  • This has to be the sweetest song ever <3

  • I'll punch drunk YOUR love. <3

  • I'll punch drunk YOUR love. <3

  • OK, maybe not a great film but..Shelly Duval is Olive Oyl. Robin's wonderful and Harry Nilssons music is very very fun!!

  • Wendy, I'm home.

  • I used to love this movie when i was a kid! and this was my FAVORITE song. thanks for posting these :D

  • my mom told me this is the movie she saw when she was dating my dad. and they are still happily married . i think its adorable when my mom sings this when she thinks no one is listening. this song is just plain adorable! :D

  • Harry Nilsson is the best kept secret of all time

  • Popeye influenced PTA's Punchdrunk Love. In fact, on some weird level, Punchdrunk Love seems like a companion piece to Popeye when you watch the films back to back--call it a metaphorical sequel.

  • Wouldn't this be a great song for Bulma and Vegeta from Dragon Ball Z Kai?

  • made me cry all the time, a song from my childhood, after life hits you hard, and you experience love, heartbreak, now this song really kicks my ass

  • I honestly pity anyone who doesn't see the simple charm of Shelly Duvall. I really think she's fantastic.

  • So many people hate this film, but if they'd made it today it would probably have over flashy effects and pop cultural references. This film, with some bad stuff, had a lot of good stuff and managed to be more pure to the original than anything they'd make today.

  • @Tozzywozzy01 this film gets knocked around a lot and it's easy to see why, but there's still something oddly charming about it!

it's by no means a great film, but there was a lot of effort and respect for the original cartoons in mind when making it.

  • why won´t you share, you cunt!!!

  • Sounds so much better here than it did on the soundtrack.

  • 'if i was gonna be sweetpea's mudder, i should atleast let her be his fadder. or viscal visca. ugh, i ain't man enough to be a mudder' <3

flawless casting was the key to this movie's success, and flawless casting it was!

  • Perhaps one of the most endearing musical scenes in Hollywood history :)

  • I will marry any woman who sings this to me.

  • Was she singing about Popeye or the baby? Who needed her?

  • @hippypeace

    Popeye ;)

  • I fucking love Altman's Popeye.

  • i love popeye

  • shelley nails this song so perfectly, it's downright transcedent. who else could have given this song such warm frailty? an absolute gem.

    KEvron

  • she's the perfect Olive!!!!

  • Shelley Duvall IS Olive Oyl, thumbs up if you agree!

  • @CutandPrintFilms Well, yeah. That's what actors do in films.

  • The reviews were way off when this film was released. A visual masterpiece ahead of it's time. Rivals Babe or anything from Tim Burton. Normally a musical weaves in and out of it's storyline to spawn it's musical scenes, kind of like soliloquies, but the the townspeople closing their windows at 1:58 was a brilliant touch.

  • company flow jacked that loop "he needs me he needs me" for - Linda Tripp !!

  • BLu sampled this song in one of his beats.! :D

  • Shelley Duvall IS Olive Oil

  • This song reminds me the one played in the movie "Strangers" called The Sprout and the Bean"! But i love this song.

  • This movie is a childhood favorite. Shelley Duvall is so sexy!

  • ahh nothing like codependent love

  • beautiful

  • ADAM SANDLER USED THIS IN PUNCH DRUNK LOVE

  • @LowKey4453 Um, Paul T. Anderson (the director) used this in Punch Drunk Love. Adam did a fabulous job with his character, though.

  • But I do.....but he does! lol my favorite part

  • ONE OF MY FAV SONGS IN THE MOVIE...LUV IT LOL

  • there is nothing wrong with shelly at all. shes lovely.

  • I'm going to dance to this song at my wedding. Or at least somebody's wedding.

  • I hate Shelly Duvall shes really creepy.

  • j'aime Cette Olive

  • I love this sweet little song!

  • love this song

  • This is the cutest, most adorable song:)

  • thass mah gurl! i ain't even trippin. i ain't seen popeye but she's the best actress in the united states.

  • One of the sweetest, most charming musical numbers in all of cinema.

  • Gotta luv me sum Popeye!

  • I had this song's tone stuck in my head for the past two days, but couldn't remember the words to it to google it. Got it now, thanks!

  • @scrappmutt2 Me too, and today I was going nuts, thinking the words were "I love you I love you I love you"...dmaned if I couldn't find it on Google,ha !Then out of blue my son (he's 3) wanted to watch tv..I turned the tv on and here it was!

    Ironically enough :)

  • Classic.

  • shes so pretty i cant stand it when some people call her ugly and say she cant act. theres nothing wrong with her. shes a lovely woman and a amazing actress.

  • @frogdogcat22 Well, heres what I dont get ... You got all these people calling Olive Oyl "ugly", .. yet alot of women get anorexia or throw up in the toilet trying to look something like her !! Go figuer THAT out !

