  • looking to go in 2010 for the 200th anniv. any advice for an american guy i'm 28. looking for the tent/ with people my age aka the best tent to hang in for the opening day. hoff brau? lowen brau? schottenhamel. any advice would be great.

  • I'm on my way tonight. Prague, Munich, Amsterdam. Let the debauchery commence!

  • JROV13-One piece of advice, German women don't like to be referred to by the words "hot chics" . If you choose not to mind your manners than you and your buddies will find yourselves dancing with each other. Kind regards!

  • Actually, the acceptance of being addressed as "hot chic" changes over the course of time proportionally to the consumed amount of beer and schnaps until it is not only accepted but required - every gentleman is obliged to recognize this pivotal moment in time and act accordingly.

But please remember to be discreet, because even though women usually enjoy behaving in ways that could be refered to as "slutty", they don't like this to be pointed out openly by others. Now go out and have some fun!

  • My friends and I might be goin' to Oktoberfest this year. We're all from the state of Ohio, and I was wonderin' since we're all guys in our early 20's .. how easy is it to score with some hott young German chicks while we're there? .. and are there any dance clubs in the area? .. thankx .. oh and great informative video btw, i thoroughly enjoyed it.

  • I have a couple questions. A. Are there any jugendherbergers close to the festival that you would recommend? or just recommend even if its a trains distance away? And when is the ideal time to book a room? B. Other than beer and food what are some other expenses I should bring money for while in the festival? C. Which tent do you think serves the best beer?

  • I don't know about A, but we have a great public transportation system

B: you can bring money for all the rides...also the beer is very expensive.

    C: I recommend the Schottenhamel

  • DropKick, to your question A: The hostels are generally packed during the Fest. Arguably the best hostel is Wombats on Senefelderstrasse near the main train station but it's also one of the most expensive and will likely be full. For less money, try the hostel "4You"; it's not as hip but just as convenient (near station) and will likely have a vacancy during the Fest if you book soon. Good luck.

  • WHAT A NICE WORK CONGRATULATIONS

  • Thank you very much! Cheers...

  • hi qwick question

how much did u ruthly spend a day in the fest in total?

i know many travel in munich by train if u dont know german is the train still a option are is it not going to be understandable to us and best find a lil BnB in munich?

and lastly what else is there in munich are close to it what is a must see while we are there

  • Hi "theozzyp", here the answers to your questions (part I of IV):

    1) The matter of spending at the Oktoberfest depends on the person and his/her agenda. But to give you an idea: a liter of beer is about 8.50 euro (however the beer is extra strong, made especially for the fest); the average carnival ride is 3.50 euro; and food is around 50% more than outside the fest grounds (thus I typically eat before arriving at the fest).

  • (part II of IV):

    2) To travel by train in Germany is no problem and equally easy within Munich by subway. The Oktoberfest grounds are only one stop via the underground from Munichs main train station (just follow the crowds). Besides, if you ever do have a problem, most everyone speaks English. Or stop by the handy tourist information office, of which there are two in Munich. One is located just outside the main train station and the other is on Marienplatz, the Old Town market square.

  • (part III of IV):

    3) To secure accommodations will pose the biggest problem for the fest book well in advance. Some places are taking reservations now and others not until March. And note that room/bed prices typically increase 40-100% during the Oktoberfest.

  • (cont.) answers to "theozzyp" questions (part IV of IV):

    4) Definitely combine your Oktoberfest trip with some real Munich sightseeing; there are umpteen things to do and see in the Bavarian capital. For example, why not visit some of the city's venerated institutions and plan a museum day on Sunday, when admission at each state-run museum is only 1 euro per person.

I hope that helps. Have fun and happy travels. Cheers!

  • Sad thing is that when i was a Teen i used to wear a button saying" America the land of the free" I come here years later and i found out there IS nothing for free as i said u can't even say what u feel/think they take it as an insult...their FEELINGS are being hurt lmao, come on lol .So do not talk shit about a country u have no clue of! I know where what country is free and what country isn't...so quit talking shit!

  • people that post several comments in a row judging spewing hate have personal issues and/or agendas and do not merit any replies. Post on "Rita"

  • There are people with agendas and radicals yelling hate all over the tube- you even have radicals posing as Americans talking trash so more people can hate Americans. Don't waste your time when you see hate speech think 'MOTIVE' who or why would they talk trash or hate? You will get your answer.

