learning it in the first place continues on. Each newcomer to language has experienced a broader understanding of the world, the people in it and the diversity of humanity. Cont..
I’d really like to understand this perspective better.
CV aside, some other food for thought…For those of us who learn sign language, we may enter the community, serve it for a time, (or never serve it at all). We may stay involved, or we may bow out. We have the same rights of those people who take a spoken language minor/major. Cont...
Why or why not? If some of the outcomes of CV’s videos have been positive (and let’s face it, some members of the Deaf community appreciate his work, hearing people have had their interest piqued, and the videos have got people talking and raised awareness of the potential uses of ASL in the public domain) does it really matter his motives? For those of you who believe his videos have had more of a negative impact, please explicitly state why and how? cont...
To all those that say Captain Valor’s videos are culturally insensitive, may I ask why and how? Is it the fact that Captain Valor is not an interpreter, his performances are fallible, or that his motives were for art, enjoyment and entertainment rather than access for the Deaf community? Is it motives then, that make his videos inappropriate and culturally insensitive? Do people like Kmklined and Songsinsign (who are qualified interpreters) cop the same castigation? cont...
I am surprised by the amount of comments saying that you should keep doing something even though it offends people. I, for one, am very impressed with your reason for stopping the ASL videos. It shows tremendous humility and cultural sensitivity. There are so many times that people from a dominant culture are told it´s totally okay to become representatives of another, and that they shouldn´t worry about their cultural transgressions because they´re just "students," etc. Thank you!
To be honest, I was really quite skeptical about this whole new direction for your channel. I had thoroughly enjoyed your previous ASL videos and was waiting for some new ones when that video was uploaded so it was quite the surprise. The idea of unsubscribing did come up, but after watching this video, I am intrigued. I want to know where you are going with this and if it was the right decision to move in this new direction. I just wanted to say goodluck and I'll be watching your videos :)
I think it's so great how far you've come with ASL, but would love to see more of you regardless of video content. Please leave all of your signing videos up, though, they are very helpful. I've just completed Sign 1 at University of North Texas, and I'm really excited to continue with it.
Thank you for stopping sign language videos. I hope the old ones stop showing up on my recommended videos. Sometimes it's better to go back to your day job. :)
@badmario And thank you for putting down one of the more intelligent entertainments on youtube. Lord knows that youtube Poop and people doing their own horrid interpretations of songs and sittin' on a toilet are so much more intellectual and artistic than CaptianValor's ASL music videos. Note the tinge of sarcasim. I believe that Stephen's ASL vids were not only entertaining but inspiring, And gave the Deaf Community a first ' glance' at music as a tangible thing.
@TheBoochan82 But there are lots of people who are better at ASL that don't get his kind of recognition. I don't know why it's him that's "giving the Deaf Community a 'glance' at music," especially since what he was doing wasn't truly ASL. It was fun to watch, and it made people want to learn ASL. But linguistically, it was the equivalent of singing a song in broken Spanish. badmario didn't say anything about YTPs, and he's subscribed to a lot of people who use true, full ASL. cont
For example, seanberdy, codawann, allyballybabe, ewitteborg, and tiffanythill. Stephen's ASL videos aren't the most intelligent or the best out there. As an example of my own, I consider Tiffany's interpretation of "Perfect" much more inspiring than any of Stephen's ASL vids. Even though I don't know all the signs she used, I still got the meaning loud and clear.
Stephen's got pretty good facial expressions, but his ASL (by comparison) is atrocious.
I was too late to comment in the last video, but I wanted to say I'm disappointed that you're not going to do ASL videos anymore, but after watching this one, I understand and respect your choice. I tweeted you ages ago that you're a major reason I decided to go into ASL as a career and study to become an Interpreter. I won't stop watching, I find this change refreshing, you seem like a very clever guy and I like the chance to know more about the guy who gave me my inspiration!
