While I'm a metal fan, I'm not usually a fan of western metal - it's a bit... malicious for me. But I love this song! Somehow it's exquisitely beautiful in its dark ugliness (and I mean that in a good way). It's very cathartic to listen to.

AJFA sounds funny because it was mixed weird, it has probs around 2-3 rhythm tracks mixed low, along with the rest of the tracks. But the drums sound really loud compared to rest yet everything is still quiet. It's A weirdly produced and mixed album.
i wouldn't say badly, Death Magnetic is badly produced, everything is compressed and is way too loud. In the end, to me, if i go from listening to a song on master to a song on AJFA, i just turn up my speakers.
Yeah DM has horrible production and clipping, but AJFA isnt great either, MOP is much better produced. KEA has pretty bad sound quality too, but you cant blame em for that, it was made on like $300 and it's so old
That's arranged in tiers. Tiers 1-3 are when Metallica was a powerhouse. 4-5 are unfortunately the state they have become. Haven't had the lasting power of Megadeth.

...AJFA is arguably the most metal album of the lot and if you find Blackened, Shortest Straw etc boring then I find that quite odd.
You rip on Lightning for its production yet praise KEA as beast. Flawed point is flawed. MoP 'halfway decent'... Most people will disagree with that.
Agree RE the Loads though they were better than Anger.

@mickelboy182 I had liked Kill 'Em All because of its instrumentals, since the only instrumentally enjoyable song (in my opinion) on Ride the Lightning was Fade to Black. The solos for Jump In The Fire and The Four Horsemen were my favorite and were incredible. I don't care what other people think about MoP dude, I didn't think it was "amazing". And yes, St Anger IS better than Load and Reload. Listen to Invisible Kid and see how the sound is different but good.

I simply didn't like the way AJFA sounded, it had a sound that was just typical and it was in every single song on that album.
We're talking about tastes so this argument could go on forever, I must say though, you'll definitely find you see things quite different to most Metallica fans. I grew up with them since I was a kid and I'm just not a fan of the direction they've taken, though it can't be helped that Hetfield's voice is gone...

Anyone who is wondering, Lars DID NOT use some sort of specialized custom tuned iron snare, what he uses is known as a piccolo snare, it's exactly the same as your ordinary snare, but it is higher pitched and can be tuned so when the snare is off that it makes that high pitched ping you hear. Hope that clears it up.

I believe DeathMagnetic was pretty cool and Kirk Hammet has till got it. Some of the soloes where really cool. St.Anger and DeathMagnetic are not their best albums but their much better in every single aspect of music than those new pseudo-metal bands who know no music and all they can do is scream to their mic trying to attract pshychologicaly bruised emo teenagers and sell they're crap for 20$. That's sad... Metallica still keep it up though.

@mickelboy182 ...And Justice For All was boring, Ride the Lightning's recording tools sucked so much balls that it ruined the songs, Master of Puppets was halfway decent and Kill 'Em All was just beast. Load and Reload were shit, Death Magnetic had a few good songs and St Anger doesn't deserve to be at the bottom of the list. Just because it has a different sound, doesn't mean it's horrible.

...AJFA is arguably the most metal album of the lot and if you find Blackened, Shortest Straw etc boring then I find that quite odd.
You rip on Lightning for its production yet praise KEA as beast. Flawed point is flawed. MoP 'halfway decent'... Most people will disagree with that.
Agree RE the Loads though they were better than Anger.
A different sound wouldn't be so bad if that sound was actually good. Metallica doesn't play St Anger stuff live because they know nobody likes it....

@mickelboy182 I had liked Kill 'Em All because of its instrumentals, since the only instrumentally enjoyable song (in my opinion) on Ride the Lightning was Fade to Black. The solos for Jump In The Fire and The Four Horsemen were my favorite and were incredible. I don't care what other people think about MoP dude, I didn't think it was "amazing". And yes, St Anger IS better than Load and Reload. Listen to Invisible Kid and see how the sound is different but good.

@mickelboy182 And Justice For All is boring because every song sounds the same. The Shortest Straw was by far the best song on AJFA, however it still didn't top songs even off of Death Magnetic! I simply didn't like the way AJFA sounded, it had a sound that was just typical and it was in every single song on that album.

We're talking about tastes so this argument could go on forever, I must say though, you'll definitely find you see things quite different to most Metallica fans. I grew up with them since I was a kid and I'm just not a fan of the direction they've taken, though it can't be helped that Hetfield's voice is gone...

@mickelboy182 Yeah, even though I did like a lot of the riffs and stuff in Death Magnetic, if James' voice hadn't blown, it probably would have been a lot better. But as far as St. Anger goes, I simply liked it a lot compared to other ones. I listened to so much AJFA that I realized how just flat out plain it was. But anyways, it was a good argument, you put out some good points. :P "Until out paths cross again, young Skywalker..."

Anyone who is wondering, Lars DID NOT use some sort of specialized custom tuned iron snare, what he uses is known as a piccolo snare, it's exactly the same as your ordinary snare, but it is higher pitched and can be tuned so when the snare is off that it makes that high pitched ping you hear. Hope that clears it up.

They wanted a heavy, dirty sounding album.
They wanted a "garage sound". I like the way it feels.
I like the sound of the snare, (though lars sucks) and solos would have taken away from the sound of this album.

I believe DeathMagnetic was pretty cool and Kirk Hammet has till got it. Some of the soloes where really cool. St.Anger and DeathMagnetic are not their best albums but their much better in every single aspect of music than those new pseudo-metal bands who know no music and all they can do is scream to their mic trying to attract pshychologicaly bruised emo teenagers and sell they're crap for 20$. That's sad... Metallica still keep it up though.
