I guess what I'm saying is that this relatively simple tactic should not increase the odds of a player winning to the extent that it does. It makes the match very linear, the action predictable, and the counter-strategy a chore.
But the thing about street fighter is that if you use a predictable strategy then you are easily countered. What you don't see in the video is the guile spacing out his sonic booms so gief can't green hand them then spd him, or ex green hand through them. Also as you will notice in the second round was once guile got careless with his spacing gief destroyed him.
Good points. Since I'm new to Guile, i miss some subtleties. Still, I don't think spacing/zoning is THAT hard to learn. And I believe SF4's game design favors defense too much. It rewards things like waiting for the other player to move and then punishing that move, turtling, or running away too much. I often have players crouching across the screen waiting for me to do something (I main Bison so I can't chip from far away with a projectile) or constantly running away and firing. *Yawn*
@hazeddon Don't know that I totally agree. Not all predictable strategies are created equal. In SF4, there's certainly a difference between predictable strategies that are easily countered and one those that aren't.
I hate any players that constantly walk backwards and throw projectiles, much like this guile. I guess you'd have to be a non-projectile player to know just how cheesy and boring this makes matches.
Im not trying to disrespect your opinion but how else do you expect guile to play zangief? Up close? Thats why capcom gave him a projectile because up close zangief will slaughter him. And this is coming from some one who uses zangief and cammy.
SF4 played at the highest (and in my opinion, the best) level is not about exploiting flaws in the game. Sf4 is a fun game, but it hasn't done a great job of balancing its characters in my opinion). In this case I think mounting such an effective defense by doing something so simple is a flaw. Again, you'd have to play a non-projectile character to see how effective jump back and sonic boom is in the hands of a capable player. Guile's recovery time from his sonic boom is also slightly too quick.
Well like i said, i use zangief and cammy so i know how it feels to get locked out by some one using projectiles. But at the same time when the guile got predictable as you can see in the second round the zangief dominated, there is always a way around a tactic in my opinion(except for sagats st.rh which is just cheap)
I hate the fact that every Guile I've seen, lacks the back-breaker. That is his main weapon, and if utilized the correct way, you'll dominate. Although, you'll need more then just back-breakers to win. That's obvious though..
Gief was hitting fierce pretty early whenever he jumped. It would have been difficult to consistently airthrow him without getting tagged with the jumping fierce.
ya i know he only has 2 moves, that's what makes him so original.but just using sonic boom after another every other second, thats just lame.ive seen a lot better players with him hardly use sonic boom and still woop ass.
Gief lacked patience. So many things he could have done to punish those sonic booms. Gain meter then purposely whiff an ex greenhand -> 720 would have shut that Guile up.
you obviously dont play much street fighter because thats exactly how a guile should play a gief, there really isnt many options if you let him get close you dont have a chance
sorry but this is the most boring fighting game ive seen, ever Oo'

Just proof that a good projectile character can completely shut down a Zangief.

this is why zangief has double everyone else's hp lol.

Dash throw by Guile at [2:13] was rather ballsy, I'd say.

Hey I only have two moves you know what would be a great idea?
Not using one of them.

Sonic zoning is what you're supposed to do against Gief, unless you wanna be mixed up and SPDed to all eternal hell.

LAWL more like WOW! a guile player who is cheesy "sonic boom, sonic boom"
jewishlilboy 3 years ago
the 'gief player isn't using his lariat, at all. he could be bypassing and punishing almost all of those booms and he's not
the Guile player is being cheap, sure, but he'd be getting punished for it if this 'gief didn't suck