First, I just want to say I love your ASL videos. I respect your honesty on everything you said about the responses to your videos from the Deaf Community. Second, I'm not sure what to call the group. Someone mentioned 'Crew,' which would be a cool idea. I also think 'Valor' is a word you don't hear a lot. To have that word in the name would be cool. Maybe something like 'Valor's Real' or 'Today's Valor.' Third, I would try to post a video signing to the song, but I think it's a bit late.
I'm from the deaf community, I don't find it offensive at all. I've enjoyed several videos that CaptainValor have made. If he wish to change and find something new then it is his decision to do so. I have no expectation for it. Please don't be delusion to thinks there are such community agrees altogether. We are clearly an individualism(if that's the right word) in and out of this community.
I wish I could do the challenge, but I'm just now hearing about it, and I suspect you'll be posting the next video soon, so I hope there'll be another challenge on that one! I love the idea and I love songsigning. I saw your Bohemian Rhapsody rendition months ago and loved it. I'm interested to see where these discussions will go.
I'm starting off by saying that I really loved your previous videos. I am not great at signing (yet), but I do plan on becoming an interpreter. The way that you presented them was as appealing as the signing itself in most cases. I am disappointed that you are not continuing them, but I understand, at least philisophically, the need for change and exploration and community.
As it stands, I plan to tentatively watch your new videos and see where they lead. I hope it is somewhere inspiring.
Cool Challenge and I can't wait to see what it comes up. Response: I think you did a fine job of doing the videos before. Lighthouse and Re: Your Brains are our family favorites. I think that many different cultures appreciated your talent so don't sell yourself short. I think the name you call us should represent the many faces we wear.... your fans range from hearing to Deaf, Geek to the normal person (shutters)
First, I think that because you are the "Captain" we should be called something in relation to a "Crew". However I cannot think of a fitting adjective at this time. Second, I am sorry to hear that your ASL videos came with some discontent from viewers. I think they were unique and expressive and incredible. You are a major part of the reason why I am personally studying ASL now. I cannot wait to follow you into your next adventure. :)
Sorry guys, but Y'allinites and all its variations just sound really dumb to me. If you live in the South, then 'y'all' is just something that people say. It has nothing to do with who Captain Valor is, who we are, or anything he or we discuss.
I just wanted to comment on you feeling guilty. Please don't.
I am hearing. My brother is deaf. Your ASL videos (especially the JoCo stuff) gave us something special. It gave me the chance to share some of my favorite music with my baby brother. It helped us bond over something I never thought we could share.
He thought they were great. So at least one person in the deaf community didn't think you were doing anything wrong in making them.
CaraMarinara, You're absolutely right. I'm a hearing person who was raised in a deaf community as my parents are both hearing impaired, and I see on a daily basis how critical a select few can be, and how appreciative others can be to new things. Stephen, I really enjoyed the ASL videos you made but I also enjoyed your other work as well. I've checked out your show on badphilosophy and usually find myself enamored in the topics discussed. Keep up the good work, and I vote "Wings of Valor" :)
Jumping through the comments, I see a lot of good name suggestions. Y'allinites is plainly popular, but several commenters specifically asked you to stop saying "Y'all," so that may not be the best choice for inclusive community. I like the notion of using the fact that you're "Captain Valor" to set a theme, but "Soldiers" and "Brigade" sound too militant to me. How about the "Valor Crew," or just "Crew" for short? Every member of a crew is important, which emphasizes the community feel.
@JukeboxJedi I think it's a bit pretentious of people who voluntarily come to see someone's videos to demand that he change the manner of speech that he's used to and comfortable with just because they don't like how he talks. Y'all don't like it, y'all don't have to watch his videos. 'nuff said.
@madinno Personally, I quite agree with you. I don't think CaptainValor should stop saying Y'all just because a bunch of people commented that they don't like it. I was just pointing out that choosing something including Y'all as a name for a community which includes people who don't like being addressed as Y'all, and felt strongly enough to post to that effect, would probably alienate those people. Maybe that's not a problem; you can't please all the people all the time.
