The "grind" is the most common whale in the world and there is estimated that the population is (these facts come from SS so I would not consider this as reliable facts) 49,000. I have heard, though, that there are about 200,000 pilot whales in all the oceans. Of these we only kill about 300 a year, a drop in the water. They aren't just taking a few whales out of the pod, but decimating an entire community... it's really disturbing to think that this is ok. As for the pigs, from an ethical standpoint it's no better than killing pigs, shouldn't do that either. However, pigs are FARMED, thus have sustainable numbers - raise a pig, kill it. Not so much with the whales, BIG difference.

If this is the case or similar, I think it's okay to kill an animal. I myself am from faroes islands, and its all true what PropagandaBuster says, well much of it anyways. The Faroe islands have always hunted theese whales we call "Grindahvalir" and since Poul Watson and his crew from the Sea Sheperd were aware that we did this, he talked about how brutal we were, and now people think of us as the brutal whale killers. But what about the many many pigs and cows that are brutally slaughterd every day. And theese whales we eat, come only maybe twice a year.

This fellow knows to get his points straight and to choose what is right and logic. The "grind" is the most common whale in the world and there is estimated that the population is (these facts come from SS so I would not consider this as reliable facts) 49,000. I have heard, though, that there are about 200,000 pilot whales in all the oceans. Of these we only kill about 300 a year, a drop in the water. I will now stop cause I can´t write more words down here....

They kill less than the whales reproduce and live in freedom until they die. Now tell me, why is this worse than killing thousands of pigs who has been in captivity for all their lives so we can eat bacon?

@DrCanyonero They slaughter entire pods of whales, how can that pod reproduce faster in the ocean? They aren't just taking a few whales out of the pod, but decimating an entire community... it's really disturbing to think that this is ok. As for the pigs, from an ethical standpoint it's no better than killing pigs, shouldn't do that either. However, pigs are FARMED, thus have sustainable numbers - raise a pig, kill it. Not so much with the whales, BIG difference.

@vitalscuba They slaughter about 0.1 - 0.2 % of the entire population and about 1 % of the ones around The Faroe Islands and they are not endangered. If this is the case or similar, I think it's okay to kill an animal. I just think we should be thankful that the good people in The Faroe Islands havn't gone commercial and selling the stuff building an industry. Imagine if they were Americans.. I myself am from faroes islands, and its all true what PropagandaBuster says, well much of it anyways. The Faroe islands have always hunted theese whales we call "Grindahvalir" and since Poul Watson and his crew from the Sea Sheperd were aware that we did this, he talked about how brutal we were, and now people think of us as the brutal whale killers. But what about the many many pigs and cows that are brutally slaughterd every day. And theese whales we eat, come only maybe twice a year.

Thank you for pointing out from your viewpoint how my questions infer a tone of judgement. I am basing my questions on evidence & history & that despite the suffering & the health & mercury warnings, it appears that the Faroe people will continue on. To base your arguments on fallacies designed to gain an advantage -like feelings of pity for Faroe people, misrepresenting other's viewpoint, making other's appear ridiculous and more, signifies a need for insight into normal human self-deception.

Why are people there anyway? Based on my research this remote harbor is a place for pirate-like people to hide out & live. The harbor never freeze making it easy to come & go in boats. Historically, pirates from Norway very well may be the Faroe ancestors. The problem is that animals from the sea & sheep on land seem to be what is considered food to eat there. The climate is not conducive to growing healthier foods that other climates produce..

Hmm, think of whaling what you like, but people threatening people because of it is crazy. I chose to settled in the Islands, and one day a threat on my life popped in as a comment on my blog. That says more about anti-whaling-people than anything else, but they can't have an incredible IQ to brag about. Besides - pilot whale is one of the most common species in the oceans, and has fed the children of the sea for 1000 years. Let it be that way.

That's crazy...if anyone was ever sent by the evil itself (I read the discussion here), it's those people spreading lies, hate and threats to other people. And I'll never understand these emotions about these whales - focus on Japan hunting endangered species.. but a small community like Faroes are easier to terrorize

@anholbek of course the firth turn red - it's big animals, and it takes a few minutes for all of them to be caught. On their webpage stood "they hack and whack them to death" - one more lie. It's one cut, and it's dead in 3 seconds. Not like the sick and antibiotic-fed calves and cows you're eating. Calves that were taken from their moms so humans can "produce" milk, and when they're too slow to produce milk you kill them - ya don't think that's cruel?
