It's hard to believe Thunder Gulch was such a longshot in this race. He had won the grade 2 Remsen at 2, and had won the Fountain of Youth and Florida Derby before running 4th in the Blue Grass. I guess most thought the Blue Grass was a true representation. After winning the Derby, Thunder Gulch ran a close 3rd in the Preakness, and then won the Belmont, Swaps, Travers, and Kentucky Cup Classic before Cigar crushed him in the Woodward. Unfortunately, TG came out of the Woodward w/ an injury.
@saveus228 You OBVIOUSLY didn't follow Thunder Gulch before this race. He was a fighter and proved it in his first few races as 3 Year Old. By the time he finished fourth in the increasing over-emphasized Blue Grass Stakes he'd already completed his mission in defeating Suave Prospect twice. He DID NOT have a 'perfect trip' -he DID have a perfect ride in Gary Stevens and he was the ONLY horse I picked to win that year...a rarity...and another close call for a Triple Crown candidate.
@jhordanian He was dismissed because of that 4th in the BG. He was also one of three entries by his trainer who sent out the favorite, Timber Country at 3-1.
Another usual Pat wait all Day ride cost Timber Country in this race.

Too bad for Talkin Man..couldn't get that extra kick. Good memories of that horse..I cared for him back in the 90's.