You could call us scruffy looking nerf herders if you wanted. I think whatever you pick will just end up sticking. My question is why do you want to put a name to the community?
I understand the appeals, made for and of, the naming, and do not object to the idea. A moniker can engender a sense of community; it also creates a delineation between the 'us' and the 'them'. It can also set the tone of the community, so caution may be warranted.
Your southern affectation suggest Y'alltubers though.
@cousinbb Unsure how much silence or deafness, etc. will have to do with the larger community in the end, and due to the fact that this is to be a dialogue between CaptainValor and the community, it wouldn't contribute much if we were "silent". Simply my opinion. Good thoughts though.
@Sasukelover31 I'm sorry, but did you even get the point about Deaf Culture that he just made in this video?! He just said that it was never his goal to portray the Deaf Community and now you're suggesting that a bunch of moslty hearing people with no affiliation to the Deaf use the name 'Deaf Community'?! Don't mean to be rude or offend you, but I think your suggestion is really inappropriate.
I think you might benefit from a bit of a sign-language music break; it'll give you some perspective on it all. However, please come back to it eventually. Even if it's not perfect, I consider it to be more of an art form, like dancing is an interpretation of music. I'm a west coast swing dancer, and while my dancing probably doesn't accurately represent really-awesome dancing, it's a great method of expression.
2. I'm here because of the JoCo connection (ps. still waiting for Mandlebrot Set 8-) 8-)
3. While I understand the Deaf community's frustration, you were always clear that you were a hearing student learning ASL and doing videos for fun, so...
@SPimpernel1 My teacher said the same thing. Although the videos aren't perfect, the facial expressions are brilliant and facial expressions are the most important point in the language.
I'm with Direness don't let anyone tell you that you did something wrong. While I can understand the reaction of some of the Deaf community's responses but you were a student learning ASL, so you had a students veiw on it. Like anyone else learning a language, you had to learn your way. As for your challange ~ I'm gonna go with Morphesque and say 'Crew'
Definitely do not let those trolls bully you into feeling guilty. You're a student who choose to bring something fun & expressive to the table with what you were learning, & it helped you in learning ASL & INSPIRED so many others to take up this ASL. Many ASL students are so wooden & dreary first learning the language, & the videos helped them understand that expression is essential. But don't feel like you OWE anything to anyone if you were doing the best you could with the level you were at.
You know, I can understand part of Deaf reaction to the videos, because the Deaf are constantly assaulted with misunderstandings regarding ASL as their language. I understand this. But some members can be very vocal and ready to JUMP on ANYTHING content related that's created by ASL students, and to be discouraging & small minded in how they're interpreting/reacting to what has been presented. This is THEIR PROBLEM that they choose to be that way, not yours.
Pertaining to what you want to call us, I feel like things like that usually happen by accident. You shouldn't force them. Totally off topic, but what do you think of the SOPA bill? Do you think it will actually come about?
@ProudSciFiGeekGirl It's the latest attempt to sneak toxic regulation of the Internet into the books. It will fail simply because we're talking about it. I'm confident of that.
LOL I really like "Y'allinites!" That's clever! In the age old tradition of a Captain, I'd like to ask permission to come on board! LOL Love the new format...love having some videos in my subscriptions that have substance. Keep it up!
Considering that you keep referring to spaghetti that you are throwing at the wall, we very well could be that which you are hoping to get to stick. If you get my meaning?
I would totally be on board with the Valorians idea. It sounds kinda like an alien race from the Star Trek universe, but that would almost be fitting. You said in your other video that you wanted to do something in a way that it hasn't yet been done and go places that you haven't yet been, which reminded me of Star Trek (To boldly go where no man has gone before... I know I'm a huge nerd, but I'm okay with that.) I love that you want to name this community!
