It was the media which cost the Americans this war, Westmoreland failed to control what people saw on their television sets. The VC were finished the NVA was broken all they had to do was finish the job, but Nixon pulled out, costing them the war.
You have a military who are either crappy soldiers, corrupt, unmotivated or apathetic (ARVN). The urban society either want the democratic government or don't and fight against it in some way. Finally you have the rural people... Veitnam's majority. They largely just want to live in the manner they have for centuries, ignorant of the outside world, and as such they will "support" what causes this to come about. @Sharkattack48 Richard Nixon's bombing of Hanoi in December 1972 actually forced North Vietnam to sign a peace treaty and that all hostilelity should stop. The real problem is that Congress never allowed to put more funding to the ARVN because anti-war feeling was strong in Congress. The ARVN actually beat back the NVA during the Tet Offensive proving that they are capable warriors.
Congress stopped funding the ARVN after the U.S. pulled out and that's why the ARVN got steamrolled in 1975.
It is doubtful that more money would have helped. The ARVN was fundamentally crippled by incompetent and corrupt leadership combiend with low morale among the rank and file. More money wouldn't have really helped fixing that and as long as these problems were endemic, the deafeat of the ARVN was but a question of time.

Nope. The northern leadership was a lot better than their southern counterparts on just about every level. You didn't see NVA officers hoarding the supplies meant for their men so they could sell them on the black market and other horror shows like that. More money would have made hardly a differrence, given just how ineffectual the ARVN used what it already had. As for advisors, if they didn't learn it in 10 years, chances are another 10 wouldn't have been enough, either.
As for being defenseless, the ARVN was far from it in 1975. On paper. In reality, rampant corruption, desertion and abysmal morale made it nothing more than a white elephant. Those are problems you won't be solving by throwing more money at them or via the same advisors that had tried and failed to improve this sorry lot for over 10 years already at that point.
As it was, continued monetary help and advisors would at best have caused the 1975 offesive to only take the central highlands instead of going all the way to Saigon. Needless to say, the fall of the highlands would have meant that the fall of Saigon was only a question of time. It'd have bought the ARVN another year or two to uselessly flounder about before being put out of its misery.
W/e your opinion about the war is yours. But the end result of the U.S. leaving was one million Vietnamese dead, one million in Laos, 2 million Cambodians that had nothing to do with it, and 58,000 American soldiers that died for basically nothing. Our commanders said this would happen if we left too soon. And all the critics of the war can say to that is "well we shouldn't have been there in the first place." Sorry, but that's not good enough. I just hate to see our soldiers die that way.

@natcaasi The first governments created during the Cold War by the US (Korea and Vietnam) are always very corrupt & weak while the Soviet backed governments start out very strong & stable. South Korea took 30 years to thrive, while the Soviet-backed N Korea is bankrupt and highly oppressed to maintain power. It is possible S Vietnam could have become a modern nation state.

There was no political will to invade North Vietnam, and even if there was, the communist revolution would have gone on, just like when the French occupied the country. Ignoring all of that, the South Vietnamese were ruled by factions that were very selfish and had other factions that were ready to assassinate the self centered rulers and install themselves.Ultimately, USA would leave.

@natcaasi The first governments created during the Cold War by the US (Korea and Vietnam) are always very corrupt & weak while the Soviet backed governments start out very strong & stable. South Korea took 30 years to thrive, while the Soviet-backed N Korea is bankrupt and highly oppressed to maintain power. It is possible S Vietnam could have become a modern nation state.

Heck, they would've had every male at age of 18 serve the arm forces of South Vietnam for two years. On top of that South Vietnam would have benefited from American military weaponry's and technologies. They always toil with power shift and control. They always make ways to make country go against each other so they remain dominant. Think of it this way. China and India are still far from being a superpower, with Chinese economy being only 1/3 the size of the US and India a measly 1/12.