  • Do not toy with these Germans people remember where Hitler came from? Remember how many Germans joined him? Better move on to less hostile people more kinder countries not hell bent on being *above* others education including America who saved their ass from Hitlers regime.

  • Right dude, your stupid ignorant uneducated and uncivilized, what else can I say? People like you better stay in their cellars. I'm actually quite happy shitheeds like you don't come here, thank you very much.

Talking to unwordly people like you makes me sad knowing we're living on the same planet.

    Du gratler du verschissner du

  • Arrogant, Haughty, Judgmental, and Accusatory not to mention Unkind and Uncivil. Alas! and YOU talk about EDUCATION!? Where ever you were educated, NO THANK YOU!

  • I was talking about Needler, not you. Chill dude, stop feeling abused/insulted. Thank you

  • Education like Class shows no matter who one is speaking to; both of which you show lack of.

  • You are too blind to see the ignorance and the generalization in your messages. I'm sorry for my abusive language but those people made me mad. Please stop spreading bullshit about a country you don't live in, there's enough uneducated people who believe what you say. Thank You

  • premiumBavaricum says "your stupid ignorant uneducated and uncivilized, what else can I say?" it is impossible to know of what you speak as you know not this person and now you look stupid! also to speak of cellars to say "People like you better stay in their cellars." who thinks of cellars when speaking to people? you make us look stupid and crazy more! only crazy perverts think people must live in cellars! quiet yourself you destroy every respect of germans left!

  • Just in case you don't know, cellar is figurative for keep living your life isolated from anything you don't already know. Now stop correcting me all the time you Eiertreter. You're THE embodiment of an Eastern German smartass and Weltverbesserer. Therefore fuck off, you're getting on my nerves. By the way your English sucks ass dude

  • i care NOT about my 'english' I am proud of who i am and function in world travel fine. also i rather my english be inferior than my english to be slang street talk 'sucks ass dude' and low class swearing as your gem 'fuck off'. it is YOU that says you are more educated than the americans, not on your best day, SIR!

  • U r 1 of the dumbest people on earth........I feel sorry for u cause u make no sense.Cause of people like u there will always be hate ....I don't know Hitler never met him but when it comes to people like u sorry to say I wish he was still alive to get rid of plague like u.

  • Und wenn der böse Sturm mich wild umsauset,

    Die Nacht entbrennet in des Blitzes Glut;

Hat's doch schon ärger in der Welt gebrauset,

Und was nicht bebte, war der Preußen Mut.

    Mag Fels und Eiche splittern,

    Ich werde nicht erzittern;

Es stürm' und krach', es blitze wild darein!

Ich bin ein Preuße, will ein Preuße sein!

  • of course thats what americans think!!they don't know anything about countries outside their own.i'm irish and i've been to berlin 3 times-planning my first trip to oktoberfest this september and must say the germans are probably the friendliest ppeople i've met on my travels

  • feargalk19- of course that is what some Europeans think of Americans! The fact that there are over 300MILLION people in USA from EVERY country in the world and many people in fact whole neighborhoods speak NO ENGLISH at all...how do you define 'an American'? I have to laugh at the ignorance about 'Americans'

Every American has a country of heritage that they may know much about. Ive lived in Germany and shared some surprise facts about life in USA with wonderful friends and family there.

  • Thank u ...I know cause I live in the USA and i see and hear what u said..........about they don't kow about any other country ........Americans are selfish self centered all the way ....they r fake and non compassionate.Lived here almost 20 years and still hate it .....if i wasn't so scared and worried about change I woulda left long time ago.All they care about here is themselves ! I wished i woulda never came to this country .There is nothing free No speech no nothing!

  • Rita,I dont know what America your talking about, but it does not sound like the one I live in. Von welchem einem Teil Deutschlands Sie sind?

  • alright so im supposed to go on a euro trip for skool and waz woundering.. is it a "pure white" thing only? all i ever see i nthe videos is blond hair blue eyes ppl... i dont want to get throw in a camp..

  • You're making a wise decision to study in Europe. And don't worry, of course you will not be discriminated against in Germany, or at the Oktoberfest. I think one of the most important pieces of advice to give someone who is planning a trip overseas is to be respectful of the people around you and their culture. If so, they will respect you. And hey, maybe a local will even buy you a beer and say, "Welcome to Germany!"