I was editing my list of subscriptions and this one is definitely a keeper. I am excited to see what you come up with. I believe that anybody trying to learn a new language, find a way into the culture and experience the community should be commended. If you're not a professional from the beginning is really irrelevant. You should be commended for trying to broaden your horizons. I'll keep watching
I like these new videos, but you might want to watch the length of each video you make. I know sometimes a topic just takes a while to talk about and break down, but some people get bored with videos like this when the max out or go over about 7-8 minutes
I miss the other videos. Sorry. But i have friends to talk to. I go to Youtube for entertainment not conversations. And since I am in a ASL club I found your videos before to be really entertaining and educational. These bore me. So I'm gonna go ahead and unsubscribe. But hope this whole thing goes well for you :)
The first name I thought of would be the Valorians. Similar to the Valordictorians, but a bit shorter and also pretty awesome. I just saw both of your VLogs...fantastic! In regards to how you introduced ASL as expression to some hearing people, I think you should give yourself some more credit. I know when I took asl, we talked about your videos in class. I am not really keen on your challenge, however, because I always preferred the Jonathan Coulton performances. Lastly, congratulations.
ok so I am lame and just read through all the other comments to see if i liked the sound of any cohort identifiers. So far my favourites are Valordictorians and The Knights of Valor. My only thought was Torrenauts but a play-off of your last name instead of your youtube name might be kind of random.
@katrina4president Also I love the new direction of your videos. I think anyone of intelligence creating an open dialogue between intelligent people is a worthwhile enterprise. You could have stopped making videos altogether. I for one am glad you didn't. Also I don't think I can accept the challenge as I only know Australian Sign language which is quite different from American. But cannot wait to see it and may have to make up for it in the next one :)
Oh Wow. Just Wow. On so many levels. First, thank you. Second, your decision makes a lot more sense now that you've explained it. My jump cutty thing was honestly just me being silly with my nonexistent camera skills. You're awesome. I think you're stuck with me as a viewer.
Just to respond on the comments you made about MrsFrizzyHairs video: What she said kind of relates to me. I was a tiny bit familiar with the deaf culture, and kind of stumbled upon your videos. It, and some other things too, inspired me to want to learn Dutch Sign Language as an extra to the study I'm doing now. I am currently studying Physical Therapy, and I would love to help deaf people too. I love your signing videos, and I'm sticking around for sure to see more of your vlogs.
I'm a bit saddened that the deaf community is offended by your ASL videos. Quite frankly, I found them inspirational. I'm one of those who stumbled across them accidentally (I think Blue Sunny Day was the first one I saw), and it prompted me to not only go and research more about ASL and deafness, but also got me thinking about perhaps learning ASL myself. Ambitious, perhaps, but I love to learn new things. So at least one of us was inspired. I think that makes them worth the effort.
I love that idea, but.... Party in the USA is not my favorite performance of yours... Hah. Now, Queen. I sign that song every time it comes on!
Again, I have to commend you on all the changes you've made and especially on you wanting to respect Deaf Culture. I am currently an ASL student. I want to become an interpreter and I never even took it from the Deaf view point that it could be offensive. I also love that you think of your videos more of an art form than as a translation.
Thank you so much for this. I understand your perspective a lot better now. I was on the side of, "Ehh, I subscribed for the ASL vids, I'm going to stay around only because I'm too lazy to unsub right now." Hearing now about how it was from your side of the screen makes me rethink my opinion of this new direction. I will definitely stick around and see where you're going with this, because it absolutely has the potential to be something great. Oh, and don't rush the naming process...
About these new videos, however, they mostly bring to mind Bad Philosophy. When I first got into your ASL videos, I started checking out your podcast as well. I tried very hard for months to become a part of the Bad Philosophy universe, with no success. After a while, I just gave up on it. So, to be honest, I'll probably watch a few of these new videos and then fade off. *shrug* If they keep having content related to deaf culture, I might stick around a while longer. We'll see.
