The reason why I even played this game was because my older brother told me about it.. in fact when I was like 3, he was playing it... and i was scared because of the intro and i never got into the game until I was either 12 or 13... and i thought it was pretty good, and after playing this one... I would prefer this over Oath in Felghana... because I've played this a few times, and its just classic, like Super Metroid.
@KaiduxTheKnight I can understand the fear, hah. When I was young, We had Jurassic Park for the SNES, and that game scared the living daylights out of me, couldn't even play it at all for the longest time! In regards to the music though, I personally love them both. For nostalgia, the SNES was the way to go, but I'd never even heard about OiF before, and when I discovered it, the remixes blew my mind!

If I remember correctly, this is where the difficulty curve really took a steep incline. After dying countless times, I had to say to myself, as with other games back then as a kid with no income renting games on his parents' dime: "Best get some skills kid, you've got until Sunday to beat this game!"
I have been randomly humming the intro to this song for the past 15 years, and FOR THE LIFE OF ME I could not remember what the hell it was from. I feel like I have attained some kind of cosmic understanding knowing where this damned song came from.
Wow, I'd forgotten about this game. I remember the first time I played it (when I was 9), I only managed to beat it by finding a spot where the enemies re-spawned without leaving the screen, positioning myself just below where they were walking, and TAPING DOWN THE ATTACK BUTTON when I went to baseball practice. I was such a little asshole.
And from what I remember, electronics boutique resold games as well, they might have considered it rare or something. I see no reason for YS III to be three times the price of a regular game, it wasn't rare at all, being made for about 8 or 9 different platforms.
@jhalton I have my friend John A. who randomly found this game for me at our local thrift store (Granny's Attic) for like 3$. we (I) had no idea how good at least the music was!!!
Haha yess! This was the first RPG I ever beat (maybe even first game) and I was 7!! I tried playing this again and it's bloody hard..ahh the innocence of youth
Man I love this game....Oath in Felghana comes out for PSP in America sometime soon! Now we can play the "greatest" version without having to apply translation patches and....google for 3 minutes :)
Beaten this on NES, Genesis, SNES, and PC. Can't get enough of it--Ys 7 in 2 days!!!!
@Cellidor Google it. It was like a computer type thing. A lot of people download the emulator for Gradius and Castlevania that we never got in the states - I used it to play Lagoon, but I was going through a list of ROMs and saw Ys III on there. I have yet to play it, but I will.
I like this song, in fact, most of the Ys III soundtrack is memorable. The game itself is not very good: sword's range sucks, you are bound to trade hits with the enemies, the difficulty is very unbalanced (the very first boss is beatable by level 5, but you have to be around level 14 to beat the second boss. WTF?). If you want to play Ys III, pick up Oath in Felghana, which is the superior version :)
@Xlay3r I've been playing through Oath in Felghana recently. The gameplay is much better compared to this, the music is great and they've added more to the story.
I'll have to say that I still prefer Wanderers from Ys, though, The gameplay may not be as nice but I've played through it so many times that I consider it a classic. No matter how good the remake is, I can't favor it over what I've played for so long.
@Xlay3r Also, the music in OF is nicely done, but I still prefer the old SNES music.
If you listen to the Eldam Mountains song, you can hear the song clearly and it fits perfectly. You can hear the arpeggio in the background and it flows with the lead. If you compare the remake (Elderm Mountains, Steeling the Will to Fight), it just doesn't sound as nice. It's slowed down and there's no fast arpeggio in the background.
I could continue writing about all the music but there's not enough space.
@Xlay3r I didn't find Wanderers from Ys as difficult as you said it was, I had no difficulty with fighting the bosses. Maybe that's why I enjoy the SNES version over Oath in Felghana.
Also, I don't mean to disagree with what you wrote. You shared your opinion and I shared mine.
I remember humming this song to myself when I was in first or second grade or so... brings back memories. Even as a kid I played the game just cuz I liked the music, even though the game itself wasn't that great.
Yeah lol. The game itself is pretty crap, but it was almost worth beating it just to hear all the awesome music. (And yes, I can proudly claim that I did actually beat this retardedly difficult game. Wait. . . that's not something to be proud of. . .)
@Cellidor Hell yeah it's an achievement, I can't believe I beat this three times because I loved it so much....Not sure why people think it's bad. o_o I actually loved the storyline and the game play...That final boss was such a jerk though, making me have to jump so perfectly to hit him without taking more than half of my life bar in damage...
Especially when you go from playing Ys3 to Oath in Felghana. hearing all the songs, and recognizing each of them, as well as remembering people and places as you meet them is just.....unbelievably nostalgic and awesome.
EDIT: There were many cross platform games in which the SNES was superior, just not this one IMO. Some people perfer this version; I'll stick with the Genesis.
This is my personal favorite version of this track... the original TG-16 version is a classic no doubt, but I love the crushing bass line and tempo of this version!
@Dreamcleanser... don't get me wrong, the Genesis/Megadrive was a great system and has just as great a library of AAA games as the SNES/Super Famicom does, but when it comes to the audio department, there's just no comparison... the SNES shits all over the Genesis any day of the week!
wah! this game rules one of the best games i have ever played in my intire life. lol i have a turbo controller for the SNES and everytime i played this game i would just keep making my auto attack on the flys in the tigray quarry so then the next morning he would be the highest level lol
but then it gets intence once you get to ballacetine i honestly think its the hardest place on that game...

Ys III for SNES was 1 Megabyte.
They are already quite small. You don't have to lie to make them look small.