  • Put it you this way if you don't get along with Germans, Spaniards, Italians, Austrians, and the odd Turk or two best to stay away. For me it was a great. I don't what... is it a "pure white" thing only?...means. But if you have an adversion to Europeans, acordians, and beer again best stay away! Prost!!

  • I am very, very shocked. I'm feeling like what the hell are they teaching children in US classrooms? Germans (better we Bavarians :)aren't a people of xenophobic racists waiting for foreign pray we can discriminate. In fact we're one of the most cosmopolitan, humanitarian and hospitable nations of the World... and proud of it. Makes me sad to see that the aftermath of World War 2 is still seen in people's opinions of our country. Seems like US education policy desperately needs a reform.

  • I can tell you this, I have family in Köln and Bremen and they DO look down on the Portuguese living there. They resent the Turks there as well. Still today many feel superior to people from less affluent countries living there. They admit it! They also had no idea what it is like to live among millions of South Americans speaking Spanish dialects and Millions of African-Americans. My family would not want to. At least they are honest.

  • Do you even notice that you are contradicting yourself? You try to depict "feargalk19" as an ignorant because he said that americans know nothing about countries outside their own. Now YOUR view on Germany is nothing but utterly ignorant! YOU are the one generalizing here. Do you even know what you are talking about speaking of resentments towards people from other nations. ESPECIALLY conerning the Turks iving here, ESPECIALLY the youth you have to consider that you ALWAYS need two to party!

  • Are you too blind to see the ENDLESS amount of stupidity in nostermite's post? Do you try to defend him even? The reason that there's "OVER 300MILLION..." is that the USA have traditionally been an IMMIGRATION country, from the very beginning! "Some" white americans are not too happy living among millions of Spanish speaking immigrants either, does that make all americans racist? I could go on and on but I'm not willing to waste any more time on this. Your whole argument was a whole pile of shit

  • You try to give a more objective view on this, yet you have proven to be EXACTLY cliche american... you have no substantial knowledge about this topic, but try to act the smartass, depicting Germany as a place where most of the population feels resentments towards ethnic minorities. STOP spreading this pure and UTTER BULLSHIT, because victims of the american education system probably believe what you're saying. I hope the author of this will make a statement and help me unmasking your lies

  • I was not educated in the USA school system. We (my family) came to USA from our native country. My brother in law and step dad are Germans as well as many friends. I have spent time living in Germany and Italy. In fact I can tell you that many people also in Hannover look down on people in Bavaria as well. There is in Germany also a North/South discrepancy as to who has the best education and more money. People were actually making fun of a Bavarian dressed man at the subway station.

  • is known in berlin difference exist in germany with education, money also tradition. history explains well this difference. german people have big opinion and pride, the opinion they more remain quiet the pride it shows! see comments of PremiumBavaricum speaking to one he knows nothing of only attacking an american. some of the best private, charter, religious schools are in america only those do not join public polls or make news. also many elite colleges attended by people from all the world

  • Yes the North/South discrepancy is definitely there, we're making fun of northern twats as well, and I'm proudly Bavarian, you ain't telling me something I don't already know at least I live here. But what kind of argument is that? There's a North/South discrepancy in the US as well, but slightly but to another, harsher extent. @ Drambuie du you really think that the majority of pupils benefit from your "many elite colleges" and "private charter schools"? Ever heard of the education system

  • in black settlements and how bad it actually is? Blacks are still discriminated in the US, especially in the Southern States like Alabama, that's an undenyable fact. You two are trying to make racism and resentments a Germany only invention and that is simply not the case. I could give hundreds of examples here, but I'd rather say something to Drambuie : It was not my intention to harm or insult anybody here, but NOSTERMITE's post made me angry. BTW that's no reason to negatively rate my videos

  • You can NOT compare the Africian/American population that is now in USA as a result of slavery with all the nationality and heritage DIFFERENCES as well as the bitter wounds left over resulting so that the government provides programs, financial assistance and free education to them and the African/American left over resentment that accepts that and rejects the white population to the fact that GERMANS(not foreigners!)have prejudice in Germany with EACH OTHER. ALL are GERMANS in that prejudice.

  • One must never speak for the entire country. Also one must not speak of the entire country. We know there are feelings we do not speak in Germany but yes exist. It is true we do not like the less uneducated coming to Germany yet we like to vacation in their homelands. This I can tell you! Also at the moment at work again goes the Polish joking. We do not like to see us in this way but is true!