First, I wanted to thank you. I had taken a semester of ASL in college, but then graduated and couldn't continue through the school. After a 5 year break, your videos inspired me to start learning ASL again, and I now regularly go to deaf coffee nights and the like, and I'm trying to be a part of the deaf community. So, thanks for that.
I also think it's great that you did a lot of your ASL videos for geek songs. Deaf geeks kinda get the forgotten a lot, it seems.
In response to the negativity coming from the Deaf culture, don't let it get you down. 1) There's always gonna be haters. 2) You're always going to represent some sort of group or stereotype (intentionally or not) that won't necessarily live up to everyone's expectations. I don't know if that makes sense. Well, in my opinion, it is better to take a risk and open a large audience's eyes to new art than to be safe and try not to offend anyone. Just do what you enjoy. LOVE the new channel!
You got me so excited!! Hmm, I think for a group name, we could play off the "Captain" thing a little. I'm not sure who a captain commands (maybe a company?) but we could call ourselves something along those lines. :) Unless you thought that was implying you were more in charge than you'd like to be, if you wanted us to be on more even levels. Personally, though, I wouldn't mind, as you are really the guy making it happen. Also, I'd love to do a video response, but I don't know ASL (yet) :(
Your videos are very inspiring. We should become your Valordictorians (or Valorians). That would both show our support for and following of you as well as our thirst for knowledge of this ASL community. Can't wait to see what you post next! I've been watching your videos for a couple years now (since freshman year in college), and this is just one more step in your journey. Best of luck! <3
I love being referred to as y'all. It makes me feel like I'm talking to my mother's side of the family. I'm NOT suggesting that as a community name! Just telling you that the word y'all somehow makes me happy.
how about Perpetuals or someting like that it means always changing which you have stated we would do. so how about the community name have something to do with always changing. Sorry not really good with names but Valord's Perpetual Society. But I am now 100% behind you.
Ok, so in the video that I have sent you, I was not actually the one doing the signing. It was a friend of mine when we were at an anime convention (EXP Con 2010). She saw your original video and wanted to do it at the convention. The actual signing does not start till about 6:40 into the video. Can't wait till you post the next one. Definatly looking forward to it. ^_^
I like this new direction! change is constant and its not a bad thing it can be great at times. One thing that I must say though is if you love to do your version of asl then do it! 3.. there is always going to be someone who is offended over whatever ya know? As long as your not hurting anyone do what you love :)... someone down there commented valor nation as our name and I love it! Anyway you are great keep up the great work see ya next time haha
You definitely have an artist's personality. You move around from one style of art to another, which is great and all, but when you get a group of fans for one style you've worked with (i.e. your ASL vids) it's tough to pull them into something totally different (like this). Although I don't agree that you should stop your asl vids because some people were offended (hey--that's just part of any good art!) I understand wanting to grow and respect the community. Sadly, I do prefer the asl vids.
I have to say, I agree with the point that MsFrizzyHair and RandomerthanAverage made. You are being a little drastic, I'm obviously on your side 100 % because I think you are a asuper nice guy, but I have a little story for you. I teach 3rd grade and I showed my kids 4 videos of ASL songs, your Fireflies was the hardest one, and they picked yours! Even though the others were easier and you were up against Firework, that's tough! Anyway, you should do what you feel comfortable with and I'm here!
I really like that you don't talk a mile a minute, but you keep it moving. Its annoying when people cut every single pause or breath out of their videos, but I hate it when people pause to regroup their thoughts for 15 seconds for every 30 seconds of video. Don't change.
@ChristineIreneable Truthfully it was like the third take, because the previous two times my video came out wrong. So I had some practice, lol. I'm usually not quite as articulate on the first try.
