I believe that's were the mistranslation came from. I recall japanese players being confused as to why Zangief was considered gay in America.

Trust me, when Capcom wants one of their characters to be gay, they are far more obvious and explicit about it. Just search "Jean Armstrong" and you will see what I mean.

Actually the Soviet Union fell in December 1991, SF2 takes was released in March 1991 (and as such I assume it also takes place in that time period). SFA3 takes place BEFORE SF2, so the USSR is still around.