  • I love love love this - thank you!

  • I thot of this song when I first met the man that would become my husband. Because he needed me.

  • I don't think there's anyone in the world who could've played Pop-Eye but Robin Williams.

  • @benedictify i read this and i just pictured robert deniro as popeye and it would be so hilarius but robin williams did do a great a job and i thing ur right no one could do a better job

  • haha simdanes, have you ever seen "punch drunk love?" they use this song and adam sandler plays a somewhat charming whacko :)

  • I'm addicted to this song. Such an awesome performance!

  • Too underrated!! Just wait until they release this upcoming horrid 3-D schlep!!!

  • I use to sing this song when I was a teen to this boy I use to like back in the day.Man this movie bring back memories.

  • what the EXACT name of this movie

  • @dawarror "Popeye the Movie" starring Shelly Duvall and Robin Williams. A very HIGHLY underrated movie in my humble opinion. I highly recommend it, it has a very wonderful soundtrack and plenty of humor.

  • very underrated movie

  • Olive Oyl is so real.

So soothing to listen too compared to Wendy from The Shining. lol

  • i love this song!!!:)

  • This video deserves TEN stars. hahaha

  • Punch drunk love remember me

  • Why is embedding code blocked?????? LAME

  • @KarmaPolice55 I agree

  • The great Harry Nilsson wrote this song.

Also wrote "Lime in the Coconut." "Without You". "Lord must be in New York City." "Me and my Arrow." Wrote and sang the theme to "The Courtship of Eddie's Father." Sang "Everbody's talkin at me."

  • SO SWEET

  • I like how this song was included in Punch Drunk Love. I know PT Anderson is a big Altman fan. I'm assuming that's why...

  • I'm so happy I found this soundtrack on vinyl (minus, for some unfathomable reason, "Everything is Food"). All I need now is a record player.

  • i would agree ,this was a very good song from a less than memorable movie

  • Love this song, her singing style as Olive is perfect, it's not supposed to be over the top, remember she is ordinary and unique in Popeye's eyes.

  • So cute and charming...

  • this is an awesome song

  • embedding disabled by request...whhyyyyyyy? :'( *sobbing* :'(

  • Comment removed

  • this song reminds me of the song "The Sprout and The Bean" by Joanna Newsom

  • I thought the same thing. Same honesty and innocence or maybe something else? I love both.

  • was that an amish seaside community or something..?

  • Fishing village.

  • Aweosme! ^^

  • im shocked this movie didn't do good in the theater

  • Shelley Duvall singing Harry Nilsson...that is magic.

  • Shelly done a great job in this movie. Watching the old popeye shows.......she captured Olive Oil. Great casting!!!!

Can't say the same for the other rolls in the film....cough cough

  • "I ain't man enough t'be a mudder."

  • i miss shelly - so lovely and absurd

  • It's true. It's a cute song, but it really shines when it's in Punch Drunk Love in the long, absurdly romantic and very comedic love scene on Hawaii. It's up here on Youtube!

  • i know right i was looking for this

  • 1:26 melts my heart!!!

  • olive oil's song just popped into my head today...can't believe I actually found it on here...too cool

  • this movie was awesome. Watched it in the movies when I was a kid, was so excited :)

  • Lyrics by Harry Nilsson. Song by Van Dyke Parks. Shelley Duvall singing. And direction by Robert Altman. It just can't get better than this.

  • It actually does get better if you look at Paul Thomas Anderson's masterful use of the song in Punch-Drunk Love. god this is great!

  • Did Gawker send you here too?

  • this is a pretty awesome song except it sounds like the kind of song some psycho would sing to you as he's smothering you with a pillow.

  • lol

  • @simdanes LOL, now thats how I see it.

  • @simdanes i once got my prom date to sing this song to me. that was a strange night

  • this is cool omg

  • Her 'bad' voice is intentional! And I think it is totally adorable!

  • @nicolerowan I agree, and shelly duvall by nature is a good singer.

  • so truly and so fucking fantasy

  • Groovy. The telephoto shot at 2:22-2:27 is beautiful (especially on DVD)!

  • Ohhh, memories of movie days with Liza... :) *happy sigh*

  • Reminds me of "The Point." Harry rules. me and my arrow...

  • it's a harry nilsson song...there's one in almost all the paul thomas anderson movies

  • I love this song:)

  • Just watched Punch Drunk... wondered where the song came from and found this. Maybe I should rent Popeye. Not a bad song.

  • i used to listen to this part over and over and do a goofy dance haha i was a twisted child :)

  • i love this song its my favorite and stop givingher bad commetts love you you have a good voice

  • creepy as hell...I love it

  • sounds kinda like a song that got scratched on a record and KEEPS repeating, like Final Destination or something.