ASL is truly an art form that's why i started watching it and trying to do it myself (which i failed at). I don't think you should have to explain yourself to anyone, you have done nothing wrong. Boo to them if they don't like your videos. You're your own person and only have an obligation to yourself and those close to you but i really don't think you have an obligation to those whom you have never met.
I feel like your videos, though perhaps not a representation of Deaf culture, were still a good thing for ASL. I had been trying to learn ASL for some time before I found your videos, but I didn't ever go far because I got discouraged by feeling like I needed formal classes and formal training to learn the basics. Learning even ten words in a language can open up a whole world of learning about a culture. Seeing someone have fun learning gave me more confidence to jump right in.
Hmm, so you wanna know what you can call us? Well, I don't know about everyone else... but you can call me anytime! ;) hahahaha. Super cheesy. You seem like such a doof with your facial expressions and random quirks, I love it! But anyways, I am all for your new road you're taking here, I'm excited to see what you bring to the table. Hopefully I will be able to upload some videos (and a response) some time soon... I'm waiting for break in bills to buy a new laptop... yay. -.-
CHALLENGE ACCEPTED! You are on the right track sir! Adding multiple perspectives is exactly what we need; it makes us diverse, and it satisfies our hunger for opinions. I really fancied you calling us Ya'll, I don't mean to offend you hot stuff especially because I love what you are doing, but I hardly hear people just say ya'll. It fits well with a large group of people, is an instant community maker, and is just a homey word because its a part of our culture. Two thumbs up and a big toe too!!
I would love to do a PitUSA, but alas I have very limited knowledge of sign language. I might be able to repeat "complicated, sexy machine" over and over, but something tells me that's not quite what you're looking for. Namewise, I'm fluctuating between Valorians, and The Bravura ( Bravura's my favorite). Also, your Texan is showing. It's quite endearing, and I wonder if you're aware you do it. In my opinion, art is not a monologue or a dialogue, but a visual representation of emotion and life.
I've meant to comment for quite awhile now. I want Glee to do a show with you doing an ASL performance. It seems like the perfect venue since they try to be progressive in their programming. But alas, you are moving on, and obviously can't control what they do with their own storylines. --I am glad that you are vlogging though, and think I will continue to enjoy what you have to offer. :)
I am in the third category, as some others posted below. I wish you the best. Time for me to leave. Just curious, though...what is Apple's role in your change? I suspect there is some influence.
I'm still in the second camp. I was in it for the sign language, and I'm disappointed by the new direction. Besides, your facial expressions were a lot more engaging while you were still signing.
As for a name, I feel something playing off your captiancy. xD Would Ensigns be too low a rank?
Name: I was thinking either something to do with the name "CaptainValor" or a historical referance. What do you think about "The Valorous Fellows"?
Question: Art is both in a way... That's what makes it unique. It is an expressed diologue with the self. Think of Hamlet speaking to himself and trying to gather his thoughts; think of Monet painting his innermost emotions for the world to see... Art is easiest to understand once you trancende the boundries of "self" and "others".
I'm not so sure about the new direction. I loved the music, humor and acting from the ASL videos. If possible I'd like to see you still incorporate music and creativity in you channel. The Party in the USA collaboration is a good sign. I feel more optimistic than I did last week. Maybe later on you can dress as the Zombie from "RE. Your Brains" again or don some other outfit to fit a theme.
As for a our name, I like "Y'all" but being a Texan, it doesn't stand out to me. I say "Valor Brigade"
So, here is what happened with me.. You are a favorite of mine, and so after yoru video last week I took a beat and didn't say anything. I do love your ASL videos, but during your videos from the live show you did I learned to love your voice too.
So I guess what I am saying is that I was suprised by your switch of pace, but you are very talented and I am interested in your opinions. I am also interested in being apart of discussions with you and others like me who feel the same way.
@jennmarshall16 And now to actually answer today's question... I really think that art is a very personal thing. each person has a different idea of what art means to them: verbal visual or even touch or smell. it is really up to each person and what they think is beautiful

