I like listening to Dr. West. He helps open my mind to new possibilities, new ideas, ideas that were always directly in front of me, but I could never articulate or visualize. I wish I could be in his company for just one day to learn a little of what he knows.
God damn, Finally a smart American, who's not into cracking jokes, or pushing for publicity and fame. This guy just talks the truth without holding back.
jsbarbee... he's black you goofball. of course he will rep. his people he wears his team color when he wakes up everyday. not that he can't take up the cause and rep. other people.. this is not inconsistent.

With such a preoccupation with racial issues, I have difficulty believing the sincerity of Dr. West. Though he presents himself as an activist for all peoples, his overemphasis on black culture and its welfare gives his words a hollow tone. He's just not believable.
i disagree. i think we should look at the context of his life. he put his feet on the pavement just to be able to see his community get the right to be treated like human beings. that shouldn't be ignored. even though nowadays the younger generations arent as divisive [hopefully] unfortunately the fact is race does matter. saying it doesn't undermines the legacy of the people who fought for freedom. he is noting that the african american experience can be a metaphor for all oppressed peoples.
If you've read any of his books you would understand that is not the case in that West considers himself apart of a human race, and is only after achieving not a "color blind" world, but a love struck society.
You may well be right. I've spoken prematurely and based my opinion on first impression. I'll do my homework and take a second look then. Thanks for your response!
Your an idot, he is Black, why would he not focus on the sufferring of Black ppl?
Your words are disengenuious. Do not fool yourself now that Obama is Pres. elect that poor ppl now are not sufferring, not jobless, uneducated, no health care and more and more becoming homeless.
Poor people and their plight ARE a real and serious issue. My point is that when Dr. West speaks almost exclusively of the plight of one group, it makes it difficult to believe that he speaks for all. Obama is not bringing relief to any one demographic of our society, nor should anyone place that burden on him. He aims to help all who need help. Finally, with you calling me an idiot, I'm not feeling that love you speak of sending out to everyone to make the world a better place.
I totally disagree. What has happened with Cornell, I believe, is that the root of his passion and pursuit for equality and truth came from the fact that he is Black and combining that with the continuing racial struggles it has remained the center of his thoughts but he has become universal in his philosophies. Very open minded.
Ok then what other major voice is there advocating the rights of different people? Dr. West is doing exactly what W.E.B. DuBois was doing before him. Using the African American experience as a barometer for the American condition.
Everyone speaks from their own cultural context but Blacks must shed their "color" in order to be taken seriously?
Who else is taking up these issues as effectively and consistently as West? What would be your alternative and what should be his approach?
He'd make a terrible president. Remember what he said in the first part of the interview? He's a prophetic Socrates, not a progressive governor. He speaks truth to power, he doesn't pursue power.
AshleyCake said: "He'd make a terrible president. He speaks truth to power, he doesn't pursue power.".....and what a refreshing change that would be in a president. He would indeed be a great president, but the voters would be too stupid to realize it , and he is apparently not corrupt enough to run? He would be a breath of fresh air if he was indeed our president. The ignorant voters, and the corporate-owned government, wouldn't let it happen.
I am always impressed by Cornel West's commentary. He is a brilliant speaker and I like the way he lays out his arguments. I would love to take his classes at Princeton.