  • this song is also in Punk Drunk Love if I remember correct

  • Wow, I need a pair of shoes like that.

  • What ever happend to shelly?

  • the shinning

  • shes back in texas, seems like shes keeping a low profile. would be nice to see her again though;)

  • lol

  • cool,, thanks, i forgot all about this song,,

  • awesome! I forgot about this song till I saw punch-drunk love

  • This was a more audacious project than the Lord of The Rings. there was no pay-off in sight but Altman went for it anyway. A two-hour, dreary as hell, movie about Popeye. genius

  • can u put the entire movie on here please? i havent seen it in so long and i love it so much! it brings back so many memories from when i was a kid. thank you!

  • Elaine is me.....sorry for confusing you...my comment was a while back...

But I always come back to your wonderful video..."Maybe its because".......

  • Ahh, ok. Thanks a lot for your comment and I'm glad your enjoying my videos. I am a big fan of the Popeye movie and have tons of Popeye memorabilia which you can see at my site. This can be found on my profile page or the info box at the top of the page. It needs a bit of an update which I will probably start doing this weekend but I have a lot on there already.

    Enjoy!

  • Excuse me for asking, but who's Elaine?

  • awesome 'issy

  • Love it...

    Thanks Elaine (myrddin6) for sharing

  • Thank you Heidi! xo

  • Fantastic! ( Thanks for sharing myrddin6) I've never seen this movie; now I have to get it!! Shelley Duvall, one of the most underated actresses / stars of Hollywood's second Golden era..Thankyou for posting this fabulous vid! 'Scuse me while I press 'Replay'.. X

  • Fantastic share from Elaine.Glowing stars and hugs to you both..Jan and Susan.x

  • i love this song classic

  • heard this one on fashion tv

  • definitely one of my top 3 favorite songs xD

  • love it

  • aww i love thiss

    x

  • When I was young, I always thought this was a silly ass song, but now that I hear it, this entire scene was fantastic. This song was dreamy and enchanting, and if you could pull Olive Oyl out of a comic, you would get Shelly Duvall. They did a fabulous job to make her up for this role.

  • My favorite scene from this movie. Love it!

  • Those are two great actors doing a song written by a great songwriter. I just wish the movie itself hadn't been padded with all of those unnecessary fight scenes. They should have just beaten up the set and costume designers instead, because those costumes and sets do NOT go together!

  • This excellent movie closely follows a wonderful cartoon, and your inability to comprehend the magic is a sign only of your huge lack of imagination.

  • i like Robin Williams movies,my favorite one is gooooooooooooooooooooood morning Vietnam.

  • i am transfixed!! i'm in awe.

    thank you.

    michael

  • I love this song.

  • There is something to be said about being 'needed'! Sweet song! Thanks!

  • Ah. So THIS is from whence this comes. I recognize this immediately from "Punch Drunk Love" (one of my favorites).

Harry Nilsson is a genius. "Remember (Christmas)" :-)

  • P.S. Thanks, Benny, for the send. :-)

  • Oh for God's sake.....*hurling*

  • Wunderbar. Danke.

  • This was a great movie.

  • lol. Popeye is the koolest cartoon ever (besides Spongebob, Tom&Jerry, and Invader Zim)

  • Harry Nilsson is one of my favorite songwriters of all time. It's taken me years to get this song out of my head, but I just happened upon it here. Thanks a lot. No, seriously... thanks. :)

  • Thanks for sending this my way, Benny...now, it will be rattling around in my head for years...lol. Cute song!

    Karen

  • I have a problem. I've played this video no less than 100 times since I've watched the movie. Her voice... it's like some beacon of soft, welcoming lullabies that woo you into a subtle, soft coma of relaxation.

    Is it just me?

  • Excellent melody. It stands on it's own, without the movie.

  • Without question this is the best song from this movie. This song is very beautiful.

  • egad, Popeye! I recently saw Punch Drunk Love and *knew* I had heard this song before but couldn't place it.

  • PTA is just genius.. who would have thought this would be a good soundtrack to a modern day crazy weird love story

  • Remember that PTA is a huge Robert Altman fan. He even recommends that every screenwriter be familiar with Altman's Nashville.

  • But eventho this Robin Williams version of Popeye has become a sort of cult-classic, this movie is kind of an embarassment to Altman. I bet he regrets doing it.

  • Simple, yet sweet. Just the way a love song in a kids' musical movie should be.

P.S. Those are some weird- looking shoes Olive is wearing.

  • I remember the previews saying the shoes was size 14 AAAA

  • this film was made first, duh, so they took it from here and put it there, no big deal

  • 26,894...Chicks Rule!

  • Are you serious! this song is from popeye!

  • God Bless Harry Nilsson for writing this song!