Its hard when people do not learn Sign Language correctly, and just try to jump into the Culture.
vr4jay 1 month ago
I'm sure you have got some responses from Deaf people...what do they have to say about your change?
vr4jay 1 month ago
I highly doubt you'll see this, but I want to say this. When I first saw your video of signing you inspired me to try to do a video in signing, to help me practice with it. When I watched your first video, I felt that you gave up on something, but I may have been wrong. You looked like you were having fun doing what you were, and I wish you would continue to do it.

So many people have never met anyone who can sign, and this opened their eyes to something new.
indigogirl567 2 months ago
@indigogirl567 But if people are opened up to something new in the wrong way, that does do more harm then good. You heard him say that Deaf people were offended by his work.

Thank you!

TheBoochan82 2 months ago
@TheBoochan82 But there are lots of people who are better at ASL that don't get his kind of recognition. I don't know why it's him that's "giving the Deaf Community a 'glance' at music," especially since what he was doing wasn't truly ASL. It was fun to watch, and it made people want to learn ASL. But linguistically, it was the equivalent of singing a song in broken Spanish. badmario didn't say anything about YTPs, and he's subscribed to a lot of people who use true, full ASL. cont

@purplewowies (cont)

LazyDaiyz 2 months ago
I'm from the deaf community, I don't find it offensive at all. I've enjoyed several videos that CaptainValor have made. If he wish to change and find something new then it is his decision to do so. I have no expectation for it. Please don't be delusion to thinks there are such community agrees altogether. We are clearly an individualism(if that's the right word) in and out of this community.

Thank you for giving that to us.

CaraMarinara, You're absolutely right. I'm a hearing person who was raised in a deaf community as my parents are both hearing impaired, and I see on a daily basis how critical a select few can be, and how appreciative others can be to new things.
JukeboxJedi 3 months ago 2
@JukeboxJedi I think it's a bit pretentious of people who voluntarily come to see someone's videos to demand that he change the manner of speech that he's used to and comfortable with just because they don't like how he talks. Y'all don't like it, y'all don't have to watch his videos. 'nuff said.
madinno 3 months ago
@madinno Personally, I quite agree with you. I don't think CaptainValor should stop saying Y'all just because a bunch of people commented that they don't like it. I was just pointing out that choosing something including Y'all as a name for a community which includes people who don't like being addressed as Y'all, and felt strongly enough to post to that effect, would probably alienate those people. Maybe that's not a problem; you can't please all the people all the time.
JukeboxJedi 3 months ago
You could call us scruffy looking nerf herders if you wanted. I think whatever you pick will just end up sticking. My question is why do you want to put a name to the community?
I understand the appeals, made for and of, the naming, and do not object to the idea. A moniker can engender a sense of community; it also creates a delineation between the 'us' and the 'them'. It can also set the tone of the community, so caution may be warranted.
Your southern affectation suggest Y'alltubers though.

Rinthary 3 months ago
Definitely do not let those trolls bully you into feeling guilty. You're a student who choose to bring something fun & expressive to the table with what you were learning, & it helped you in learning ASL & INSPIRED so many others to take up this ASL. Many ASL students are so wooden & dreary first learning the language, & the videos helped them understand that expression is essential. But don't feel like you OWE anything to anyone if you were doing the best you could with the level you were at.
Direness 3 months ago
You know, I can understand part of Deaf reaction to the videos, because the Deaf are constantly assaulted with misunderstandings regarding ASL as their language. I understand this. But some members can be very vocal and ready to JUMP on ANYTHING content related that's created by ASL students, and to be discouraging & small minded in how they're interpreting/reacting to what has been presented. This is THEIR PROBLEM that they choose to be that way, not yours.

Please stop saying Y'all! Annunciate. Sorry. Pet peeve of mine.
First of all, Valorites, all the way.
Second of all, challenge accepted. Be looking for my video. I'll be the one with the ears.

@furryvampirecandy It's spelled 'enunciate'. Sorry. Pet peeve of mine.

@madinno Thank you. Sorry I mess up spelling on so many words. I'm trying to get better though. I appreciate the comment. :D

I haven't seen your previous video (last week's?), and it's so weird hearing you speak! AlsoL valorites? valorettes?

You got me so excited!! Hmm, I think for a group name, we could play off the "Captain" thing a little. I'm not sure who a captain commands (maybe a company?) but we could call ourselves something along those lines. :) Unless you thought that was implying you were more in charge than you'd like to be, if you wanted us to be on more even levels. Personally, though, I wouldn't mind, as you are really the guy making it happen. Also, I'd love to do a video response, but I don't know ASL (yet) :(

I am on board Captain Valor. Let's get this ship out to sea!

