those big columns in parliament are made of plaster. They are casted on moulds and reinforced with scrim. They are then covered in wooden casing, laquered and polished. :))
i made it on hungary around 86... the different was i tried to convert an old lathe machine... my method was to put a conegear pair on the handwheel which one drove the original shaft under the slide...
and on the back used the exist gears, i could change the rev/ turn...
but that was work very hard...
i like as you solved it...

when i got trough to the core. i milled the oppositside's back... as it get closer the round looking...
do you think there is machine that can hande a much larger column. you know like the type of colums you find in parliaments etc.. It is my understanding that the carving was done manually. I can't find a docu any7where can you help
