I have always liked VW R32's, VW GTI's, BMW E46 M3's, etc. until now, but the mazdaspeed3 I just learned about. 6-speed manual (standard), turbocharged I4 that produces 263 HP, and decent looks/interior, ALL for 24k? BRAND NEW? I am sorry VW/BMW, but the Japanese have been really impressive in the past decade.

German cars used to be ultimate (1960's to 1990's - million mile Mercedes', awesome!)

But that is slowly going visa versa, Japanese cars are becoming more awesome for more cheaper.

I like the looks of the speed version but I wish it didnt come with the stupid turbo, I hate turbo lag, the turbo car probably feels slower than the 2.5 because of the lag. No replacement for displacement,. Atleast they have the 2.5 version.

Good conluding statement about the car. When it comes to the 'amount' of lag in cars less than 30K (US) I think you need to be a little more sympathetic in your 'quantifying' of it. OTHER than that. Awesome review! Very informative! Just my 2c worth :-)

i love my '11 speed3. torque steer isnt even that bad. i pull on wrxs all the time. people who complain its slow usually have a civic si and then get a nice view of my cars hatch :)

Honda Civics are, decent cars for the price. But Honestly, if I wanted something sporty, I would get the WRX, considering that Subaru has aftermarket parts for it now, that's a plus. And since most people don't live in California where there's abundant days without rain or snow...the AWD is worth the extra 2k.

the background music in the video a trash, I own this car bought it new. Its a great car especially for the cash. I didnt get the "tech" package it still comes with bluetooth and the stereo is very nice. About the same as my Wifes GTI with monsoon autobahn package.

Nice review, Gave it the bad and the good. Was not just negative like most reviews I have seen. My wife drives a 2011 MS3 and its a great and fun little car. For the money its probably one of the best turbo cars out there IMO. I say mazda for the win on this car.

The turbo is making 15psi at 2500RPM, At least on my 2011 MazdaSpeed3 it does. That's not real laggy.

@MrRioMario If I remember correctly, The Rx7 was way to expensive to brake down so often. I know two people who owned one that would agree. Had a friend actually force the dealer to buy it back. The Supra and Z were so expensive for Japanese sports cars that they actually didn't sell well. After those two cars, both manufactures got out of the sports car market for years until Ghosn revived the Z when Renault stepped in to save Nissan. I still don't think there's been a Toyota replacement.

Almost bought one of these, but I went with the regular 3s instead. Why? Because the Speed 3 only takes premium gas AND gets about 5 MPG less than the 3. Yes, yes, I KNOW you're trading that premium gas and mileage for power, but who does this really make sense for in our world of crippled economy and $3.00+ (regular) gas? I enjoyed my test drive of the Speed 3, but not enough to justify paying nearly .25 more per mile over the lifetime of the car. That's a LOT of money, Youtubers!

turbo lag is a real problem... when you are in semi traffic and find an opening to get out of there the turbo lag allows the next car on your side to close that opening. Now what? your stuck. so it's like having massive power which is limited because it's not immediate. This vehicle is a track beauty though, once your gone your just blasting away. But as a daily driver on the streets mixed in with traffic it's ..........

APR tuned GTI is well performing car than the mazdaspeed3, not even a torque steer...plus i hear alot of MazdaSpeed3's rods bending and breaking when tuned. that's a major yikes!

btw i like the gtr's evo's and sti's and am aware of the offroad/winter advantage but I LOVE two wheel drive cars, front and rear.

The biggest problem with this car is FWD. Also, hatchbacks are as cool as AIDS. AWD would have been great, even RWD would've solved the torque steer problem without adding weight, and given better distribution too.

@arthur84 making a compact car rwd wouldnt be practical because they would have to change the way the engine sits into the engine bay, it would also cut into the trunk space with the rear diff, and also the transmission would also cut into interior footwell space.

last time i checked the awd 274hp mazdaspeed6 was about right below 30 grand brand new. the new speed3 loaded is proably like 27 grand which is not too far away. they need to bring the awd back!!!!!!!

Only problem is the speed3 is faster than the speed6 BECAUSE IT ISNT AWD. AWD is much too heavy and would ruin its stance against the speed6. Manual is also cheaper as well, furthering Mazda's efforts to provide the Best car for the Least amount of money. In my opinion a job well done and they did the right things to give consumers that option.

Well, I think that this review was honest and right on... the whole thing with the torque steer- look, every review has something to say about it. I feel that in every day driving, you're not going to be dropping the clutch from stop to stop enough to complain about it. On the dragstrip, you may, but dont forget that when you punch it hard, every vehicle is going to react in some way. Ever ride a horse and kick it to get moving? Learn how to handle it, you'll be fine. This is my next vehicle!