I like the name Valordictorians.
Sarasince1992 3 months ago
how about Perpetuals or someting like that it means always changing which you have stated we would do. so how about the community name have something to do with always changing. Sorry not really good with names but Valord's Perpetual Society. But I am now 100% behind you.
TheImadorkduh 3 months ago
Ah, I love Valordictorians! Great name @erniemac7.
I haven't signed since high school but I will give it my best, OValord! #weirdplayonwords

@sliferfreak21 Yes! It's exactly along the lines of what I was thinking. So full of win when she gets to the chorus!

Sadly, I do prefer the asl vids.
semily91 3 months ago
But I will still give this a shot.
semily91 3 months ago
I have to say, I agree with the point that MsFrizzyHair and RandomerthanAverage made. You are being a little drastic, I'm obviously on your side 100 % because I think you are a asuper nice guy, but I have a little story for you. I teach 3rd grade and I showed my kids 4 videos of ASL songs, your Fireflies was the hardest one, and they picked yours! Even though the others were easier and you were up against Firework, that's tough! Anyway, you should do what you feel comfortable with and I'm here!
thelandofme 3 months ago
I really like that you don't talk a mile a minute, but you keep it moving. Its annoying when people cut every single pause or breath out of their videos, but I hate it when people pause to regroup their thoughts for 15 seconds for every 30 seconds of video. Don't change.
ChristineIreneable 3 months ago
@ChristineIreneable Truthfully it was like the third take, because the previous two times my video came out wrong. So I had some practice, lol. I'm usually not quite as articulate on the first try.
CaptainValor 3 months ago 2
ASL is truly an art form that's why i started watching it and trying to do it myself (which i failed at). I don't think you should have to explain yourself to anyone, you have done nothing wrong. Boo to them if they don't like your videos. You're your own person and only have an obligation to yourself and those close to you but i really don't think you have an obligation to those whom you have never met.

Jump cuts are ok!!! You can cut out all of the pausing and "uhhs" and "uhms" ;)

dafttool 3 months ago
@dafttool I think Glee did a sign language episode already... :\

@CaptainValor Did they? Oh well. I'm not a giant Glee fan, but think you could definitely rawk an episode. Their loss.

I'm still in the second camp. I was in it for the sign language, and I'm disappointed by the new direction. Besides, your facial expressions were a lot more engaging while you were still signing.
As for a name, I feel something playing off your captiancy. xD Would Ensigns be too low a rank?
MischievousPuppy 3 months ago
Since you're the Captain we are the army.
Lisa13245 3 months ago
Name: I was thinking either something to do with the name "CaptainValor" or a historical referance. What do you think about "The Valorous Fellows"?
Question: Art is both in a way... That's what makes it unique. It is an expressed diologue with the self. Think of Hamlet speaking to himself and trying to gather his thoughts; think of Monet painting his innermost emotions for the world to see... Art is easiest to understand once you trancende the boundries of "self" and "others".
MexicanGnomes 3 months ago
I'm not so sure about the new direction. I loved the music, humor and acting from the ASL videos. If possible I'd like to see you still incorporate music and creativity in you channel. The Party in the USA collaboration is a good sign. I feel more optimistic than I did last week. Maybe later on you can dress as the Zombie from "RE. Your Brains" again or don some other outfit to fit a theme.
As for a our name, I like "Y'all" but being a Texan, it doesn't stand out to me. I say "Valor Brigade"

i subscribed to watch your asl videos. I probably fall into the 3d category. Good luck with developing your comunity.

I am also interested in being apart of discussions with you and others like me who feel the same way.
jennmarshall16 3 months ago
@jennmarshall16 And now to actually answer today's question... I really think that art is a very personal thing. each person has a different idea of what art means to them: verbal visual or even touch or smell. it is really up to each person and what they think is beautiful