  • Great and informative video. i was considering going- After this posting, I am sure I will be.

  • Thank you for watching and commenting! Beer is one of life's nutritional staples, and the Oktoberfest is the mecca of beer. Live long, live large, live life. Go!

  • Thank you.

I grew up in Munich and did not know a number of things you had in your video.

    Vielen Dank and Prosit!

    Mike

  • Cheers to you, Mike. Oans, zwoa, g'suffa!

  • I went three times while I was studying in Ulm...I advise anyone to get there anyway possible, get yourself a pair of lederhosen and drink a mas

  • Great job! I'm scheduled to go this year. This video was just what I was looking for. See you there in 2008!

  • I'm glad I could be of some help. I'll be there the opening weekend at this year's Oktoberfest, per usual. By August I will announce exactly when and where I'll be either in writing on my YouTube homepage or I'll release an updated, 2008 Oktoberfest video. Cheers!

  • Very good video with a lot of good info on Oktoberfest!

    Prosit!

  • Thanks QDD! See ya there... Cheers!

  • Oktoberfest Zinzinnati takes place in Cincinnati, OH and is the Largest/Most Authentic Oktoberfest outside of Munich... The Bier Band is an INSTITUTION at Oktoberfest Zinzinnati...PROST!

  • U have to be 16 to drink beer in Germany and 18 for harder stuff like Vodka.

And if ur accompanied by ur parents u are allowed to drink beer if u are older than 14 years.

But be careful Oktoberfest beer is stronger than normal beer^^

And on the Oktoberfest u get no "Halbe" (0.5 litres) only "Maß" (1 litre).

  • how old do u have to be to get in and how much does it cost to get in ???

  • The drinking age in Europe is 18. The Oktoberfest is free to enter. The price of a one-liter beer (called a Maß, pronounced like moss) is around 8 euro, or $12. Have fun!

  • If your from Wisconsin this should your holy mecca,....do it before you die....

  • nice video. thanks for posting. I will go there one day during Oktoberfest,

next year though, i am going to munich in March. I dont know yet if i would have money to go to Neuschwanstein. I really hope i can. i will see.

  • THANKS for watching! Neuschwanstein is an easy day trip from Munich. First take the hourly train from Munich to the town of Füssen, two-hour trip. From out front of train station hop on bus 73 or 78 (departs hourly, 8-minute trip) to the castle. If traveling without a rail pass, buy the Bayern Ticket as I explained in your Salzburg (Part 2) question to cover transportation. Admission ticket for Neuschwanstein costs 9Euro, or (recommended) 17Euro for both castles. Have fun!

  • I am going to be in Munich for my honeymoon at the end of September 2008, anything that the video didn't cover that we should see???

  • Good choice of destinations. You'll love Munich! There are many things to see and do there. Within two hours of the city on the Romantic Road consider visiting King Ludwig's fairy-tale castle (Neuschwanstein) and also visit Salzburg, Austria. To get a handle on all the attractions it's best to buy a guidebook. A good book will easily pay for itself 10 times over both in savings of money and time. My updated 2008 edition, which has everything you need, will be released in Feb.

  • Thanks! Will Do!

  • Fantastic Guide mate, was wanting to go this year but wasent to be :(

    Hopefully next year!

  • Thanks mate, glad ya liked it! As a head's up, here are the dates for Oktoberfest 2008: Saturday Sept 20 thru Sunday Oct 5. Hope you can make it. Cheers.

  • ICH LIEBE DAS BIER

  • We were in the Augustiner tent Tuesday 09/25

    LOVED IT

    I miss the beer

  • Mmm, Augustiner, Munich's oldest brewery (since 1328) and arguably the city's finest Helles. Wise choice. Oans, zwoa, g'suffa!

  • It´s opened with 3 hits to the first barrel

  • 20,5 hours to go... I love my city!

  • Now less than two hours to go. I'm out the door in minutes; lederhosen on; camera in pocket; thirsty. Prost!

  • Yes, a very intoxicating festival! Oh, but how I have fond memories of Japanese beer: Kirin, Asahi, Sapporo. Mmm. Buy 'em straight out of the machines on the street. Gotta love it.

  • Looks like an exciting festival. I really enjoyed German beer when I visited there. Japanese beer is nice too, though.
